    Hello from India

I am new to the forum. Like to start leather crafts purely for personal need. Primarily watch straps. I am watch collector and hobby-watch makers. This is an effort to be self supplier of my own leather demands.

    NEW member

I want to thank everyone here for allowing me to become a member. I have just gotten back into working with leather after a long time away from it. I have already made a few things, cross draw gun belt, standard gun belt, and a wallet for my wife. Thanks for the chance to show off what I have made and to see the quality of work others do.
  4. So, just more curious how people start to finish there projects. Working on a set of spur straps.. and I am hand stitching it. Would you make your groove and stitch marks before you dye it? or after? Do you glue the front piece to the lined piece before stamping or after? How do you do your steps when making something?

    Joining in from Idaho

Well, decided to look up any forums I could find on leather working, and luckily this one is still in use. Wanted to say hi from the outdoor state of Idaho. I have been into leather most of my life, but only within the last year, maybe not even that long did I start working with leather. I use to think my classic vehicles took all my money, now.....leather working does. I mostly do projects for myself, a few for family members, and have done two commissions so far for friends. In all honesty, I have not done many projects all together. But since family and friends seem to like what I do, I guess I am alright at it, but there are so many more things that I could be better at or that I have not learned how to do yet. So I am here to get help, as well as provide any help I can give with what little I know. Adding a couple of projects to this post. one of my personal archery bracer which I love how it turned out. The other is a fancy collar for my girl Saya (sigh-ya).

    Sewing machine help

Hello, I am looking at buying my second sewing machine and need help, I have never used a machine before so I am looking for something that's user friendly has a servo motor and a speed reducer. I had bought a jack sewing machine over a year ago paid $1850.00 for it and never been able to use it, can't figure out how to thread properly I had it threaded once before and it sewed but the it had a bird's nest on the bottom of the leather never been able to fix that, now when sewing it does about 2 stitches and the top thread breaks so I don't know if it's still bird nest's on the bottom the machine has become such a head ache that it just sits there. There's no youtube video's on it I called and e-mailed the company I bought it from and no help was given from them at all so I e-mailed the manufacturer with no help at all from them either. I know I need a walking foot industrial and I have it figured out down to 2 machines the cobra class 4 and the cowboy 4500 price wise both machines are the same for the package I am looking at. I make a large variety of products mainly use veg tan, english bridle and suede for lining. I need to be able to sew from 2 oz to about 18 oz. I have chosen these 2 machines because they are cylinder base with flat table accessory when needed and have a throat length of 16 1/2 as I make anywhere from wallets, bags, holsters etc. I would like input on these machines and how well they do the job I need. What are the pros and cons and what are the experiences people have with the company they bought it from. Any help is greatly appreciated thank you in advance.

  9. Hi, I started learning to work with leather recently. I've learned some on my own but I know there are the right ways and in some cases easier ways to do things. I've made some leather bags, cuffs, keychains, pattern weights I live in Norwalk CT and I'm looking for classes or a leatherworker willing to show me skills in New York City or Fairfield County, CT. Below is what I've learned and what I know I know nothing about. Please let me know if you know of someone or ask them to respond to my posting. Thanks for your help, Dennis Leatherworking skills Know a little: Patternmaking Measuring leather Cutting accurately Snapping, riveting, grommeting - poorly Hand sewing Gluing Grooving (?) Marking holes Punching holes with awl 2 needle sewing Threading needles and securing ends Process Machine sewing thin leather using walking foot attachment on home sewing machine Cutting straps Punching holes Stamping letters Edges Beveling Sanding Burnishing Buffing Know nothing about: Reinforcing/ Gluing to backer board Wet forming Dyeing Choosing leather Treating flesh side Lining Carving or detailing

    Skiver/Splitter

I’m a Newbie to This Arena And Want to Buy Some Tools That Will Last For Quite a While. I want to get a skiver/splitter. Have Heard Much About Osborne 84 And 86. I Also Recognize There Are Many Others Out There That Are Similar. I Don’t Mind Spending The Money to Get a New Osborne 84 But I’m Wondering if it Would be a Better Idea For me to Get an Vintage One And Get it Cleaned up or Even Another Brand /model. Any suggestions would be very grateful.
  11. Hello, i am just starting out and i figured out real fast that this is a VERY expensive hobby starting up, but I've found and made some things to cut cost that i wanted to share with yal to help out, ill label whats free, and what i payed for and how much. 1. FREE... wine box from any liquor store.just ask them if they have one to give to you, they just throw them out. Makes a tool holder, storage box.. anything you want, just be creative. 2. CHEAP...Bar soap containers. 1$ at walmart... for holding all your small stuff you want to keep separate. Like the swivel knife and stamps. 3. CHEAP/FREE.Trash bags/walmart bags. Used to lay down under leather when dying. Be careful with walmart bags though, alot of times they'll have holes and not as flat. CHEAP... tool storage boxes.. bought a pack of 4 of them at walmart for 9 bucks. Good for keeping things organized. FREE/CHEAP... old white t-shirts.. instead of throwing away the old white work shirts. Keep them cut them up. Good for tons of stuff.. buffing towels, speading glue and dye, what ever you can think of. CHEAP... stanley box knife. Couple bucks at wal mart and you can get 50 blades for 5 bucks i believe. FREE/CHEAP... BOOKS! Scribd.com 8 bucks a month and you get a ton of books(including al stohlman)..you can also download them onto your phone, using your free 30 day trial(wink, wink).. and if you cancel membership before the month is over you dont pay a dime. Again (wink wink) its not letting me put up the pics so if you want to see them, or have any questions, send me a message and ill send them to you somehow! Addition! Ill add stuff as i think of them and do them... The internet/youtube!! I have already learned a ton of stuff off youtube, and when you have a better understanding of what your doing and how to do it you'll waste less products and save money... Tandy leathers offers a free beginner's class go take it!!
  12. My buddy and I had an idea to make an over-sized swing arm bag (big enough to hold his leather jacket and a few other things). We came up with an idea and then I headed off to the garage to make one. I started with a rough template I made. Late into the project I noticed a piece of the leather damaged that ended up on the flap Because of the way the bag expands I need to figure out a better way to secure it to the bike. I tested it the other day and the fit is nice, but the flap still needs some polishing. I would love to hear your thoughts on addressing this issue.

    Servo Motor

New in the box. I'm not interested in going through ALL this stuff I got or trying to sell it, but I will let this go before i move. I bought this over a year ago, but never took it out of the box. $100 + actual shipping (or pick it up, just as good) http://www.leathermachineco.com/shop/brushless-digital-d-c-servo-motor/
  16. I bout the machine "like new" last March, and it still is...I used it only twice to practice stitching a belt, but then life kinda got hectic and never got around to using it again. Then, from Texas, I moved to Alabama and the machine has been stored this whole time...and yes, It is fully assembled, you can see it run and test it out before purchase. Ok, as for price....I have 3 options for you to consider... 1. $2700, my price of the machine INCLUDING my whole investment of merchandise for my attempted leather business (lol), which values at approx. $3500-$4000 at least..ALL purchased from Tandy Leather......THIS consists of NEW HUGE spools of thread*, NEW dyes and some used bottles of different color dyes, conditioner/gloss, NEW tools (multiple size punches, riveting kits, jewel setters, marker, hand carver, etc) , NEW conchos, jewels, eyelets, NEW belt buckles, LOTS of NEW UNUSED RAW leather belts, NEW belt loops AND tips, NEW packages of daubbers, 3/4" ALPHABET LETTER Leather punch set, guides, and maybe something I'm missing but whatever it is, its included! lol 2. $2500, price of the machine, spools of thread, and I will allow you to pick a few other things you might immediately need...To be discussed 3. $2250 machine only, and yes, the thread...I wouldn't want to sell you a machine without AT LEAST having that to get started *If I cannot find the thread at that moment, I WILL send it to you...Off hand, at this very moment, I can't recall where it is stored but I do have them Please consider these options and let me know how you feel, I do want to let it go, for someone else to use and benefit from so once you contact me, we can talk and see what will better accommodate each other because I have other business venture plans as well love... thank you for your time! Hope to speak with you soon!!! #GodBless

Need Advice On Buying A New Knife.

I have been having some trouble cutting round corners and circles out of leather. Right know I have a utility knife, which works good for cutting straight lines for the most part, and an x acto style knife, which I have been using for cutting corners. The x acto is too flimsy and tends to bend when I am cutting corners, making the cut at an angle, most of the time. I would like a knife that is that same style, but with a sturdier blade that wont bend. Anyone have any suggestions? I almost bought this knife, but decided I better ask for some advice before doing so: http://usaknifemaker.com/industrial-knife-set-especially-designed-for-leather.html#.U785SajPmO0 Thanks, Zayne

    How To Get Started

My name is Thijmen, and i'm trying to get started with leatherworking. i'm mostly interested in making functional items. but i can't figure out where to buy tools and what tools i'll actually need. so far i have: a curved leather needle (half a circle) a knife that easily cuts through leather. a set of chisels and gouges hole puncher tongs i also read about needing a mallet but, would a clawhammer with a rubber cover do (with that cover it'd pretty much be a rubber mallet in function) things i think i still need: an edge beveler piercer something to make grooves in the leather a steel ruler a self healing cuttingboard a marble slab (i plan to get a marble cutting board) materials i have: 2mm thick full grain leather which was supposed to cushion expensive couches. i have 2 garbage bags full of this mostly half skins. black thread suitable for leather (thats all i know about it) and a handful of buckles, buttons and similar things things i plan to make: wallets (seems like a good starting point) bags/backpacks (when i'm good enough) if i get good enough i also plan to make my own boots but that will wait untill i'm good enough in a few years the problems i have: is there anything i'm missing? and where should i buy tools. a steel ruler or a cutting board isn't hard to get but an edge beveler or groove maker is harder to find. thanks in advance

If they are purchased through my site and you order 10 or more I will ship USPS free of charge anywhere in the U.S.A. check them out at: www.givezees.com (my site) or http://www.amazon.com/gp/aag/main/ref=olp_merch_name_2?ie=UTF8&asin=B0056ZSHTA&isAmazonFulfilled=0&seller=A28AP9BV8VA02U email me with any questions and I'll do my best to tell you what I know. latigo@givezeesdotcom Thanks!
