  1. I just finished coloring it today....so i will post those probably tonight too...my first time using colors really.....anyways your comments do help alot because these are things I never throught about I thought more background i use the more 3d i will get from it over all...boy was I wrong....quite the opposite hahahaha
  2. Sounds like someone is itching to be a martyr....can you say the "william wallace for pets" ps william wallace was allegedly hacked up and taken to every corner of scotland...
  3. ny helpers on this one? Remember guys I am brand new...pretty please....you do not even need to be nice just honest in ways I can improve...i know tehre is far distance to go.
  4. my question to you is how you get color difference in the petals of the flowers......the dark shading part can you pleas eexplain... BTW NICE JOB it is awesome
  5. ya i thought it was too much background!!! lol But hey go big or go home right? hahaha I will consider building a matting tool..... I probably wont get this pices much more flattened with that background tool...I tried different surfaces ...I used plastic cutting board on my work bench....I put 3/4 steel under cutting board ad tried wood under it as well....I also tried packing tape and cardboard but think I had the wrong idea cuz that was ridiculous!! lol I also taped the leather to my cutting board and at least that held it still long enough..... I did get to see how 1 tiny winy tool can do a whole big area fairly easily if you hammer like a rapid jackhammer and move tool around real fast...lol How about coloring background? I got water base eco flo stains and dies.... that may fix the texture somewhat?
  6. Hey all this is my third attempt at a carving...I will say the actual carving is not the best I have done so far....however it is the background I am more concerned about. I am looking for tips to improve my back grounding.....or any other tips you think may be useful....Other than "practice practice practice" lol (i know i need alot) http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu195/D...ft/DSC01902.jpg http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu195/D...ft/DSC01900.jpg Thank you Daniel
  7. Can some one show me samples of before and after burnishing pictures and explain it to me please!
  8. RIckMC I am in the same boat been on here and very reluctant to post my projects.....maybe after I finish the next one. I am not "artistic" and I cant draw wortha hoot.....maybe after my next project is done. I love these carvings you did....as my buddy told me people love homemade stuff...and a guy on youtibe called thechurchofdave said you can only put the value of your art at the price of the customer..... \ Great stuff!
  9. You are My FAVORITE artist I have ever come across...I fell in love with your video on YOUTUBE...You had responded to me on there....your awesome....
  10. I know its awful the way leather dont digest well....I have been bunged up for days now! wukka wukka
  11. Where was the "THIRST AID" when I used to drink!!! hahahahaha AWESOME
  12. WHAT THE HECK IS A PHOTOBOX?
  13. hello, A question to you all.... How do you, as individuals, avoid leaving bevel marks when bevelling? Also when you are tooling or beveling....do you hold the leather down with the heel of your hand or clamp the leather down?
  14. Are you the guy who does holsters on youtube?
  15. What types of toolable leather are there? is there a variety of veg tan types? or colors? I been ordering from tandy but they send me wrong thickness....the 3 and 8 are exact same....was the same thing when i went to the warehouse
  16. frank i am fairly ne wto this and have tandy starp cutter as well, the cheap one.....it works fine if i cut slowly.... Also, I make sure that the leather about to be fed into the blade stays snug against the handle and low.....this ensures that through the thick stuff I am cutting stays straight....does that make sense? when cutting straps make sure the leather being fed into the blade is in the same position throughout the entire strap...if it moves it will distort the straight edge i find
  17. hey, I read this and feel compelled to reply. I have been in a similar position. I felt broken, lost and fed up. I was told a few things... A) pray, what evr that means to you...just do it and ask for help repeatidly all day every day (i did this for about 2 years) live today only.....eat, sleep and breathe .....if your hungry eat, if your tired sleep, if your anxious or stressed focus on breathing C) if someone need helps ....HELP them, love them I am not a lovey dovey touchy feely kinda guy in fact I been a violent arse and hurt alot of people.....but these simple formulas like ABC and others I know have proven to change my life..... Another note.... my 3 kid sI love to death....temporarily I had to leave and love them from a distance and no matter how much I fought it and tried to stay in the situation it got worse and worse...which means i cant control it....so i backed off for a bit.....so months later...about 10 months things improved, my heart ached everyday but in time of doing ABC things improved and now my relationship with kids is the best ever.... I had to take care of myself in order to be the best DAD to them I could.....and now...my situation with their mom is way better than ever....in fact went from her hating me to having her BF ask me if i could take the kids while he proposed to her.....This is coming from a guy who has shot and stabbed people for smaller things....all in all man...I am trying to say that as long as you make right decisions, take an honest assesment of you, trust that their is something good for you and help others i cant see how life will not improve...do the next "right" thing GODSPEED
  18. Tom the way I have seen leather measured here is in what gauge or weight of leather.....3-5 ounce or 7-9 ounce etc etc. I not sure but think it is the ounce per square inch? maybe foot....? I not sure but that is how you pick it when buying it. But I see no diffrence in the weights I get from Tandy. a 3oz seems to be same as an 8 oz......so i am but confused.....
  19. I too am curious about what leather and gauge was used!
  20. I am new here but thought I would let you in on my big secret career....it is glorious so hold on to your petunias..... I work in the addictions field. I have been counselor last few years but am just starting as a medical detox worker in the hospital here.... I would much rather spend my time in the woods camping with my bow, my guns and leather work and soapstone carving though.....I have also wrote an unpublished novel that is near done being edited befor ei attempt to find some sort of professional editing or publishing....
  21. If I am not mistaken, veg tan is the only real toolable leather. I am wondering if there is anyone who knows where i can buy leather in Canada other than Tandy...I am in northern BC
  22. TOm: Has it only been bevelled around the image or has the whole background been pushed down then textured? Clay: With the surface for tooling io got a tandy type cutting board (oops i could have used one from walmart) I also use 3/4 inch of steal underneath that in order to use stiffness.....is that on right track? Or should I just use my work bench I made 1/2 inch plywood covered with those cheap plastic floor tiles.... Or just do what you said" A) put packing tape on back of my leather i am tooling (just one layer) rubber cement my leather to card board or put rubber cement like an 1/8 or 1/16 thick on the back of cardboard and use that for pading under tooling?
  23. I am new...but i like music on soft....tesla or monster magnet.....a coffee on the side table and sometime...maybe a person i am chatting too....and taking pictures of every project i do !
  24. I am new here and leatherwork.... I am playing with many tools I have, some i bought some I got given to me by an old client. I am playing with them trying to find good backgrounder textures.....can you give me some examples of out comes and what tools were used and a short description of how you did it....
