  1. Heres my first attempt at a guitar strap. It has the old association stamp pattern on it.
  2. Did you happen to order from their overstock hides? Alot of times, they will have the holes and scars. Normally, their first run hides are pretty nice. You should had called them about the hide you received, they try to make things right.
  3. Went ahead and listed on Ebay if anyone happens to be interested.
  4. I have 3 weaver master edgers for sale. Sizes 1, 2, and 3. Ive had these about 2 months. The #3 could use sharpening. $60 cash, check , or paypal . Shoot me an email at joe.j.jones@hotmail.com if interested. Seems Im unable to upload pics, so email me for some. Joe

    Stleather

When I first started leatherwork, I placed my first order with ST Leather because they were the absolute cheapest I found. The woman on the phone was to the point, but polite enough. The double shoulder I ordered from them smelled suspiciously like cat urine when it got wet, was tough to cut and stamp, and was pretty awful. Out of the 20 stamping tools I ordered 2 years ago, only 1 is not bent ( pretty sure Ive never used it ) . When I called to ask about a warranty on the tools, she told me not to hit so hard LOL . The buckles they sent were fine, the snaps they sent were hit and miss. Bottom line, you get what you pay for. Cheap leather is cheap, cheap tools are cheap. Not a terrible way to test the waters on a budget, but expect to get what you pay for.
  6. Pete, I named you direct on purpose. The rig you built me in the late 90s was one of the most comfortable and easy riding rigs I ever owned. Wish I had changed brands years sooner. Your gloves got used for 12 years and passed on to kids starting out when I used em them up. I refused to let them gimmick their gloves. Saved a bunch of hangups on the young guys starting out around here. Youre completely right about the new bodies and gimmicks killin off all the BB riders. Here in Arkansas, you go to amateur shows and might see 3 BB riders. In the 90s there would be 10-20 every perf. Even the pro shows around here pay mount money in the BB riding.
  7. Ive torn an old Barstow PR94 apart and tried to build a new one. Got in way over my head. Pretty sure a handle will require some type of dehumidifying press. Neil and Peter and those guys building them probably wont give up the secrets easy like ..... It ended up just being way easier to spend $500 on a new rig than build one.
  8. None of the pics I take seem to look like the same color as the saddle. Plus, I have no clue how to post one on here, even if I do get one that is close.
  9. Anyone know what dye is the best match to Tex Tans Sunset colored saddles and tack?
  10. Excellent! That will work for sure. Thank you very much.
  11. Ive noticed a lot of watch bands have the edges tucked under and sewn, You might try that route if your edges arent working well.
  12. Ive learned that good tools and good material greatly decreases the learning curve. Im sure there are people way more talented than me that can make the best out of the worst, I just dont happen to be one of them. Thought it might help others like me who are in the same boat wondering how to get the same result using the same methods described by some of the people who share them.
  13. Ive been working with leather for a couple of months now. Mostly I buy the #2 import hides to build knife sheaths, spur straps, belts and trinkets to sell to tourists. I had always marveled at the stamp impressions , dyeing, and edges that some of the members on here have been posting and wondered how in the world they accomplished it. Yesterday, I went over to a friends saddle shop and believe I have solved the mystery of how these guys accomplished such professional looking work. Quality Leather ..... He gave me some of his scrap W/C hides.... I immediately figured out where I have been going wrong and what was causing most of my problems. Amazing the difference. From now on, all of my custom projects will be made from nothing else.
  14. I stumbled across this link , looks like Kelly may be selling tools again.... http://www.kellymidasclassics.co.nz/
  15. Good idea, It sorta reminds me of a snow cone when I tried it tho LOL. Its going to be my last ditch effort if I dont find anything else. thanks!
  16. I have some orders from a guy who owns a Dairy Queen and he wants little ice cream cones stamped into some stuff Im building. Has anyone ever ran across any ice cream cone type stamps small enough for borders or such? How about fire/flame stamps? Another thought.... is anyone creative enough to create ice cream cone looking subsitutes using basic craftool type stamps? Ive thought about using a triangle beveler with maybe a plain flower center on top of it, but not real fond of the result..... Any ideas?
  17. No, Im wanting to find something to seal up spur straps, knife sheaths and the like . Thinking polish would be tough to work on stamped leather.
  18. What finish do most bootmakers use to keep the dye from running when boots get wet? Or for that matter, is there any finish that doesnt get slimy when it gets wet? Ive been using bagkote or neatlac on things lately, if they get a little wet, it just goes to slime.
  19. After spending the week trying to build a bull riding glove for the kid down the road, I totally understand why riding gloves are so expensive. The BB gloves I ordered back in the 90s were a bargain at $85. My hats off to Peter Hennessy and the guys who build the best.
  20. I had stopped ordering from Zack White Leather when I paid $15 for a couple of 1" buckles, some thread, and needles to get shipped to me. ( UPS dropped them off at my local post office for delivery, must not have wanted to drive to the house that day ) Didnt seem so high when I was ordering shoulder leather though . Maybe I will give them another try with the option for lesser shipper costs.
  21. I buy a few double shoulders from Springfiled Leather from time to time. Some are nice, some are not. Just depends on who has went in and picked through their pile that week. But the price is the best Ive found anywhere. St Louis Leather has good prices too, but its really hit and miss on the quality of leather they send you.
  22. I built this horizontal sheath after work Monday night.... this hand stitching is killin me, I gotta get a machine..... the border is a stamp I made from an old screwdriver that was years beyond being useful.
  23. They exist, roughstock spur straps normally have them on one end. Ive been looking for some for over a month with no luck at all. I finally ordered the cheapest utility roller buckles i could find and took the tongue off them. Seemed to work just fine.
  24. Thanks, the border is a stamp I made myself from an old screwdriver, was pretty proud of it.
  25. Anyone have any idea what the proper name of the welded loops with rollers on them are called? Or where to get them? Sort of like a roller buckle without the center post. Theyre used bull riding/ BB riding type spur straps alot.
