  1. That is a nice pen is it hard to make them. I wouldn't even now how to go about it. Do you make this often or is it something new to you also where this is the first one you make. Ralph
  2. I have seen these machines sell in today's market for 2500-300 dollars. This machine is used to sew heavy boots. This machine is similar to the Landis one difference is that this machine comes with a hydraulic presser foot. It can handle sewing up to 7/8 thick. I will attach a picture of it and a video for you to see. The video quality is not great but worth sewing I guess.
  3. It's either you are not applying enough pressure a shop press would be ideal or the leaf is not dense enough to make the impression. Ralph
  4. I can make holsters, belts, pouches, and just about anything small that comes to my imagination but I want to learn the art of saddle making. We had a saddle shop here in Salinas years back but it closed down. If it was still open I would have gone and ask to see if I can volunteer my time to learn the trade. Are there any saddle making schools in California are these even worth it. Is there anybody out there in my are that wouldn't mind having me around as a volunteer to learn the trade, or am I asking something really stupid. I think that some people would charge to show you what took them years to learn and I think that is perfectly right but I am not rich just looking for someone that could benefit from my help and me as well. I picked up some books but this is not going to work I think this is more like a hands on thing.
  5. Weaver has one the Heritage Foot Press put with all the dies and all you'd probably spend around 2k try the one they sell at Springfield Leather Co. I have seen people convert these into foot presses by adding a chain and a pedal to it, it's possible. Ralph
  6. Johanna, Can you please remove me from the Adult Section, my kids navigate this forum with me now and they enjoy it as well, I would not want them to accidentally acces the section when I am not supervising them. It is vey interesting and I have nothing against it it's just because of my kids. God bless! Ralph
  7. These are videos of a skiving machine as well as some needle and awl machines since you are going to be making small items these machines will produce the best looking stitch. Your customers will appreciate the look of the stitch and it will never come apart each stitch is locked on these types of machines. You will definitely need a skiving machine and I attached a video of one. That machine new will go for around 5k last I checked but you can gt one for 1200-2000 dollars the Fortuna is a top of the line machine if I am not mistaken its made in Italy I could be wrong. In the other hand these are very slow stitchers they are maxed out at 300 stitches per minute, it might not be what you want since its going to take you a while to complete just one. I am sure you can find a Consew 206 and a Consew skiving machine at your location for around 2k-2.5k. Anyhow these are interesting videos in my book..... Ralph
  8. As for your hand tools I can tell you that Barry King has great tools, they are expensive but well worth it. I don't mind paying extra for quality. I always do tons of research before buying something. You can learn a lot from these great old timers on this forum, they are very helpful and don't mind sharing their advise. Look at Barry Kings website so you can get an idea of other hand tools you may need. Also think about using waxed linen thread, a lot of folks use them here I thinks it's more likes heavy duty type of thread Barbour is what it's called. Also you may want to look into needle and awl machines I like them a lot, you get the best stitch from them, but the 441 clones are far more versatile making them very popular in this community, I myself like old machinery but then again I tend to have an old soul. Good luck with your venture if I can help you in any way email me at RoyalLeatherDesign@gmail.com and don't bother with aliBaba items remeber that you need a reputable dealer to help you in troubles that you may run across.
  9. The type of thread you can use on this thin leather can be #69, #92, #138 but I wouldn't use anything larger than that I personally would use # 69 I could be wrong but other members will jump in as well can you post a pic of the inside of the cell phone case so we can see the construction of it like a side shot or something I am going to attach pics of the machines and links to them. http://www.leathermachineco.com/catalog.php?item=6 http://www.leathermachineco.com/catalog.php?item=5
  10. I don't think thats pipping or anything like that. That is a very well burnished edge I think or skived on the inside (of course) then turned over and sewn like a hem. The way you can tell if its burnished or skived look at the inside if its looks folded over and sewn then it was skived. I am not sure if it was just burnished being that you said it was thin leather, but then again pictures can be deceiving and what's thin to me might be thick to you, vise versa. If you wanted to accomplish this yourself the machine I would use is something like the Consew 206 rb-5 or a Pfaff 1245. Both of these machines are walking foot and do the same thing but I personally would get a Pfaff if I didn't need any customer service. Like I said if the piece of leather was skived you need a skiving machine as well you can get one from the Leather Machine Co. You can accomplish this look with a bottom feed only machine saving yourself a couple hundreds dollars or if you want to go all out which I would get a top and bottom feed machine. You can also get the sewing machine from Leather Machine Co. It's called the Class 18, it's a really nice machine but the service you get with it is amazing I don't make any money telling you this but since it looks like you are just starting out you are going to need his advise and he treats you well and doesn't get bothered when you call him his name is Steve. I called his competitor as well who also advertises here when I was buying a machine and he was short about it almost just answering yes or no it really bothered me it made me look stupid. I am probably going off topic here but it seems you are getting your stuff together and nothing is going to be of more value than the customer service you are going to receive unless your an expert and don't need it. Good luck with it and you can do these yourself my friend with the help of everybody here. Ralph
  11. I purchased a manual from Proleptic.net and only received a confirmation on my email. There is no tracking number or expected shipping date, absolutely no shipping info. Has anybody ordered any manuals from them and could tell me how long does it take to receive them. Ralph
  12. What tool gives you a better stitching drove the one that looks like a thing to make circles I forgot what it's called or the one that has an adjustable thing on the side I am clueless as what they are called sorry if I sound dumm I am going to google it I should of done that first instead of sounding like an idiot but you guys know what I'm talking about right?
  13. Why do you say that I think it looks good, practice makes us better and your more than halfways there so keep at it. I like the color on it what did you use. Did you have a hard time wet molding Ralph
  14. Like the ad says I have been looking at old Campbell's and Landis sewing machines and I came across this Landis 3 sewing machine for sale. The seller is asking $ 1900 or best offer for this machine I think it's a good deal since its in working condition. I would buy it if it was here in California I thought I would let you guys now if there is anybody in Calgary and looking for a Landis 3 this might be the one for you. If not let's just enjoy the photos old sewing machines are always interesting at least to me. Here's the link and photos (by the way it was posted on the 14 of this month) Ralph http://calgary.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-hobbies-crafts-Landis-3-Leather-Sewing-Machine-W0QQAdIdZ523562208
  15. Thanks Frank does Rons have as big a selection like Barry King does
  16. I contemplating on buying leather tools, I recently bough a Cyclone and want to match the quality of my stitcher to my hand tools. My mom would always tell us when we were kids that a tool is just a tool and a 1 dollar tool will do what a 100 dollar tool will do so save 99 dollars. My dad was different he always tell us it's the quality of tool that matters so he would buy snap on tools and my mom would be really pissed all the time. My dad had a thing about tools and he bought so may that eve naturally my parents divorced......sorry I went of topic but I am looking for the best leather hand tools I'm like my dad. I know Barry King has really good tools but are Ron's much better I am still going to buy tools from Barry being that he has a larger selection. Is Ron still making tools I read on a post he had retired is that correct? Are there any other tools makers that will match these gentlemen's craftsmanship. I know that Rons tools came with a sort of file to sharpen them, so I think he went the extra mile, am I correct? Thank you, Ralph
  17. Are you talking about the pull the dot snaps, with those you will ba able to tell fairly simple because they have a little tab that is visible. If its just regular snaps they are fairly all the same. If you are using these for a gun holster I suggest you use pull the dot snaps.
  18. Ihames I just picked up amCyclone a few days back so I will pass on the #9 Thanks! Ralph
  19. I am confused as to when ordering Barbour thread for a needle and awl machine what size thread would you guys use on it I was thinking like a 7 cord being that I mostly sew holsters dog collars etc. when you order it they ask if you want it left or right twist what does this mean if I am using a Cyclone sewing machine wich would I buy left or right twist is 7 cord too think or thick. What kind of wax should I put in the wax cup, the thread oil rom campbell I have also heard bees wax mixed with other stuff" how would you set up the machine. Any help appreciated... Ralph
  20. I would have bought the Adler no questions asked. That Consew is made in china and and Adler is a well German made machine. I think the Adler would have gone slow enough for what you have wanted it to do if it was still equipped with the Efka motor but then again you would need a 220 outlet
  21. They look great I love the third one as well did you use a sewing machine if so wich one and what kind of thread? Ralph
  22. I am posting this topic because I wanted to know why 441 clones like the Cobra and Cowboy offer a 25 inch throat depth. On a Campbell your throat leanght is 9 inches and saddles are made on these machines. The machines of the old century don't even have a throat length of 16 inches like most common 441 clones if not all. Why did manufacturers start increasing the throat depth? Is there really a justification of owning a 441 clone with the throat depth of 25 inches or is it just an overkill machine. If there are any members with such machine what do you use this machine for that you couldn't do with the regular 441 clone. The longest throat depth on the older needle and awl machines is 12 inches and it is a Cyclone machine. These needle and awl machines have been working for decades, I would also like to know what is the oldest 441 clone that is still working today. If theses Campbell machines have been working for so long I wonder why they didn't make a needle and awl clone affordable just like the 441?
  23. I seen this machine on Craigslist. I am not interested in it but I have never seen the Tailor brand. I am able to identify most machines by the Internet and this forum but I have never heard of the Tailor brand it almost looks like a 441 clone. This machine just caught my eye for. Being unusual ya least for me. Any input appreciated. Thank you Ralph
  24. Check out the Tandy Learher Stire they have basic tooling kits this question has been previously answered in this forum so use the search tool on the too of the site it is very useful and you will find all the info you need. Good luck! Ralph
