  1. I got it to work with just the small anvil and without a secure table. It would look better if I used something under it that solid like an oak log. Also the washer/burr doesn't sit flush with the leather (leather is 3 layers of 2/3 oz. Hopefully, it is because it is not set properly.
  2. Springfield leathers wouldn't risk their reputation trying to make a quick buck on a regular order. I would imagine that this happened during shipping. In the future I'm going to purchase leather from springfield leather, hopefully it will turn out ok.
  3. Thank you. I will do that.
  4. Is this from personal experience? i emailed springfield leather and they say it comes from south america. I may order both hides and decide from there.
  5. Not too sure. Front side looks great, backside not so much. My technique matches his, but it could be how i pull the stitches or most likely the leather. Since moving from chrome tanned to veg tan my stitches looked better, yet not how i have imagined.
  6. My leather that I am currently working on is 2/3 oz kip leather that is hard to the touch and very stiff. Are their any leathers in 2/3 oz that has a stiffness to it but has soft hand or are all 2/3 oz leathers stiff. I have my eye on springfield leather 2/3 or 3/4 premium tooling leather any one had a chance to try it out?
  7. I played around with the back loop with every variation and they make the back better, at a loss of the slant on the front stitches. I believe throwing the stitch is what I'm missing. Pictures attached will show how i stitch, please advise the technique of throwing the loop, I'm confused. I don't think I'm throwing the back loop over the thread at all because the two threads do not touch in the middle. Appreciate the link, I've seen it a bunch of times, Nigel really is very good isn't he?
  8. thanks camino exactly what I was looking for.
  9. A picture is included below. Some areas are hard to access (thread will be on inside of wallet and be hard to tie). I can secure the knot but I'm not a hundred percent certain it will last. threads only go vertical or horizontal, but never both. How would you go about securing the ends?
  10. if you call or email sean(Fineleatherworker store owner) he can order the tools along with his shipments that he sells for his store.
  11. I have a little metal anvil that slightly bigger than the rivet. do I need a full sized anvil?
  12. Looks like that would fix it. Much appreciated.
  13. The leather could have been over dyed in the factory. Sending an email to the company would help since they would know absolutely everything about leather, especially of dye coming off. When I overdue my projects I rinse the excess off with water and let dry and buff. If you do take my advice do so with a test piece since bridle leather is not a cheap bit of leather.
  14. il be sure to look at the dremels at the hardware store when i get a chance. Fixed my awl blade, but still a bend on the blade even though I tried to get it straight. Im getting good at polishing awls and they are scary sharp, which is why i should wear shoes, but so far no nicks.
  15. thanks for the reply. It wasn't retouched since the metal had no scratch/ polish marks. I found a solution to the uneven edges by shaving a groove into the edge of my stone and then push back and forth. The awl is still slightly curved though. Any one had this problem before?
  16. I've tried sharpening a very misshapen stitching awl on a stone and after 2 hours it still won't punch holes evenly. The problems with the awl are: it is slightly curved one slant of the awl is narrow angled and the edge beside has a high angle middle of the awl has a bulge. Not sure how this awl got through quality control, but it still seems redeemable.
  17. I stitch with the left needle in first then the right needle overtop of the left needle and on the top of the holes that the right thread goes over the backside thread. Just to be clear when you say wrap the thread in clockwise direction that you are saying move the back loop over the thread? Thanks for the reply.
  18. receive that knife yet trox? pen knife is getting dull and there is nothing better than a new tool.
  19. i keep the thread over the back loop, yet the stitch looks very straight not zig zagged. Hopefully one day il get this saddle stitch perfect.
  20. The leather I'm using is 2.5oz calf leather, thread is .8mm tiger thread and stitching 7spi. Front side of the leather the stitching looks fine, however on the backside the stitches change from straight to slanted. Im not sure what is making the stitches change from project to project but one project can have slanted stitches on the back and the other the stitches on the back will be straight. Any tips will be great.
  21. The knife I'm talking about is a japanese utility knife. It has a 4 cm edge that is suppose to be straight. But there is a sight dip in the middle that is 1-2mm, making the left and right of the knife extend further out. How do i strop/ grind the edge so that it is straight? Also only one edge is a cutting surface does grinding the other edge help the cut?
  22. abbey england.com search for dixon irons - 65-78 us dollars
  23. not sure what you mean, springfield leather has 4-5 different horweens leather in a range of sizes.
  24. update- Abbey England sent a reply saying they will send another roll out to me. Overall happy with the customer service and will but there again. I've grown to like the thread, but i now have to check every thread so that the thread does not twist so that it lays flat.
