Mmmmmm! I love the smell of good pipe tobacco. Funny that I can't stand the smell of cigs or cigars, though. Can you make it so that a ziplock bag can be used as a liner? That way you can just toss the ziplock when it gets worn, or you change flavors?

Beautiful carving! You must have tons of experience doing this because it would probably take me at least 5 times that long to do one side. Seriously, one of those sides would take me at least 20 hours to get it finished with all that beveling. I guess I'd never be a good saddle maker.

I've never made a belt, and maybe I'm way off base but, what about a lined veg tanned belt with a hair on inlay? You could tool both ends, have it nicely lined, and still have the hair. Might be kinda thick, though?

No worries, Jordan, you're gonna love it. Once you get used to using it, you will never go back to your old method of cutting. Just always remember that a dull knife can slip easier than a sharp one, and always, ALWAYS keep the hand you are not cutting with BEHIND the knife. That way if your knife does slip, your hands are both behind the direction the blade is cutting.

Hi Marlon. It seems to be getting a little better each time I've done it. I can now get it sharp, but not wicked sharp yet. Now since I've ordered another head knife I'll be able to have twice as much fun. Maybe the next time will be best yet? I bought a book someone suggested called "The Razor Edge Book of Sharpening" by John Juranitch. It seems to have helped me in my sharpening chores. I have since quit using lubricant on my stone, and it seems to work much better without it. Just have to brush the stone off often to keep all the tiny metal flecks from building up and nicking the new edge. I have been able to sharpen my skiving knife pretty good. I now only sharpen for a right handed blade (since I'm right handed), and I've gotten it on the brink of being wicked sharp. I suppose practice makes perfect? Well, I have a lot of practicing to do, then!

They are available from many leather supply stores as well as booksellers and Amazon.com. Vol I and II cover things not covered in Vol III. I highly recommend getting them all if your budget permits. They are excellent books, and worth every penny! I would not part with mine. They often show more than one approach to the same end, so you'll probably find the info you're looking for somewhere in one of the Vols. Good luck, have fun, and please post pictures of your finished project.

Very nice, Cecil! They look delishious! I have a sudden craving for a nice ribeye and a spinach salad! I remember when Angus were not very popular due to having yellowish tallow. Now they're considered premium steaks due to the shortness of the muscle. Unless you get an ancient one, the meat is usually quite tender.

If you are looking for ideas on more way to line a box, you might check out the book "The Art of Making Leather Cases" Vol III by Al Stohlman. Although somewhat dated, this series of books are absolutely PACKED with useful information.

Another wonderful bird mask! That is soooo awesome! Pip, would you please stop? I really don't want to become a mask convert. I have too many other projects in mind without needing to put them all on hold to make one of these cool masks! Next time you make a mask like that could you make tabs on the upper part of the beak, then just bend them under to the inside, and fasten to the mask using screw posts? No glue, no sewing?
