  1. Good afternoon Chancey , you could try casing your greasy leather with beer ? The alcohol in the beer will act as a wetting agent & while your tooling you can always drink the rest & as a plus the beer will nourish the leather
  2. Your right Trox , the machine is not threaded correctly ; The black tension screw is for the bobine winder & there are some other issues with the thread path .
  3. I would love to have a laser & a cutting machine with a vibrating knife. after all my , sewing machines now have modern motors with computer controllers . Have you seen the cost of a machine to cut out leather ? Or a laser engraver ? & the time that would needed to learn all those techniques for programming etc; etc ? & all that to cut 2 bags per week . The economics just don't come out right . There is a point where IT won't help a leatherworker . Maybe we can use some digital stuff to make us better hand tools ? ?
  4. The style is nice but 2 many rivets . I always tried to avoid using them preferring to sew by hand
  5. It's a good idea & I've made some in that way but to get all the teeth the right size & spacing will be a challenge ! Maybe U could find some one to cut the teeth with a laser & all U would have to do would be to sharpen them & re temper them . Don't forget U will have to have some with 3 teeth etc. etc. . Why don't U order your pricking irons from Vergez-Blancard ² save yourself a lot of hassle ?
  6. I'm trying to find the pics of my collection of knives made from high speed steel saw blades
  7. Hi brother , I put some pics on Picasa web albums I'll find the link ? ? ? The knife handle is called L'indisponsable & it's coming from VERGEZ-BLANCHARD but U can make your own handle your self ; Use your ingenuity
  8. I make my own knives using High speed steel hacksaw blades ( NOT BI METAL ) Grind off the teeth with an angle grinder ,shape the point & sharpen on one side . I have been using this type of knife for 25 odd years . You'll need a diamond sharpening stone as the steel is very hard & even if when sharpening with your belt sander you heat up the blade HSS does not loose it's temper (like we sometimes do ) . Make sure the blades you buy are not BI METAL ! Here's a video of me using such a knife . http://www.youtube.c...h?v=hoiidrC0Nqc Plese excuse the ugly gesture at the end of the video
  9. I wish all you nice guys who love tools could come to my atelier & see all the shit I have & all my machines Ur all welcome . Specially Luke & Trox
  10. Hello brother trox , I got all those tools just like yours & sometimes in double . Although I rarely use them anymore , just looking at them gives me an enormous pleasure ! If U want you can buy all my tools when I leave the mortal coil . Your friend Ralph
  11. Hello brother luke , Is Ray family ? If so U should visit him & then come over & stay at my place for a few days ? It looks like your stitching pony would catching the thread on the mechanism all the time quote name='Luke Hatley' timestamp='1345916806' post='261741'] here is a photo of a stiching horse that should hold some heavy leather. the photo came from Ray Hatley in the U K>
  12. U gotta adjust the tension on your sewing machine
  13. You can never have too many sewing machines Ralph . The 267 is the work horse of an atelier . Anybody should appreciate your machine . If U pay the shipping to Belgium I'll buy it !
  14. Go get some repositional spray glue 3M . Spray that on your metal ruler or your patterns ; When the ruler gets dirty clean off the old glue with solvent (acetone) .
  15. Good morning everybody , I agree with Yanni ! Three of my sewing machines have HO-HSING motors & I never had any trouble with them . & on the plus side is they all have needle positioning systems & although nobody talks much about that , I never would be anymore able to live without that feature ! Powerful without gear reduction pulleys . But be careful there are 3 or four different models . On the down side they are expensive ; There is a guy selling them , I think it's Gregg from Keystone ?
  16. Just to say hello & that I think about you .Hope your ok
