if you order 5 hides the price goes down 4 dollars a square foot, other wise springfield leather company is the way to go. email shellyhuard@thetanneryrow.com

I would start at 7 SPI. Pricking irons create a slanted stitch. Overstitch w/ groover a more flatter stitch. Two brands I would recommend is vergez blanchard and dixon. Vergez is top of the line, dixon works equally as well but isn't as well made as vergez (I had to grind the teeth down to get it to a smaller size). Ordering from dixon directly they can do it for you for free.

its up to you. I use .58mm thread on 7 spi and also .8mm tiger thread. I prefer .58mm at 7spi and I personally would want to use .8mm at 5-6 SPI. Its not unusual to use .8mm at 7SPI.

Best Characteristics And Type Of Leather Grades
DavidL replied to DavidL's topic in All About Leather
Which specific one did you get? I was going to get the green sueded one but it was bought before I could get a chance to purchase it. Its suspect that a second quality can be sold at 3.5 a square foot, meaning that the store bought it at 2-2.50 a square foot and is selling it at a dollar profit, which is the exact reason I don't eat at taco bell... I was also thinking to make a large purchase but I'm hoping that only scratches are there and the majority is even. At 2.5 or 3.75 if 50 percent is usable its still a good deal. -
Really stunning pieces. I would strike up a consignment deal to place regular non tooled strap w/ just your logo for 100-120 dollars (use a sewing machine to save time). Not such an outrageous price for a strap and you might as well put the other straps in the store and it would be free advertising for your product that you can add signage stating that custom work is available.

Thanks for he response, cleared up a lot of things for me. Could sealant be used for dyes instead of atom wax do you think, I always worry that the dyes will come off on my hands and sealants look like they work better than finishes.

Do you use a rig to get your logo to stamp directly in the middle??

Rounding A Corner With A Pricking Iron (Vergez Blanchard)
DavidL replied to mrtreat32's topic in Sewing Leather
I can't find it now.. I saw it not even two days ago on ebay from a seller in washington I believe that had 500-1000 sales he/she only had 432 and 332 in almost every colour. When I come across it il send you the link. -
I have one in 9 SPI i don't use it at all since I got european pricking irons, they do okay.
-
you may want to get lanona.com and park your website on that too, when customers type www.lanona.com it redirects them to lanona.co. Nothing major, but its worth the hassle.

Need Help With Business Name Ideas!
DavidL replied to zaynexpetty's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I would advise against the word mercantile, as its an outdated word -> giving the idea that your brand is outdated. It is an interesting word but you have to look at it in the eyes of the consumer. Mercantile would work well if you are selling spices or supplies, not leather goods. Only my opinion. If your doing custom goods like holsters and sheaths and the such using your name is normal. If your end goal is to get it into stores a more universal name would work and also your own name could work, you could go either way, its your choice. -
Need Help With Business Name Ideas!
DavidL replied to zaynexpetty's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
Depends what your market is that you are selling to that should dictate your company name. "first name" Petty leather goods may work if you intend to keep it small. Only companies that works for retail market are louis vuitton, Phillip Lim, Versace ect and they are mostly high end. If I call it Dave's leather it sounds like its made out of my garage, which it may be and the quality could be very good, but the name of the company doesnt help convey that. If you are selling home made soup, Dave's Garden selection makes it sound natural. Your brand name and product should be on the same wavelength if that makes any sense. It was easier in the past decades to incorporate your name into the business since everything was based off the quality of your product, now with all the internet and marketing thats available people make names that are catchy, unique and work to stand out in the market. Back in the day there were most likely a few big companies that sold X product now there are 20 times more that sell the same thing. -

They probably won't think of petty as a last name. If its under petty and Co, it could work. I wouldn't take a chance and hope that the customer will know its your last name, some others will be unsure. Large companies spend tens of thousands of dollars and 6-8 months on a business name, all through a firm that handles that sort of thing. So you aren't overthinking it, In business theres no such thing as overthinking. If you don't go through the facts and do market research, don't bother going into business it won't end well. It should have these things: Memorable Give off the main vibe of the company short non generic -
Im thinking of getting 150 sq of HO from a retailer that I will be getting other leathers from. My concern is that the leather is a year old and is old stock of leather and won't be as good as straight from the manufacturer. On average how long does it take till leather starts to get dry and unpleasant. I will consider buying straight from the manufacture to get new stock of leather, unless the leather thats a year old will react the same to dye and has no disadvantage compared to the brand new stock.
-
I understand. When I move out I will for sure get a work bench and a tool rack to store my tools.
-
The thing with the pricking iron is that it gives a channel to place your awl into. I can't be sure but with a overstitch/pricking wheel it is harder to get the awl to pierce straight because there is no channel.
-
I don't know if that would work in my situation. I have to get new furniture and all that, but I don't think Im get a heavy table that I could mount the heavy metal on. I have seen people use a log and that could deaden the sound, so i might as well give that a try.

To be honest I can see Macca's point of view where the iron will break if i am pressing down on 12 oz stiff vegtan and if there is a defect or hairline crack in the iron I could break the iron. However, the pricking iron when hit down has worked the best so I will have to try the press if I can find one at a decent price. I also have a newer iron and the teeth have no taper to it compared to the older irons. If it breaks I'm out 50 dollars, but I can get a brand new vergez pricking iron which I have been waiting to upgrade to and I may just end up going camping where I can be as loud as I want.
-
okay I think I'll try the press. 3 tons presses here are expensive - 200+... Do you guys mind posting a picture so I can see how well the impressions come out. Would a one ton have enough vertical clearance and pressure for 6-9 ounces of veg? Most manufactures don't state the clearance which isn't helpful.
-
I think I would prefer the iron better than the pricking wheel. The reason is the iron I feel makes for a better stitch since it makes a deep impression and the stitches sink in. I find when I hit the iron lightly to simulate the pricking wheel that the stitches look more like it was done with an overstitch. I don't know for sure if the wheel can make an impression as deep as the pricking iron or halfway into the leather. If only it was cheap so I could give it a try. Thanks for the info I most likely would have damaged my dixon iron, which i have been try to upgrade to a vergez for a while now. Anyone try the arbor press and use very slight force just for an impression that isn't deep but is indented. Anyone tried a pricking wheel with good success while stitching? Or has a set up where there is no noise while hammering in an apartment.
-
Im moving into an apartment and the way I have it set up now it will make too much noise. I have viewed his videos and the noise is more of the issue. I have been able to get the holes to line up properly through some practice. Are you positive that the iron teeth will get damaged using a 1/2 ton arbor even with a poundo board? I have a dixon iron and the teeth are a lot stronger than vergez and looks like it would be able to hold up if I don't use with all my strength. The iron is 7 SPI, and the teeth aren't that small. Only thing is I don't know if the press will be able to make an impression like a hammer would without distorting the leather. It is not the traditional way but its one of the few options, other is to find a way to absorb the sound from the iron while hammering

Im looking to use an arbor press for pressing a pricking iron into 2 layers of 3/4 oz veg tanned glued together. Has anyone done this with any success? 1/2 ton strong enough for pricking iron and stamps to be pressed.
