I also primarily use masters on chaps. -
Here is a pair of chaps recently completed for the 2009 National Little Britches Rodeo Queen Danielle Kemp. I built the chaps but the tooling on these was completed by Tad Knowles fro Elizabeth Co.

I do alot of big circles on thick leather, and have gotten along best by scribing my circle with a divider, and then it is easier for me to follow around my line with a swivel knife cutting around half way through, then I go back and finish my cut with a hooked blade trim knife. my 2 cents Dink

Belt for my daughter
Dink replied to rawhide1's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Rawhide1 how did you finish the edge with the backing and hairon? I have not found a good way to do this, so generally I end-up inlaying the hair. yours looks to have a finish to it. Dink -
Adler 367 is my favorite for chaps. but I must also agree that I really like my Artisan also and have experienced the exceptional customer service they provide

Welcome soon to colorado, I live about an hour north of pueblo west. Their is a speciality leater shop in colorado springs also called the trading post I think. My impression was it caters to to native american and some renassiance craft, but they do have hides and tools also. I will be in pueblo at the state fairgrounds at the end of July with a booth at the Ntional Little Britches Rodeo Finals. It would be good to meet. Dink

If you can find a sandvic kick press 40 dies and and 300 foot of rule for $1800, by all means I believe that is a much better deal for you than what I have to offer. good luck in your die making business Dink
-
Yes there are 31 shaping dies and 8 knife dies (probably not correct terms), it also comes with two steel rule barrel containers, and approximatley 150' of 1 1/4" rule and 150' of 3/4" rule. I can send pictures
-
If interested in making your own dies look at Sanvik rule bender add. I purchased this and am considering to re-sell it. I just have no spare time to take on and learn another craft. not looking for a profit just a return of investment
-
If anyone is interested I am considereing to re-sell the below listed item, I just have no time to learn to use it, I am not looking for profit just a return on my money. It is less about 12 feet of rule.

Sounds like a woman that I would not want to mess with, plus I would want her on my side at all time. This sounds like a woman I wold refer to as mam. Though I would be lying to you if I told these were made for a woman. Dink

Ben Thanks for your insight. Tough I do have cross shaped clicker dies these were actually hand cut, since they needed to be smaller than my cross die, that is why I went with the rounded ends it was easier to use a end punch than try to cut detailed ends by hand. For the belt lining you mentioned Is not really a lining I cut my belts double wide then fold them to meet in the center of the belt, then I add the othe colr strip of leather to cover the seem. You are right about finished edges and the rivets I used on the straps. to finish them and use a rivet cap would look better without a doubt. The only reason I do not do that is that these guys are frequently gettinig there chaps stepped on and leg straps either broke or tore off so I leave them in the most easily repairable shape and with bronc riders I rarley use saddle strings. (like the brown ititialed ones) sine they worry most about the leg stayng tight in the swells I always send them extra straps and conchos. You are sure correct to about the sweep in the crotch (the cross chaps), They wanted these chaps made a little big for some growing room, I initially thought if I squared this one i could set the buckle at a little more angle to pull the leg up and tighter while they were in the little to big range. But that did not work very well and I do not like it very much myself. It should have been redone but the customer was not worried and elected to take them as they were. Thanks for taking the time to look and comment, I think at times a person can get intent on the detail and totally miss the obvious. Your comments and helpful, correct and will be used. You can see some of my other chaps and projects at www.prorodeooriginals.com Dink

I make most of my patterns. I had one taken from a pair of my old chaps and have just continued to modify it through time. I could help you come up with one if you need.
