  1. another thing is angelus dyes leave a chemical smell on the leather that doesn't seem to fade, but is not noticeable unless its close to your face. Unsure if fiebings is the same.
  2. if you search up jacob patterson art you can see this person paint with angelus acrylic on leather shoes. I believe he does 3/5 coats all very light. With drying time in-between
  3. I got it to somewhat work a few days ago might need a proper anvil since i was hammering the area on a unstable wood table, which is why my burr didn't sit flush and i couldn't peen the post. I now see the error i was making appreciate the responses.
  4. I use thread thats .5mm thick and i have no problem getting it through. If you need specifics. Hold onto the end of the thread, find the spot you want to pierce with your needle and roll that spot back and forth with your thumb and index until the thread fibers loosen and you can pierce the needle through the separated thread. I wouldn't worry about these small things until i need to worry about them. But thats just me. Hope this helps.
  5. Confused at the arbour presses and how they work to cut the dies. I can't seem to find any info on this. The press i see on harbour freight has a small metal rod. Does it include a plate to put onto the press so that it can go over the entire die, or does the press put pressure on the metal pieces that are inside the die. Any help would be great.
  6. https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150131553076948 At the end of the video he puts a dab of glue and pushes the loose thread into the slit.
  7. will this work on cutting dies too?
  8. I remember seeing in a video a worker hammer in a die with a rubber mallet. Will that give a perfect cut every time? or will it be hard to control the die from slipping and ruin a piece of leather? Also if hammering the die in with a rawhide/rubber mallet will the blade stay sharp for a long time and will the die keep its shape. If this is not feasible what are the alternatives for a clicker that a) i can potentially make myself inexpensive(300 or less) c) 14:51 will something like this work?
  9. Fineleatherworking is a good supplier which i have bought from 2 times and only one item was a lemon out of 4-5 tools, which is the fault of the manufacturer not the store. If you insist on not buying from fine leather working ebay has a seller that sells spools from france.
  10. If I ever get a buffing wheel that would work out really well, for all my tools. I do have a strop with compound I can try on. Thank you everyone for the replies.
  11. okay thanks for resolving that for me, now all i need is that bob douglas awl blade thats currently on backorder.
  12. so much info to take in . Seems like resolene is a popular finish, I'll will give it a shot. I have atom wax and the finish is shiny. So I can use saddle soap to clean the leather, apply my dye, add the resolene/atom wax, then the kiwi polish? or will the mixture of this cause a bad reaction? Its a lot of questions, but I'm about to make a purchase and would like to get the proper stuff.
  13. you are almost guaranteed to get streaky paint on the first try (with acrylics), I would suggest getting a cheap air brush if you are planning to do a lot of dyeing.
  14. sounds good. Will also pick up a knipshield clicker knife so i won't have to get as many rotary blades.
  15. tried it out today and it works great. For those looking at this thread I cut the thread with 5mm of excess, cut a piece of leather that revealed only the thread, but protected the leather product from burn marks and singed the polyester thread.
  16. I have no clue about awl hafts i usually buy with the blade attached so this is new to me. When I had a tandy awl when i started, it took me a while to get the blade into position and it had to be fixed into the hole even with a collet. My question would be does the blade sit in position by just tightening the collet or does a vice need to hold the blade and then the haft is inserted?
  17. Spoke to soon. Found the tool i was looking for http://springfieldleather.com/19629/Sharpener%2CReplacementDisk%2C45mm/
  18. Can this awl haft be used with a bob douglas regular blade, without the use of a vice or additional tools to set the blade? http://www.zackwhite.com/Osborne-Sewing-Awl-Haft_p_851.html or bearmans awl haft with colette
  19. I have an olfa rotary cutter and the blade may need to be replaced in a months time. The blade get expensive if they have to be replaced every month. Are there tools out there that help sharpen rotary blades?
  20. Have the same groover and have to say out of the tools that came in the starter kit i purchase a while ago it was the most useful. It is a craft tool and not a professional tool so results won't look professional. If you don't mind spending some money bruce johnson has some groovers on his website that would work better.
  21. This question is for leather finishing. Which finish has- best protection less distortion/ no darkening of leather Shine finish matte finish Distinct smell
  22. I use angelus dye and so far so good. Fiebings also makes a dye in all colours. I would use dye instead of acrylics they penetrate the leather, acrylics coat the surface.

    Chromexcel

not a reply either. I always thought springfield stocked regular chromexcel not seconds. What do regular go for per sq?
  24. For anyone that has the same problem - uneven knife edge I took the knife and ran the cutting edge on the sharpening stone until the edge was parallel, cut it on the stone at a 45 degree angle to put a secondary bevel and finished it up like a normal blade.
  25. Its more of a vintage/retro trend like ripped jeans over regular jeans. However having said that there are also just bad products that try to pass off as vintage. My take on it is if it was made on purpose to look vintage vs. a leather working trying to pass off below average work because of its flaws, that would be more "acceptable" and not a marketing ploy.
