Backpack Project: A Few Questions...
DavidL replied to ninovoa's topic in Satchels, Luggage and Briefcases
That is a question only the supplier can know to be absolutely sure. All vegetable tanned leather will be stiff and all chrome tan leather are the type of leather found on sofas. Ask for picture before buying online or better yet buy instore. -

6 spi pricking iron from barnsley selling for 150 for a set of two. How do these compare to dixon, vergez or any other makers for quality and price.

Im trying to source a few tools to complete my setup. Currently I have awl 9 spi pricking iron edger single line creaser Looking to buy: larger awl - 40-56mm - What is the right size for 5 - 6 stitches per inch? $20 6 spi pricking iron - barnsley pricking iron - anyone have any experience with these pricking irons or own a vergez blanchard and can compare. $150 for normal and portmanteau pricking iron 2 prong - $100 for two .8mm thread - Does this look proper on 6 stitches per inch or does 1mm look more appealing scratch compass - vergez blanchard $77 Is there anything that I'm missing to create a leather bag or any other brands that have cheaper price and are equal quality?

Where can I find the two awls that is in picture of your first post/ What number and brand pricking iron are you using? Lastly, when sewing through multiple layers are there any tips you can share to get the backside to item to look even. -
japanese pricking irons do a decent job, but the european/ english pricking iron are more precise

My Etsy Website, Critique And Feedback Needed
DavidL replied to danboy295's topic in Marketing and Advertising
For websites like etsy not much is needed to make your store presentable. Everything looks fine to me and the only thing I would do differently is take the picture of the cases in places people would use the guns ( by a river, in a forest, ect). In all honesty, the nerf gun holster is a niche market and I'm unsure how many people are in that specific market. I would market the holster/sheath for actual guns and knifes. Its up to you if you want to market to actual gun users, but I would expect that your sales would go up. Also if there are any forums for nerf guns or local small family own toy shops that would be where I would go, as well as ebay. -
idk if you found a solution, but i have a crazy idea that might work. Hair Clippers without a guard. Let me know if you try it out.

The thread I am using is .58mm and I am stitching 9spi on veg tan leather. While stitching I noticed that the thread does not fill out the holes and sometimes if pulled even slightly too rightly will cause uneven stitch. Which brand of linen, hemp or poly thread should I buy and what size for 9spi and 6-7spi and 5spi that will fit properly and look most appealing and allow for the most consistent stitch.

I do not know much about sewing machines so take my input with a grain of salt. The left twist is what I believe is for machine use, but I could be wrong. Hopefully a member with more knowledge will know

I am currently using the blanchard 38mm awl and would recommend it, although it does need to be sharpened on a stone. Stitching with the awl at 9spi works fine for what I'm working on, but most awls do not come in sizes below 30mm. The only ones i know of that are roughly 25mm are from good japan under the name Siewa professional awl .

My vergez blanchard 4 prong pricking iron at 9spi might have a small problem. The prongs on the outside are different sized (slightly thicker) than the middle prongs. My options are to sharpen the prongs slightly - last resort or to to find a way to keep the marks on the leather to be consistent because every couple marks the hole is slightly larger and some stitches look off. p.s I prick the marks on the leather till it almost through the back and finish off with an awl.

with the leather pieces in 2 sq by 2 sq the pieces are all from the back of the hide. I never bought a side before and want all the cuts made for the wallet to be the same thickness. I should have wrote in the original post that with the full hide I want to make only the out side portion of the wallet and the inside will be kangaroo or pigskin lining. So would the full side for the purpose of making thick heavy duty wallet exterior be only 10-15 sq feet of the hide and the rest would be too thin and stretchy. Id rather not pay for the belly portion if it is unusable for the exterior.

Im looking to make a few wallets for my friends and myself but am looking for the best option to make the most wallet out of a side of leather or individual piece. My options are to buy pre cut pieces of leather 2ft by 2ft and buy 4 sheets which totals 16 sq feet of usable leather or 20 sq ft side. If i buy a 20 sq feet side how much of it is usable?

From what I heard linen thread that is properly treated with rosin and beeswax will outlast polyester. Try barbours thread they come in different thicknesses or if you want polyester check out http://www.thethreadexchange.com

design it yourself you will end up with a wallet no one else has

I Can Stitch Perfectly At 6Spi But Not At 9Spi. Whats Wrong?
DavidL replied to DavidL's topic in Sewing Leather
I have both the pricking iron from goods japan and one from vergez blanchard both 9 spi Im having trouble having the awl go through at the same spot on the backside of the leather no matter how straight it looked when i pierced the leather a few will come out of line and make the stitch look undersirable. How do you keep the hole straight is there a method or is that all with practice? -

DavidL replied to DavidL's topic in Sewing Leather
john james size 2 1mm in diameter. The issue I feel is that there is a lot of room in the hole for the thread to move around so the stitch doesn't sit as tight as the thicker thread maybe different leather would help but I'm still unsure. -

I Can Stitch Perfectly At 6Spi But Not At 9Spi. Whats Wrong?
DavidL posted a topic in Sewing Leather
When I was making a small leather roll for my tools I used an overstitch wheel at 6spi to stitch 2 garment leather pieces together and the stitching came out nicely. But when I stitch with a pricking iron at 9spi with the same tools but smaller thread .57mm vs 1mm on the 6spi the stitching came out not as expected. So my question to you is what is causing the 9 spi stitched item to look crummy. My technique is - back needle first then front needle goes under the needle that came through the back and goes on the top of the hole. The front slopes up and to the left and the back slopes down p.s I used a 38mm awl on both spi, same technique and used garment leather on both Thank you. -
I recommend the awls on goods japan as well they are made extremely sharp off the bat and last that way for a long time. But if you intend to do professional work I use a vergez blanchard awl and sharpened till it was sharp ( google fineleatherworking).
