Leather finishes
JustWakinUp replied to abn's topic in Dyes, Antiques, Stains, Glues, Waxes, Finishes and Conditioners.
A note waterproofing. I used pecards on a small bracelet i made for my daughter (3yrs old <==That's her). After it dried over night and I wiped the piece off i put a little Leather Balm /w Atom Wax on it to get a good shine. That night she took a "BATH" with it on and much to my surprise within 15 minutes of being out of the bath the piece looked as good as it did when I was finisehd and showed no signs of being in submersed in water. I stand by the pecards, the Atom wax thing was just a test to see if I could get some good shine and it worked fairly well. -
I've noticed a difference between Zack Whites leather and Tandys leather. The tandy leather when tooling seems awfully soft but the zack whites leather seemed a tad stiff when tooling. So my question to you all is where do you like to purchase your tooling leather and for what reason?

Hey Masja, welcome to the forums. Cant wait to see more of your work.

I'm interested but wouldn't want anyone to get into trouble. I also think that screaming from the roof tops is a bad idea as well, sometimes things done in dark alleys aren't a bad idea.

I have a really good friend of mine that is willing to help me purchase a sewing machine. I've thought about the artisan because of price and the good things I hear about the machines durability. I always have buyers remorse and never know if i'm getting the right machine. So with that said, am I making a good decision? What are your thoughts?

WoW, Congrats Beez...From all the seats I've seen of yours the cover shot is deserving.

Completely at a loss at how in the world to use this tool. If you have this tool, please explain how you get the basketweave with this thing. Thanks in advance....**Note time of post and frustration levels**

Depends on the riding, if you will be doing alot of Interstate rides i would suggest something larger than a 750. If you plan on your normal cruising to be between 55 & 65 I would "HIGHLY recomend the Honda Shadow Aero 750. With your short inseam and this bike having the lowest seat height you will have zero problems flat footing at red lights. The bike gets a little buzzy above 65 but for overall looks its a great classic look. You can get into a used 2005 model for around $4800. It's a pretty nimble bike with plenty of control for first time riders. I recovered from a sever motorcycle accident back in the 90's and it took me until this year to buy a bike. I grabbed the 05 aero and love it's handling and ease and especially the reliability. Good luck and keep the rubber down and in between the lines ! Enjoy your new bike whichever bike you decide on.

Great looking seat, I always love the weave on the side. Any chance on a tutorial?

Hey guys, This doesn't really pertain to leather work but, as many pictures that we all take of our work I thought this would be something good for everyone. I built one earlier this week for less than $5 using the supplies in the tutorial. You can probably build it cheaper too. The images of my flip flops were done using this very same lightbox View Tutorial Here

Has anyone ever seen a Martini Glass leather stamp? If so can you point me in the right direction for purchase.

Yeah i didn't really finish the edges and really wish I would have. When you say dampen edges, you talking slightly with water or that tragacanth? -

I bought my rivets from zack white here is the Link oh and just a heads up, be sure you make the tong/thong portion long enough, i think my kids foot is going to be a tight fit. I used 5 rivets per flop and everyone seems to love the copper rivet look. Im finishing my younger daughters tonite with some different staining technique and will post those by this weekend. They will have nickel rivets. -

I'm planning on making myself a pair with Vibram Lug Soles. You could always use those contoured soles I'm sure it would work and be more comfy for her. -

Not sure about the rivet bothering the toes, my wife has the same concerns. This pair is for a 4 yr old so i'll have to get back to you once the R&D team gives them a good try out. -
It's been quite a week of learning for me. I'd like to thank everyone that has helped me along the way. I had some staining problems here and there. I have one more pair to do for my 3yr old and will apply the new staining techniques to those. These have copper rivets, the dye was mahogany extremely diluted, antiqued with british tan and finished with leather balm w/ atom wax. I used craftool foot stamps(471R,471L) as well as craftool butterfly stamp (z788) and are on 1/4inch crepe rubber. For now here are the flip flops I made for my 4 year old. *any critiques welcomed.
