  1. The problem is not your ability it is the materials you are using. I would recommend scraping cash together to get some veg tan leather and have a hand at edge burnishing, you will also see a big leap in quality. If you must use chrome tan leather skiving the edges and rolling the edges will make a big difference. I also have a shipment coming to me from the u.s for kip leather (stiff vegtan leather - 1mm-1.2mm)
  2. Just made a purchase from fineleatherworking but did not order the knife, but soon realized that i needed a new knife. Please tell if the knife works out for you.
  3. go take a leather working class if u can. If not pick one thing like saddle stitching and stitch 100m worth of thread and compare ur last 1m to ur first 1m to see any progress
  4. i personally grown to like the thread, but for it to not twist is another thing to worry about while stitching. I received a reply from abbey england who originally sent me the thread and they said that the tension of the thread while it was being winded could have been tighter and make the thread seem like it is less than 500m. If they solve the problem I would encourage people to buy from them but if not I will shop somewhere else. Not important, but has anyone order a new tiger thread and the end of the thread is not tied to the middle? I included a pic of 7 SPI
  5. A simple card case can cost 5-7 dollars for thread/rivets, glue, and leather. Selling a card case for $20- 25 will get $15+ for 20 mins of work.
  6. Looks to be buffalo type hide(could be cowhide or buffalo). Most likely top grain quality at the most could bonded leather with an embossing.
  7. Do not be afraid to lose customers that are not in your target market. Either market to vegans using vegan-friendly alternatives or stick to leather specifically. So many things are made from leather and the more people are in favour of the use of leather than not. Your statement is almost like saying if you were a butcher to just close shop (The meat eating pop. is roughly over 70% and that goes for vegan leather as well) . There is a market for handmade niche leather goods, but it is also highly saturated. Creating a brand name, loyalty, good service/product and a good marketing plan is what makes your company successful. Good luck.
  8. 7 spi and the stitches come out rather nice, but the dye is inconsistent. Still a decent deal for 350m of thread for 24 cad. Il post a pic once I get my camera working.
  9. I just received two .8 mm tiger thread in black and mid brown. Both of the threads have a few things that made the thread worse than tandy thread I have used in the past. First the black thread when put side by side had 3/4th the amount of thread of the black roll. The brown thread had problems with discolouration and there was different shades of brown throughout the thread (not that noticeable but not what I expected). Is this how tiger thread is suppose to be for quality or did I receive some old stock of the thread?
  10. It would help a lot of beginner leatherworker and even experience leather workers to have a review section added to the forum. They could be divided into sections on knives/mallets and cutting equipment, pricking irons, awls, thread, dyes/waxes and finishes, sewing machines, industrial machines (skivers, clickers, rivet setters, plasma cutters). I think it would help people find the proper tools that they are looking for.
  11. veg tan would work the best and somewhere between 4-8oz would work. Chrome tan would not be rigid and won't hold its shape.
  12. I agree Vergez blanchard are most likely the best around in my opinion. However, I didn't buy another vergez since they get pricy if they are over 4 prongs so i settled for a dixon iron which I hear is a good alternative. If any one is interested I will post a comparison of the two irons.
  13. Im purchasing the smallest copper rivets I can find at #14 but I intend to use larger ones in the future. Can a number 14 copper rivet be set by a number 10 rivet setter? I don't see why it wouldn't work because the hole is not larger than the washer and should be able to push it down. Has anyone used a larger rivet setter for a smaller sized rivet and does it do the job just as well.
  14. zackwhite.com has angelus dye in a green shade. They should be worth a look as well as turtlefeathers.com
  15. I live in the greater toronto area. I found zackwhite.com and think they should work for what I'm looking for. If u have any mortar shops that you know of I'd be happy if you would share them.
  16. I have looked at tandy, but a lot of their products are marked up by 50-150% compared to other retailers like Springfield (customer service haven't sent me a reply on a few questions I had). Are there any fellow Canadians that know of any shops that sell leather tools and leather at a reasonable cost.
  17. where is this from? pricking irons look alright
  18. The size of the wallet is a bit larger than a credit card. One piece of leather is double the width of a credit card and folded in half length wise and there are two smaller pieces that are smaller than the size of a credit card. How many wallets can I expect to make realistically and made to the same quality avoiding the belly area and flimsy parts of the leather.
  19. add me to the list as well. Id like to give it a look
  20. would a 2/3 ounce leather be too thin for a small card case with 3 layers at the thickest? could it withstand abuse and be sewn properly?
  21. Springfield leather has 2/3 ounce tooling leather for $4.29 a square foot.
  22. the artist used a sponge and applied blue as a base, then green and finally black to add depth.
  23. zelikowitzleather.com or tandyleather are both canadian supplier. In my opinion both are rubbish. Goodsjapan.com has free shipping and leathercrafttool is another good supplier, but both in japan.
  24. I remember reading somewhere that real leather burns and fake leather melts.
