Hermann Oak has russet, old world harness, drum dried harness, drum dried skirting, regular vegtan, holster leather. What are the differences? What step makes harness leather longer and does it affect its ability to be split down?

If you never used tiger thread before or braided thread try out a spool or sample before you buy 200 dollars worth of goods. For me personally I don't prefer it as it looks clunky (.8mm at 7SPI). .6mm would look better, linen is what I prefer after trying out ritza and Tiger. I can see why people like the thread though. I have some samples available in black and brown from my own personal usage that I sell on my etsy.

Selling Items That Are Copy Righted - What Is Fair Use?

Okay il contact an ip consultant if it won't cost anything and make sure I'm protected. -
Im making a pair of shoes myself, nothing this hard though. Some tips from you will be nice, as you have more knowledge than I do. For the white poly liner how did you get the pattern, Im a bit confused. Quote:There no corrections for polyurethane foam, but lining must be recalculated - 1mm suede + 3mm polyurethane foam + 3mm wool interlayer + 4mm lining allowance = minimum 11mm total must be added to the upper contour, on which will be sewn lining. This is necessary to ensure that all will twist neat. How did you get the recalculation of 11mm extra. Is that the thickness of all all the leathers and the poly has to compensate? The sewing to get that turned edge how do you achieve that. I managed to get it done, not knowing the basics or how it is suppose to be done correctly and the results were okay. Sar 446 and 306 are these loctite brand or a industrial standard glue? Most impressive project on leatherworker I have to say.

Selling Items That Are Copy Righted - What Is Fair Use?

Just wondering if anyone sells things on etsy or whatnot w/ screen printing on their pieces or tooling of characters (which I have seen a few). Don't have any lawyer contacts right now (out of my budget). Id probably want some pay if I was a photographer for sure, if I was the owner of Mario I wouldn't mind unless it hurts my brand. Probably would get sued by nintendo if I did a large line of Mario products without licensing. A small line of handmade or inspired by mario goods is a grey area. My gut says it won't be their radar, they do have the right to sue though. Anyone dealt with this specifically -
Im pondering the potential idea of screen printing images onto leather and selling various products that have copy righted images or images of celebrities. If I was to print a bob marley image onto a wallet or a famous quote will that fly? The rules seem to be very loose with what can be used when selling items. There are many shirts of bob marley on the front, many of the small one man companies most likely didn't get a licensing agreement. Can you be sued for this? Some say that its okay to use copy righted material as long as its a custom order and not pre produced. Has anyone sold any items leather related or not that have popular imagery?

Anyone know the difference between latigo and bridle? Both are impregnated w/ oils, what are the differences in the manufacturing process? Bridle leather is known to be the best grade or name of leather, is it better harvested hides?

okay il look into a press. The hammering takes too long anyways.

How do you get the black for the background appear so seamless? Is that also createx? The way I imagine it is you paint the whole thing black and then paint the colours for the portrait. It looks like bridle leather from the pictures but its either dye or acrylic I can't tell. -

Is that angelus acrylic paint? Been trying to get a finish like that. -
Looks good. Any tips to get the front and back pocket to be parallel with each other, meaning the top of the front pocket edge being 1 cm below the top of the back pocket and keeping it exactly 1 cm apart. Sometimes mine come out 2 mm too high on one side and by eye its hardly noticeable until you stick a card in. Do you use a template or eyeball it?

fair enough. some people don't mind buying a piece and finding out if its good or bad. I prefer to know what I'm getting before I buy especially for leather.
-
well.. thats alright. But how come they can give away samples with a purchase free but if I am showing interest on a future purchase I have to pay... maybe even 15-30 dollars for 2 separate sample shipments. Kinda a cheap shot. I have to purchase something and hope its good quality and then I get a sample.

In my opinion any company that charges 15 dollars for small samples I wouldn't want to deal with. Another company sends 15 samples of different colours express to my hours 2 days after I request a sample and all are professionally cut w/ packaging. Only issue is they don't deal in small quantities.

My dies I don't use a press for and hammer them in hard on vegtan. Should I buy a press for these dies or can they take the pressure of the hammering. Im using a professionally cutting board from springfieldleather. It looks like its cut out of a larger material and not branded. It does work well. Unsure if it is the same as other cutting boards. - The die can It take hard hits from the hammer and not dull the cutting edge faster than a press?- It takes 20 hits to get a whole piece out. It looks like it will dull after a hundred from the hammering and a thousand for a press. Am I correct to assume this or does the edge hold up if the cutting board has a piece of cardboard or foam beneath the cutting edge.

Is it called square D or does it go by any other name. Square up is the only one I found and the card has to be swiped. Can you send me a link I'm interested if it can be used like paypal with a lower rate. Conversion rates are skewed on their site. -
If that is saddle stitched you have a very steady hand. Looks nice. How did you get the inside vegtan to sit so flush on the edges? I also want to learn how to burnish the edges. A quick rub on the wood burnishing stick did nothing for me. A cheap soldering iron from home depot and a tip attachment for a few dollars on ebay can act the same as the expensive iron.

I buy a sample before I buy the whole hide usually. It was from Springfield leather. From talking to them I found if you order a horween sample and think it is good then the actually whole hide they send you will be better. They usually send out the lower grade leathers for the samples so that the better selections are for the whole sides. Email the horween representative and they respond within 5 hours with the price list. Fee is 30 dollars for handling regardless of order and price is only justifiable for shipment of 5+ hides. Under 5 hides Springfield leather has a better deal. The thicker the leather the more you will have to pull to secure the stitch which in turn will give you a shorter stitch than one made with thinner leather. For reference the two pictures of the shoe and black leather were made with the same 7spi stitching iron. If the leather is stretchy it can cause the spaces between the pricking iron impressions to expand (like how a overstitch wheel impression looks like). More noticeable on leathers like upholstery. It can probably be flattened. With the small amount of time i've used upholstery (aniline tanned) the stitches look very nice front and back. It does look different than veg tan. Less spaced out. Leather has more give to it, just enough strength to not distort like cheaper chrome tan.

I've used essex from horween and it is just stiff enough to stitch. My rule of thumb I go with now is the area has to be glued all around the area of stitching, the leather has to be 3mm or thicker(total of all the pieces) and preferably stiff. Upholstery leather with a softer touch can work and so can horween, just not stretchy chrome tanned. After a lot of trial and error I now will usually buy a small piece and stitch with it and then I can tell if it will work.
