  1. I've only completed two projects myself. Prolly not the best to give advise. So, I won't try to do so on the tooling. However, I have studied Chan Geers patterns and try to mimick his work.
  2. Hey folks! I just completed this picture frame mat.
  3. Thanks Troy! After sending this to the local frame shop I stumbled across a video on Tandy's leather craft library site. It shows how to make a leather backing. I like the framing though and the one I'm working on now will be framed as well. Be sure to share one of yours when you can. Happy tooling!
  4. This could be a stand alone frame if a backing was put on. I wound up using this the same way a mat would be used in a standard frame.
  5. Thanks t! I like the transparency sheet idea. I wound up getting this framed and now have glass behind the leather.
  6. Thanks Colt and Jimbob!
  7. got the sheridan carving bug and it's awesome!

  8. Thanks for the compliments and Grey, thank you for the detailed information about framing.
  9. Hello everyone. Been a while since I've posted and I thought I'd share my first Sheridan styled project. I just completed this Sheridan style picture frame for my wife. The pattern is by Chan Geer.Looking at framing options if anyone has done any of these before.
  10. Here's one I did not too long ago. The pattern is from Maker's Leather Supply.
  11. Agghhh.....work computer is blocking me. In Afghanistan, can someone elaborate or copy n paste on the original post link for me?
  12. It cracked around my right hip area. A good distance away from the buckle fold over. I oiled it as well after dye. Maybe I didn't use enough oil to get all the fibers softened?
  13. Hello everyone. It's been a while since I've been active on the board. However, I do have a question that I hope I can get some guidance on. I recently downloaded "An Insider's Guide to Leathercrafting" from Weaver's. In here it states "The fibers of the bend are thicker and more prone to cracking, so it is beneficial to temper this piece of leather in warm water before bending." That triggered my memory to a belt I made last year that had some cracking on the top layer when I used some Hermann Oak single bend. Is there anyone that has a process they are willing to share? I typically don't do any carving, if anything I may stamp a belt on occasion. However, the belt that cracked on me was just dyed, oiled and finished.
  14. Thanks. Got the buckles at buckleguy.com
  15. Please forgive me for any delayed responses. I'm currently on the other side of the world kicking sand. Red Cent, thank you for the compliment. I dampen the area to be punched then I smack my oval punch with a dead blow hammer. Toolster, thanks for the compliment. I use a Cobra class 4 with 207 top n bottom. On one of the previous pages I have a photo of the needles used if you need that. Ran, thanks for the compliment. Mccottie, thanks for the compliment and info on the needles. I was experimenting with my burnishing at the time. The old tried and true method I use is Bob Park's method. I had just received a wood burnisher for my drill press and I probably used that some too. I prefer Bob Parks method, but is more time consuming. Trevor, thanks for the compliment. I do use a light box. For the life of me I can't remember the brand though. But its one that's made of vinyl and collapses into a nice little round carry bad. I also have side lamps and an over head lamp. I use a Canon G 12 camera on a tripod. If I was home I'd be able to give you more info.
  16. That looks great! Thank you very much for the response.
  17. Just purchased the Tandy Expedition briefcase. I plan to use this as a template as I do not like the circular holes Tandy punches in their kits. With that being said, are these type briefcases easily sewn with a machine? I have a Cobra Class 4 but I've primarily used it for belts and holsters. Anyone sewing up cases with their class 4 machines or hand stitching? If hand stitching is most recommended, I was thinking about using the stitching prongs?
  18. Thanks Tim and Eaglestroker! Tim, I wanna say I got the thread from eBay seller "jimtalyinc".
  19. Concur with Tandy having its purpose. When I lived in San Diego the Tandy shop was 30 minutes away. I bought most of my supplies and tools from them and I have no complaints about them. They were convenient. On the other hand when I started using HO I always had to order it. It is very nice for a beginner to walk in not knowing what he/she needs and be able to see a product and ask questions. For that I think they do a real good job.
