  1. Dirkin..... Awesome stuff man....You are a brave soul...I get afraid of attempting large projects and venturing into colors because i get so damned critical of the work i do and dont want to destroy any projects but you just gave me some more hope that sometimes venturing and trying a new avenue does not equate devastation necessarily...... your panel is flippin cool...I know one I wanna do as well but have not due to internal fear......I wanna do a VIC skull.....
  2. LUKE, Thank you for that...seriously, i think you are right and I am just gonna have bare down and git R DUN... I thought maybe there was an easier softer way for me the AMATEUR....however I am learning from true artists on here and I take what you all very deeply in regards to this as I am striving for the goal to be a leather worker! i will also grab that Al Stohlmans case making... i already bought the second one which does not have that information in it!!! So i am finding that all these books i buy are often the wrong ones!!! grrrrrrr. so my next set of questions i already posted are in regards to the lacing I love it is the double loop braided looking style.....will i need both sides of the leather to be flat against each other at the seam or can i put the molded front piece so it is 90 degree with the back piece that lays flat? YOU ALL are awesome possums Daniel
  3. I am just molding around original piece that i wrapped in plastic and the holding it for a few minutes......i heard about this whole jig type mold press......i guess i thought i could cut corners and not have to do it..... maybe i need to stop and just do it.....that way its done and resolved......if i do a jog mold it just seems like alot of work to get a press that will only be used 1 single time
  4. any other suggestions?....... 1 http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2786...p;id=1761919467 this is the corners i am talkin about.... 2 http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2786...p;id=1761919467 over all shot 3 better shot of the corner 4 problem/decision #2 (after i get first problem resolved) I figure (but dont know) I can lace this with the double loop stitch lace.....I know it can be done this way....... http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2786...p;id=1761919467 but i am wondering if i can do that stitch this way? http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2786...p;id=1761919467 If you all could give me input i would appreciate this asd i dont want to ruin this piece........gawd i dont know if i am over thinkingg or not!
  5. I am making a lap top envelope type of case for my notebook(tiny laptop). I am making it out of 2 pieces of leather. The front is the larger piece of leather (that is tooled) and it is molded to the shape and full depth of the lap top dimensions. The back piece of leather is smaller in size and will lay flat. i will lace (double loop lace i think its called) these 2 pieces together on 3 of the 4 sides (all but the open part where the lap top slides in and out of). Problem: when I molded the front piece over the computer the corners Protrude in one giant wrinkle (excessive in size) straight up. There are 2 corners like this. I would like to know my options in how to cut this corner so it does not look ugly or take away from my awesomeness of tooling (hehehehe). any input or advice is welcome and appreciated...i hope my trouble is straight forward. I would have posted pictures but i am at work right now.....
  6. my question would be ' will the dry spray paint chip when flexed movement is done?" then maybe applying some sort of sheen on top would help keep it in place? Maybe you could mix something with the spray paint so it wont flake in movement? ....but come to think of it I spray painted denim as a kid and it held up/.
  7. how about a pfaff? 120 dbl split needle. what is a split needle?
  8. They do help...However, I am very limited as to what I can buy in store here so I may have to travel in order to get one. I am so new I dont know differences in weights or sizes or gauges of thread even. I want to learn and I want a sewing machine and I will buy them as I have been starting to sell my work some. I will be getting some in a store soon even. Thus I am left with the desire and motivation to go further and buy a sewing machine. The guy at the store said that the sunstar is as much as you get in sewing machine to sew thickness.... Also he said you wont find another machine as quite. Also you dont have to push the wheel to get it started. Also buying new allows me to not have to deal with possible lemons....I can wait though and get other machine. what are normal thread sizes and needle gauges for holsters? Saddles? Fashion Belts (tooled)? I assume saddles mostly are not done on the table machines rather the long armed ones...correct? triple and/or double digit machines is in refernce to what?
  9. Has anyone heard of sunstar? model # KM-590BL I am looking at buying one to sew my leather.... Any insight or opinions? It is a table unit. It is absolutely quiet, fast stitches and real slow stitches.....I am new to all this letaher work in last few months but going to [purchase this unit possibly but would love your input!!!!
  10. I use 2-4 oz leather lately and have had no issue with it bouncing..... Here is what I do.....in my living room on a carpet floor..... I built a work table.....2x4 frame with 3/4 inch plywood...the legs are 4 x 4 treated posts. on top (directly over) the 4 x4 post leg I put my 12/5x17x 1" black polished granite....I put packing tape on the back of the leather to prevent stretching..... and then I pound my DEAD cow....... When i use stamping tools I hold it like a pencil and if it is letter stamp I hold it where the stamp clicks on to the handle and i hold it literally as tight as I can pressing downward.....I got a 20 oz rawhide hammer..... and I give it 1 single hard shot and every time i do i cringe that i am about to demolish what is left of my busted knuckles from younger years......Alls I can say is leather work as taught me that all the faces i hit was not worth it cuz now 1 hour of leather work and my hands sieze up (more info than you needed....but I am sure you will live!) hahaha anyways I am new to leather workin but from reading these threads repeatidly daily...probably obsessively.....I learn alot... PS Obsessed is a word use by "lazy" people to descibe the "dedicated"
