  1. Im working on some pieces to make a cue case and all the pieces came out pretty consistent(fiebings saddle tan), I thinned it slightly and very happy with the color especially the shoulder pad(thanks Dwight that was the color i was looking for). The piece im having problems with is with a heavy strip of 11 oz. im going to be using on the main body(bottom right in pic.) I dyed it same as other pieces and when it dryed it was almost same color as it was before i dyed it. So is added another coat wasnt much better. So i figured i would try full strength and guess what brown color with almost no color in spots. What do you think is the problem? I have never worked with that thick of leather I usually work with 5-6 and 8-9oz. Was it just soaking it up? Anything i could have done different to get a consistent color? I cleaned all the leather with alcohol and water with a sponge. Do you think if i apply another coat thinned it will match or do you think it will still be too dark? I think im going to start just ordering drum dyed skirting from W&C and skip the dying process not much choices of color but lot less stress. Dwight i tried to message you but it said could not receive messages. I know you could definitely help me out on this.
  2. Just do like i did when i first started or made something different for first time. Just tell them you will only charge them for the cost of materials to do it.(leather, thread, snaps, rivets, dyes, top coat etc.) Works out good and you get the practice without being out money.
  3. Thanks tossik i think im going to give it a try. Do you dye or just leave yours natural?
  4. Got a few questions: 1. I usually use just Resolene at probably 70% and when dry brush and apply parrafin wax like a using kiwi shoe polish and have got great results for the short term. But I was wondering about hot dipping would it be a lot more effective in waterproofing? 2. Should hot dip be done before or after dye? I know i could just order bridle or harness leather but i usually stamp or tool veg tan. 3. Also on the other end of the spectrum, is there a way to keep the natural color of great quality leather without darkening it? Even if i just apply Resolene, it darkens the leather somewhat (example shown in pic) The dog collar is done just with Resolene.
  5. Thanks guys for the advice! Hopefully with your help i will get it lined out.
  6. I've got a 3 prong and it does make big enough holes but spacing between the holes is to close. Actually i used it many times until i got a stitching chisel but it is the devil to back out of the leather.
  7. Thanks Bill, What i have decided would be the best may be the Seiwa 5mm. also meant 517 -00 on the needles
  8. I have been using .08mm poly thread and it looks to small for what i mostly use it for. I mostly work with 8-10 oz with 5 stitches per inch. I decided it would look better with 4 stitches per inch using maybe 1.2mm to give a more heavy duty appearance. I ordered main threads .045 which is about 1.1 or 1.2mm using C.S 57 -00. I always used a diamond stitching chisel and very seldom have to use an awl which makes it quick. Now the stitching chisel doesnt produce big enough holes and i have to use awl on every hole and I have to use needle nose pliers to pull through on the backstitches. Any suggestions on maybe if there is a stitching chisel that will produce large enough holes or are they all basically the same except the mm in between stitches? Any suggestions or am i just out of luck. If i cant find a chisel that will make larger holes i guess i better invest in a Douglas awl.

  14. Im pretty new to leather work done it for about 4 months now. I bought lot of old figure carving & stamping tools off older guy that was his dads. He made belts for Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. I have two tools i really dont know anything about. Looks like they are made from heavy steel rod and square rod material. The round one is stamped RD. Looks like some kind of matting tool but does someone have example of use. The square one definitely dont know what it was used for. Here is pic.
