Stiffening Leather
Red Cent replied to Red Cent's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I have read a bunch about the different cuts. However, I have always purchased double shoulders. Would it make any difference if I bought single bends instead? I am aware that the single bend includes a half of a shoulder. -
Stiffening Leather
Red Cent replied to Red Cent's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I have purchased all my leather from one place except the last order. This last order of leather contained beautiful lightly tanned, soft, and supple leather. First let me state I know very little about types of leather. And this is not to criticize anybody. If I continue to get this leather, I will have to increase the liner weight to achieve, I hope, the stiffness desired. But I may not. All the holsters prior to this last one has not needed any baking. Matter of fact, they did not need sunshine. At the end of the day, I turned a fan on them. Super stiff. But then the leather I used in the past was much stiffer. Could it be you folks have always used the soft and supple and need to bake and I have been using stiff and dry and had no need to bake? In our discussion, it seems you folks have a particular experience with your leather and I have my experiences with my leather and our experiences don't match. Anyone have any insight to this? -

Holster Lining Questions I Can't Yet Find Answers To.
Red Cent replied to Tallbald's topic in How Do I Do That?
Two 4 ounce is a little on the light side. I use 8-9 with a 4-5 liner. I skive the front fold on the 8-9 to make it easier. Glue them, square and even the edges, bevel, sand a round edge and burnish. I do this and I finish the holster except the sealer. Then I stitch. They may wrinkle a little but it is on the inside and never noticed. Skived the back fold on these:). They are 8-9/4-5 leather. -

Stiffening Leather
Red Cent replied to Red Cent's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks everybody. But....I thought as I was turning the oven on. I make the cowboy holsters with 2 pieces of leather. They are Weldwooded. Do I have to worry about runny glue much less the holsters coming apart? -

Yeah, I figured as much with the prune. OK, guys going to go set the oven. Thank you. -
I have never baked a holster. Not even in the sun. But I may have to now. Would someone note the specifics. I realize I should not boil the leather. And 30 minutes at 500 degrees might not work. Aside from those.................................

Mine is smaller than a nickel but I put it on the product. I don't ask permission. That is my baby. And I try to put the stamp in a very unobtrusive location.

This works better than a pencil eraser. Seriously.

Holster Patterns (Cutting)
Red Cent replied to JLSleather's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
JLS, yes I got the leather. As a somewhat novice on grading leather, I can say it looks really good. And it is supple rather than stiff as others have noted. The color is super consistent being a very light tan. Very little belly or neck waves. I cut out an 8-9 and a 4-5 for two holsters today and they are drying from a bath of NF oil. Tomorrow I will shoot the liner with Saddle Tan and hope they look good. I think the leather is very good and I will probably order from Roger again. He said I would like the leather and he is correct. I will report later on how the sewing and edge finish goes. This project is important as the product goes to a shooter in Idaho. "Still waiting for a response from RJF." Been more than one day? Call him back. I believe he is a one man operation but I like dealing with the man. -
Holster Patterns (Cutting)
Red Cent replied to JLSleather's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
JLS, the problem with a continuing thread is opening it up after a couple of days. Lots of stuff that may or may not matter. I agree that such a spot would help those of us who are not cognizant (I would say ignorant but people don't like that one. They accept cognizant) of the subject. I had made a pattern the other day and was cutting the pattern out of the poster board and got sloppy. I reprimanded myself and told myself that the sloppiness transfers to the leather and the product. And the same applies to cutting the leather. Follow the lines. $36.00 dollars huh? Didn't know you could buy anything from Tandy's and sell it for a profit. -
"why are you carrying a firearm with a chambered cartridge and not on safe?" 98% of us (me included) carry with a round chambered. I carry a Colt Commander "cocked and locked" and have done so for forty years. C&L means hammer cocked, safety on and a round is in the chamber. I have a Glock so I am not knocking them when I say I bet it was a Glock. You pull the trigger they go bang. Get your finger in the way they go bang. Snag the trigger on something and they go bang. The Glock has three different safeties but none keeps you from pulling the trigger.Kinda like any double action revolver would act. I have made the call and I am waiting for pricing on the liability insurance. And I will look at incorporating. Or LLC.

Where Can I Get Some?
Red Cent replied to Red Cent's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks. -
There is amongst us a tall and lanky cowboy who actually has gradually lowered his gun belt and now uses a hook on the buckle in the back of his pants to tie off. We recently had some discussions about a rig and this is the result.

There is a amongst us a tall lanky cowboy who evolved into wearing his gun belt so low, he actually uses his buckle on the back of his pants to tie off. We had talked some time back about me making some holsters. Well, recently we had some discussions and this came out of them. Now the belt can actually be cinched to stay up and those really long arms will fit.

Tandy Vs. Herman Oak Leather
Red Cent replied to Rocket6R's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Chief, I hope they are good. I ordered four double shoulders from Roger today. -
OK, I need raw material pretty bad. I guess I need to order online. I have never ordered leather online and would appreciate some recommendations from those who have had enough experience with certain vendors. I would like to place the order today. Not getting a whole lot of leather at first. To test the waters, I would like to order 4-5 veg tan double shoulders. Please.

Cross my fingers? That is a "I don't want to go there" subject. 'Course, the big problem is Murphy. He is running around this great big world creating havoc once in a blue moon here and once........... I would guess that I am not going to worry about it until I make my first $1,000,000.00. Kinda serious about that statement. Right now, the plaintiff would be wasting money on attorneys .
