Flavour of the month (Notice the correct spelling used ) for me are the reruns of 'Allo 'Allo. To those who have never seen it, it's a must see. About the French Cafe owner who .............. No, I can't explain, you just have to see it. Here you are, I've found this..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO3_rXCYxLU -
Leather Slip-On Book Covers With Embossed Text

Very, Very nice. I particularly like the Colouring on the CA Logo, very professional, very elegant. -
http://www.lescuirsdebelfeuil.com/en-videos.html have a look at the bottom video, a sort of 'About Me'. I can't describe the quality of some of the work. I realise that not only have I a very long way to go, but that I'll never get there.

No, the circle thingy is by windfiredesigns.com and is excellent. Just the costs and processes of getting it from the States. -

Now that is really funny. Fancy normal British people trying to play it down for the American market....... No, we don't have it over here - I wish they would! -
Er, Cheryl, just had a look at your Etsy shop. I think I should shut up and go and get making some stuff. Impressed, and I'm not easily....

No, please do! It's nice to know that you are not the only one being persecuted. In UK we have had a rash of new starts doing 'courier' (parcel) services and most are excellent. Best yet for me was an Amazon order at 8pm delivered at 7am next morning. That was from about 500 miles away! Now i'm old enough to remember when anyone went to University (College to you) they sent their stuff by British Railways Parcels in a Trunk. I heard of one Trunk that was delivered one month after the person had got their degree three years later!

I was thinking of starting a thread here in Conversation that would consist of Jokes, Satire, Sarcasm, Irony, and general all round sophisticated punnery and witticism. Then I thought what is the point as the majority of the readers of this board would fail to grasp what we Brits were on about............. Comment from the Colonies? Ex or otherwise?

Oh!! Now that makes you shiver...... (Keep this quiet, but if the custom slip CN22 reads less than a certain amount, no charge. Thanky You to Goodsjapan who charge, and certify, that their goods are virtually worthless and attract no customs and no VAT, but their the post element of their 'free' postage prices are astronomical. <smug> $60? Ouch.....

Hi TXAG, I've had a calm look now, it is a Windfire Designs small circle tool. THe website is windfiredesigns.com Now this is a lovely bit of kit, but in the end $70 worth? Shipped USPS Priority Mail, but still took best part of a month. For better or for worse, I am an Amazon Prime baby. If I order before 1700 hours and don't get it by 0930 the following morning I think I am hard done by and briefing solicitors before 1200. Better explain, 'briefing' is retaining or hiring and a solicitor is not, shall we say, a person of suspect morals = but a person of confirmed lack of morals i.e. an attorney I think you would know them as...........

AND BEFORE YOU START I'LL DOUBLE POST IF IT MAKES ME FEEL BETTER! I just got ripped off. I just got scammed. I ordered a Firewind or Freshwind Circle thingy from USA. Not cheap, but stuff from the States tends to be well made and well designed. The postage was not cheap either. So i get a card in the post saying my parcel is ready to be collected at the Post Office Sorting Office (not a post office, more the sorting centre) and don't forget ID such as credit or debit card and remember even though you need one of these as ID you can't pay using one it has to be cash. So I pick up my little package. I pay £3.20 VAT ($5 or $6 Sales Tax) and , wait for it, a £8 handling charge! ($15!) That is why next time I shall be asking for someone over there to get one for me and send it to me using the strict cost as the customs declaration so I don't get stuck allways. In this country, UK, there is a TV programme called Grumpy Old Men and one called Grumpy Old Women. After today I would walk either audition....... Whinge, Whinge.......

Where Can I Find The Equivalent Tool Or Product In The Uk
ClaireAshton replied to ClaireAshton's topic in Suppliers
I have found a really good resource for having blades sharpened professionally. I have just had 3 manual skiving machine blades totally reground, fully squared and rebevelled. About a couple of hours each honing them and now they are mega sharp. The bevels are now mirrors and performance in the machine is, wait for it, Awesome! (Sorry for using the A word) Why take them and pay to get them ground? Well, they came back perfectly square in all respects, only a large industrial grinding machine can do this. To back this up, I took Medi (off this board) 8" splitter blade at the same time (he had posted it down to me and I posted it back after). This blade was in a sorry state. A large chip missing, some corrosion and blunter than a blunt axe. Caame back fantastic, (would you agree Medi?) I did a bit of work on it prior to sending it back to Medi) THe place I went to is about 30 miles from me and they specialise in Paper Industry guillotines. I knew to go there as my father was a printer and his huge manual guillotine looked just like a splitter blade and can recall how well sharpened it was when it was sent away. As a matter of interest, how many people have splitter or skiver blades they need sharpening? (not just touching up, I mean a serious start again) As an afterthought, and as a little guide as to what I mean by sharp, I bought a Stanley plane blade to possibly replace one of my skiver blades if I had trouble sorting it out. When this arrived you could not bevel 6oz (2.4mm) veg tan with it unless you put the leather on the bench and pressed on. Now having given it the Claire treatment, 2 sides of and oil stone, diamond 'stone' ceramic 'stone' then through the cloths, 4K, 6K, 8K, 12K then 3 grades of rouges i can hold up a piece of veg tan and bevel it without any holding it firm in the air. I tried the nail test with one of the skiver blades and it nearly went through so I don't do that anymore. Only trouble now is my knives feel blunt. So it looks like many more hours of getting RSI to get them up to snuff. I once heard of putting blades under a pyramid to sharpen them....... If this works, where can I get one! -

......... and there was I thinkin' our cousins 'cross the pond knew everythin', whens obvious theyse knows nowt.... I coats my thread, reclaimed thread from worn out britches from the charity shop (thrift shop?), in WD40 (or PlusGas?) to keep the water outof the thread. I dus this in said charity shop sose I don't get it wet on't way home or in house as many slates missin'. After I stitches, if the wallet is for export to the States, I dips in suncream factor 30 which stops rottin' in the sun. If for UK, I doesn't bother. No sun here and, in certain parts, they never gets their wallet out for it to catch any light goin'. Just my 2p worth (2 cents) from the ol' country......... Claire

Replacement Blades For Skiving / Splitting Machines
ClaireAshton replied to ClaireAshton's topic in Leather Tools
Oh, Happy Days Are Here Again Been onto said 'local' grinding service, 1/ Yes, splitter blades no problem 2/ Yes, new skiver blades no problem 3/ Yes, whatever else you want is not a problem....... So nice to speak to someone who doesn't suck in their breath suddenly in that 'that's tricky (read expensive) ' kind of way. SO Medi, ballpark we are talking £15 ($25) plus Vat for your blade. Message me privately to see if we can come up with cheap solution, if I roll up there with 4 or 5 blades then that'll be cheapest. This is a good already...... Claire- 18 replies

Went to pick a tool last week that I bought on Ebay. Saw he had a pillar drill press, "Er, any chance you could drill out my arbor press ram?". Posted off with my specifications, after my grinding off 2 teeth at each end, to his address. Just arrived this morning - spent all day doing test pieces, snaps rivets stamps - all a doddle. Then for the real test. Solid copper rivets, the ones with the burrs. Press down on the washer. Chop off the surplus then give it some serious pressure. Rounded off in the rounder offer - perfect. I had a 11mm hole one end 70mm deep, the other end 13mm hole 70mm deep and a 16mm hole 35mm deep. Bless him, he made me a sleeve to fit the 16mm hole to bring it all down to 13mm. Half a dozen 4mm grub screws to hold in the tools. Brilliant. Claire

Replacement Blades For Skiving / Splitting Machines
ClaireAshton replied to ClaireAshton's topic in Leather Tools
Hi Medi First off, I used to live near Wigan many moons ago but came down here to try and civilise the locals - no success...... That blade is 100% in need of serious resharpening. If it was a small, thin blade then it could be done at home, but those splitter blades are heavy and if you ground out by hand then you are just setting yourself up for a poor job next time you try to hone it. If it is done professionally on a jig, then when you come to hone it you have a 'perfect' starting point. I'll make inquiries in the morning and if they can manage a splitter blade I'll let you know. Yes, my skivers are both manual, with a handle you turn to take the leather through. What I've just seen on the Axminster website (one in Warrington) is rolls of 'paper' with various grades on and they are self adhesive. Stick them to plate glass etc. and you have a perfect long 'stone'. Might get the middle grade to see how it goes. I do have some Micro Mesh abrasive sheets which go to 20,000 grit (yes that is right!) Now that does get an edge on, if you have gone up through the grades properly. I am definitely in a 'get my tools in order' mood.............. Claire- 18 replies

Replacement Blades For Skiving / Splitting Machines
ClaireAshton replied to ClaireAshton's topic in Leather Tools
Well, well! I thought I would do some research using my idea of print industry - and what pops up but... Kennedy Grinding Midlands (HQ): Unit 1, Shrewsbury Rd Craven Arms SY7 9QH Tel: 01588 672289 Fax: 01588 673504 Now that is about 30 miles from my home - out in the sticks where I am that is practically next door. So guess who I'm phoning first think monday? While I'm at it I'll ask about splitter blades, Medi. How bad is your blade? Do you have a photo of it ? I feel like we might be getting somewhere...... Oh, I'd better mention this firm seems to do all sorts of blades so what we have shouldn't faze them. Claire (Insert smiley coming up, feeling like progress....- 18 replies
