Help with a large stiff hair on hide
Carrieanna1172 replied to Carrieanna1172's topic in How Do I Do That?
Here’s a pic idk if you all can see this very good but I cut pieces off of it and soaked one to just experiment it got a little softer for now until it dries I suppose but I think removing some of the flesh might be the only way to make it pliable ? Skiving ?I guess since I’m just gonna cut it up and use it I could slice the smaller pieces one a time as needed ? Hate to waste it It was all black I lightened it a bit in some spots with hair bleach -
A friend gave me a huge hair on hide he had in his garage it’s really thick fleshy and stiff and I need to know the best way to soften it? I don’t know how it was tanned or that makes a difference on treating, softening it but it has a bluish flesh color. any advice on it . I don’t want to lose the fur ? I thought about shaving some of the excess flesh from the back and using it for inlaying scabbards and such so I can cut it into smaller pieces but it’s way to stiff to use for anything now? any advice appreciated !

Yes Good idea I better use a test piece first I would hate to ruin them. The flap part of the bag will be opened and closed a lot so I don't want them too stiff the guys from Tandy told me to use just that snow proof stuff so I coated it with that before assembly. it's like a thick paste like substance maybe some oil and wax ( kind of greasy) I used a heat gun and it melts right in. gives it a great shine and feel I Really like it but I'm not sure it will give me the water resistance I want? And I don't want the top flap part to get stiff and crack?

I have a question about a tooltip that I saw on a YouTube video I'm going to attach the link if anybody wants to watch it It looks like it's maybe it's made of iron it reads in the description and the guy runs it around a saddle handle on a saddle to melt beeswax in the saddle handle I'm just wondering if anybody knows what this is or where to get it if it is it a soldering iron with the special tip or maybe he made it her something http://youtu.be/7u6ATWMi0Ns

Thanks for the responses ! some good places to start i do use rotary cutters as well on occasion. The way I hold the knife I depends on what kind I'm using I suppose when I use a utilitiy knife I palm it. I was thinking along the lines of a really good long lasting useful set something that keeps a good edge and doesn't need sharpened to frequently as I don't sharpen them .but I have a guy who sharpens them for me in exchange i have made him a couple leather belts for his sharpening machine something I could even hand down to someone years from now when I am no longer able to use them I will check out those dozier , bob beard and kipl Existing user? Posted 20 Sep 2012 · Report post Hello all! I'm new here, & brand new to leatherworking! :D I look forward to getting involved in what looks to be an amazing hobby. I had a question, & after scouring the internet & this forum, thought I would pose it to you fine people. I'm interested in making dog collars & harnesses, and Latigo seems, from my research, to be the most weather-resistant leather out there. I have four working-line dogs, & while we do not work them ourselves, the drive to be outside & be crazy is there That said, latigo seems to be the most fitting for my purpose. However, from what I understand, Latigo can not be tooled, nor stamped, nor carved. [ at least not easily, & it'll eventually lift / fade ] So, can a design be burned into Latigo? [ like with a wood-burning tool / soldering iron? ] Can it be branded? Also, can Latigo be grooved with a saddle's groover so that I have a nice spot to stitch? Thank you so much in advance if anyone is kind enough to take the time to answer these questions. Hopefully, one day, when I have experience I can contribute back! :D ~ Oakley Member Members 94 posts Gender:Male Location:Germany Posted 20 Sep 2012 (edited) · Report post Hello, i never tried to burn Latigo but i don't think that you get a nice look. Which gives Latigo a quite nice rustic touch is when you carve the uppest darker surface. [/ind

Very valid point Tugadude I have a call in to the principle to get her thoughts We will see? -
This may be a repeated topic but My 17 year old son wants to start making key fobs with his school / football team logo He would need to sell them to his teammates etc just to cover cost Could he get into trouble for this? I know the local screen printing shops sell sweatshirts with the team logo / school logo? It's a small school with a. Rey proud football team but do we have to get permission from Them? And who would we contact or ask about this?
