  1. Second attempt at lacing I am getting better I think, but I still have a few flubs. I wish I would have taken the time to stamp out the back ground now, but the leather dried on me and I though it would end up better to just leave it alone. Its hard to keep big projects from drying out in the summer sun in Tucson.
  2. Hit it with a coat of polish, made a felt bag for it, and sent it off today. Thanks Bob Thanks. I always liked the Jonah story. Thanks Bill I am not good at traditional floral carvings, and I am not a basket weave fan ever since I had to clean my show saddle with a tooth brush as a kid.
  3. If you think that bag took forever to stitch, you should try a guitar strap! I like that messenger bag. Is it your own design or a pattern?
  4. I used the 2-2-2 deal but I didn't enlarge my holes enough. They certainly looked bigger when I did it, but once I started lacing it was obvious they weren't big enough.
  5. I was inspired by the great bible covers I saw on this site, and thought I would give it try. It is also my first try at lacing. Art work by: Pieter Lastman in 1621.
  6. I might wait a bit on this machine, and if it doesn't sell, I might offer them a bit less. I know better than to try to settle on tools, and go ahead a buy the good stuff to start with.
  7. I don't want to sound snobby, but I am trying to get away from traditional designs as much as possible. I have nothing against traditional. I used to really love it until I got Al Stohlman books and saw that 90% of stuff I see tooled in leather came from one of those books. Even the alphabet stamp set I have is a copy of font from the Stohlman book. Now I am being stubborn and learning the hard way by just trying new stuff.
  8. Thanks for the Info. This machine is super tempting. 1) I can afford it, 2) It is local, and 3) 5/16" is enough to sew guitar straps and most of the leather stuff I do now. However, I do have plans for some projects that are thicker, and this is a flat bed machine. I also like the aesthetics of thick thread.
  9. I am jealous as hell. Wish I had some BK tools. I use Tandy stuff, and as everyone knows, its not real great.
  10. http://tucson.craigslist.org/for/4532301313.html I always watch local ads for a possible good deal on a leather sewing machine, but to be quite honest, I know didly squat about sewing machines. This one came up for 400$ then relisted at 450$. Econosew MODEL 2060E8BLD Anyone knowledgeable of this machine? I am saving up for a Cowboy CB3200, but would prefer to snag a good deal locally. Thanks for looking.
  11. Made this for a friend. This is my first painted leather project other than just painting letters white or black. The strap is 5 oz veg tan, with a soft deer skin sandwiching some purple felt. The purple felt and the deer skin make the strap so soft and cushiony, it feels like neoprene but soft as a baby's bottom. I may be using this more often. and the presentation bag - I have to admit, I started making felt bags for my leather work because I thought it was a nice way to present my work, but I am continuing doing it because I really like making felt bags.
  12. Do you have to have a business account to order from Weaver? I tried a while back, and if I remember correctly, they didn't sell to the general public.
  13. Its beautiful tooling. I figured there was a story behind that buffalo.
  14. Everything looks straight and even. The CB3200 is on my list. I have started squirreling my leather money to buy one. I hate hand sewing guitar straps and portfolios.
  15. Thanks Rohn. I have been using cheap Tandy (on sale) leather for all my leather work, and as my tooling has improved, I am thinking about moving into higher quality leather.
  16. Beautiful work. I have a question. Do you make your bible covers to fit a specific bible, or are most bibles a pretty standard size? I have two good friends who recently had their first baby, and I would like to make them a bible cover for the occasion. I don't know whether to go buy some bibles, or just make a cover and let them pick out the bible they like for it.
  17. My friend is finishing up her Masters degree at the University of Arizona and was recently accepted to a Veterinary program at Kansas State. I made this for her She said elephants were the reason she decided she wanted to be a vet School logos - I am new to painting leather, but I am learning Inside I recently started making felt bags for all my leather work - I think it makes a classier presentation when someone opens up a felt bag instead of paper box or plastic bag. A picture of Emily from a trip we made out to the desert to go shooting last week.
  18. Really nice. I am ashamed of the carvings I posted after looking at some of the carvings on this site.
  19. That is awesome. Great 3-d effect.
