Hello Dennis, first I'd like to say that I love the eco flo dye. That being said, I can't stand the coal black! I have never in 6 years been able to make it work evenly, every other color works great for me. So for black I use febings usmc black. The eco flo is just like water colors from grade skool, it bleeds and runs and if your not carefull can make a HUGE mess. I knocked a 4oz bottle over on white carpet once and my wife almost killed me. So the best advice I can think of is this, pore a small bit at a time into a smaller container and practice practice practice on scrap leather. It took me forever to get something I liked, and some people get it the first time. Just have patiencs and good luck. And we all always love to see pics when you get finnished. This is a shotgun butt cover I just made eith eco and usmc.

A lot of people have been posting about mixing 50/50 resolene and water, I have always just used it rite from the bottle. So I was wondering why people are mixing? Becides doubling the resolene does it actualy preform better? Thanks in advance for the input.

I Have No Way To Work. Tooling Is Too Loud.
PutnamLeather replied to Blakebcg's topic in How Do I Do That?
I found a marble slab 5ft by 3ft for free from a place that replaces old countertops. Somebody broke it and the said they couldn't use it. Plus the desk I have now was free off ksl.com in the free section. Its a 1950s oak desk that had quite a bit of damage to the top but I fugured it was going to be covered anyhow. If you can wate long enough, and don't mind some dumpster diving, a lot of stuff can be found for free. -

Throwing Knife And Sheath.

Na, they put 6ft of paracors around a 1oz leather wrap so the weight is about the same.plus I was turned on to spear style throwing by Ralph Thorn so even if the balance was off a bit it would be ok. And the way I figure it is if it gets messed up I'll just be able to do it again. -
I was having the same problem for a while with the trag, soon as I swiched to saddle soap everything started working out a lolt better

Hardened Leather Armor And Tooling
PutnamLeather replied to KingDominoQ's topic in How Do I Do That?
Hello, All I can say is that I've been looking around for a while now and haven't found anything usefull. There's some articles about boiling the leather but never mention the exact process. I know it can be done somehow because I've seen it, but whoever knows how I guess isn't talking. -
I have the same tool and just sanded the sides down with a dremmel sanding wheel or whatever its called. You have to be carefull not to go to fast though.

Hello James, I was having the same problem for years until I found this site. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/home/infoandservices/Leathercraft-Videos/Leathercraft-Videos.aspx Just click on the line 24 link and you'll see how it should be done. Good luck.

Hey everybody. You said you have been using oil on your gear? Along with what every one else said oil and water arnt friends so the oil will have to be applied after the eco flow has dried and been buffed. Also the eco flow will dye more evenly if the leather is slightly damp when it's applied, not really damp but more like almost dry after casing and tooling. Then after it's mosley dry from dying buff with a damp clean soft cloth, then let dry for 4 to 8 hours, then use the oil. At least thats how I've learned to do it, mostly through trial and error.

Thanx for doing that, it'll save me from guessing all the time.

Hey everybody, theres a lot of tuts about making a strop for swivel knives but I can't seam to find one for a straight razor. The design looks pretty straight forward, just a 3 in strip of leather and some D rings, so the advice I really need is... What type of leather should I use, and do I need to dress it with anything before it can be used. Thanx in advance for any input.

Hello Dennisk, Firstly it's criticality important that you remember that in order to buckstich you need to have an even number of holes. I can't remember how many projects I've completely ruined by miscounting. That said, the how to lace book by Stohlman says to make a cut in the end of the lace as long as the lace is wide, come up from the flesh side through the first hole, down through the second and then through the cut in the lace pull tight then continue. When you come down through the last hole just tuck the end of the lace under the last loop on the flesh side and pull tight. And there you have it. Gavin

Swivel Knife Inplace Of A Stitching Groover
PutnamLeather replied to SooperJake's topic in How Do I Do That?
Bruce is right, in Hand Stiching by Stohlman it's called a hidden stitch just for that reason. It's also used on the soles of shoes so you won't walk the thread bare. But you could try beveling both sides of the cut before stiching to keep it open. -
Ear plugs.

I have been doing what Chief said for a while now and it seams to work really well for thread and buckstich.

I've found that no matter what you use to slick with taking a few minutes to sand the edges properly goes a long way.

How Do I Know What To Charge For A Custom Job
PutnamLeather replied to Stitching Pony's topic in How Do I Do That?
Hello, When I first started with leather I was told to charge 3x the cost of materials or $30 an hour for more complicated projects. Hope this helps. Gavin -
No offense taken, I've just assumed things before and have been wrong about it so now I ask just in case. Plus theres a lot of people who, for whatever reason, want a period flag or a rebel flag. I haven't made a flag yet but I've worked on a few projects that used multiple colored dyes. I don't know how to add links, but all my stuff is on facebook.com/putnamleather
