Ok Now I Am Confused! Veg Tan Or Chromium Or Something Else?
chancey77 replied to chancey77's topic in All About Leather
Thanks Bill!! Ya ok I just got off the phone with the tannery. They said they have several different oil and veg tan types some with much less oil content percentage and told me they do have what I need. I am so happy to buy a skin for 130€ that locally I would be charged 400€ for. Tandy would be 250€. I was just a bit shocked when I took out the samples:) But they are sending me new samples of what I am looking for. Very helpful and fast on shipping! I got the sample in 2 days. The leather they sent with more oil content took dye very well and tooled wonderfully it just took a lot more water to case than the other stuff I have been using. And the biggest difference was the Kip. But it seems all sorted now!!! Thanks again Bill!!! Chancey -
For as long as I can remember I have been using Veg Tan or at least what I thought was Veg Tan.I just received the samples direct from the Tannery I found that specializes in Veg Tan only...But It is VERY OILY front and BACK; and it doesn't take water nearly as well. obviously because of the oils used to tan the hide.It seems to take water I guess ok and dye, but the leather I have been so used to feels like velvet on the back and is much lighter in color and takes the water instantly.AM I MISSING SOMETHING???Very confused right now:)Does anybody know what is up with this? What should I be looking for? The one I have been using is on top in the pictures and the other 2 are the samples. Is it just dry, or is it something else entirely?I could see that the quality is MUCH better, in teh new samples, they also seem much stiffer.....HHHHMMMMM??!?!?!?!?

It is fine! Just put them on! Everyone who owns a guitar approaches it in different ways...they baby the guitar and turn their belt to the side so they don't get buckle rash...or they like the abuse the guitar gets from being used...like myself! I don't care about buckle rash of dings or dents it is just part of the life of the guitar, and like my hammer it is just a tool, not a collectors item to look at on the wall, but an instrument that is meant to be abused and played! Usually the strap is taken off and put in the case or folded on the backside of the guitar while still attached in a soft gig bag... SO CONCHO IT UP! If the client wants it then give them what they want...that is MY RULE!

OK SOMEONE GIVE THE GOOD OLE BOY SOME REAL ANSWERS! 1st is the mounting bolts on the Pan? I see the bolts for the swing arm but not the springs! So get those wielded in first and clean up those sloppy wields. after that;; Foam: get some black closed cell foam or even the kind of foam used in gym matts, but it needs to be a closed cell no matter what. Home Depot should have some 1/2"-1" closed cell for wrapping pipes with normally sold in 4x8 sheets. 1. Spray glue or Contact Glue on the foam and leave it bigger than the pan at first after it is glued on take an old sharp knife and cut off the extra foam. Get yourself a sanding drum paddle thing that goes on a drill and round off the edges and shape the foam. like in this link.... http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=39248 2.Make your leather pattern 1cm larger than the pan after the foam is on. Do this for the bottom as well, but I tend to leave the bottom ruff cut much bigger until it is dyed/stained/oiled and ready to glue on. 3. Do your tooling or whatever you want on the top piece, then contact cement the top on and the bottom and then use a pair of shears or heavy scissors to cut the bottom to the shape of the top pattern.... Punch holes for lace or sew it together however he wants it..... If you really don't want to do it...JUST MAIL IT TO ME:) I'll do the job for ya;) Any more questions? It is easy as falling off the bar stool! A saddle guy like you should have no problem I know but working out of your element even for me can be stressful and I think it is better to ask than to not ask! I hope this helps a bit! Good Luck!!!!! Or MAIL IT TO ME:) -

The Next Victim! Vintage Tele Wrap And Tool!
chancey77 replied to chancey77's topic in Musical Instruments
Finally yesterday we got some real shots of the Stage Coach Robbery Tele for the web site done! Also I managed to finally get around to making the strap for this tele as well! So here is its premiere! -
Ya Walnut is a glorious piece of wood for a tele! But I am only using it for its tone. The guitar will be entirely wrapped in leather. I have gotten so many comments about people thinking that leather guitars only ever have a western theme even though my last one is NITHING LIKE ANY ITHER TELE EVER MADE but ya it was still Wild West themed; so for these we are going far outside the box on that so I can continue to smash the traditional boundaries. I think everyone will be surprised:) I have about 50 ideas so I am narrowing it down to so what is next:)

World Class Motorcycle Engraving mad scientist CJ Allan and I are going to Tag Team these new Telecaster and Cabronita project Guitars! Together with Scott Morgan from Morgan Guitars we are going to embark on an epic journey over the next month to create 2 of the sickest guitars ever to be played!!! I spoke with CJ Today and he is all ready to rock on these! he will be doing the engraving work on the neck plates and control plates and a possible Bridge plate for the standard Tele!!! I am so F'N stoked right now I can't wait to dig into these!!!! I have some sicko ideas about the artwork I don't want to give it all away.... You have to stay tuned and check out the updates as the sickness starts to become a real living playable piece of history! Scott is bringing back some vintage tele parts from the USA an cannot hardly keep himself seated and to tell ya the truth I can hardly sleep at night dreaming of how this is all going to turn out.... Just counting the days until they get plugged in and amps TURNED ON NUCLEAR! Stay tuned!!!! Check out CJ Allan and his Amazing art! http://cjs-engraving.com/

Ok well... Basically get a rubber glove on, put on a sock over your hand, tip the jar to get light amounts of dye that you can control, and start giving the leather a LIGHT rub with your hand flat and ridged. It will start to skip over the areas that you have tooled / used the knife and beveler on. It will get in there a little, but it is like a natural fade. So it pops! I call it Negative Antique. It colors everything EXCEPT the cut lines. Hence my term NEGATIVE ANTIQUE.

I know raight! hahahaha Hey i used the M885 around the border for the light and texture...it is all about my sock treatment while dying so it skips over the areas that are depressed, backgrounded and cut/beveled.
