  1. thanks for all the comments. This was the first project that I have dyed, so it doesn't suprise me that I made some mistakes. The guy at Tandy sold me the leather balm, and I told him what I was going to be using it for. After I read the bottle at home, I was a little worried about what I was using it for. Any ideas on what I should be using as a top coat that will give me some water repellent?
  2. Actually, I didn't buff if prior to topcoat, didn't know i needed to. Is it too late to do that and recoat with the leather balm?
  3. I just finished a hoster dyed with Fiebings oil dye. I topcoated with Leather balm with atom wax(2 coats). Is this going to be enough to keep the dye from bleeding onto my pants? Or do I need to seal it with something else? I can't seem to get this stuff off my fingers, so it may not be a problem, but thought I would ask.
  4. thanks Jordan. That picture was kind of put me on this track in the first place. I am sure that someone smarter than me could have figured out another way to do this, but it turned out for the most part the way that I wanted. If I was ever going to sell something like this, I might put some effort into an easier way to do most of the stitching before I molded it. But for now I got it done and learned some more so I am happy. I am moving onto accesories before another holster design. Kudos from you guys means a lot, as I admire your work everytime you post it. Thanks.
  5. Dude your holsters are cool. Very clean looking. One question though, is the reinforcing strip and the belt loop one peice or are they seperate?
  6. Thanks Boomstick. The pattern started out as one that I already had. I used the pattern for the back piece as is. The front was a little tricky. I traced part of the back pattern and then added quite a bit to it where I figured I would need it. Then I molded just the front piece over the gun To just a rough shape and trimmed until I was happy with it. Then I glued and stitchched the two halves together. The I completed the final detail molding and added a stitch line on both sides of the gun. When I stitched it initially I kind of left it loose knowing that I would be adding stitching to tighten the fit. Also it has a retention strap so it didn't need to be as tight as it would have without. It feels realy good on. It rides high which I intended, I wanted it to conceal well. Which it does. Somehow I got the flaps at just the right angle to fit around my body curve. I have absolutlely no idea how that happened though. It just turned out that way. The one thing I noticed with this type of holster, is even without a reinforcing strip around the mouth, it doesn't want to collapse at all. I think if I did it again, I would add something to the thumb break to stiffen it.
  7. Well, I posted a question about how to do a pancake holster of the flat back variety and here is my attempt at it. I used a little different method than what Boomstik suggested, but it seemed to have worked out ok. The fit is nice and tight and for the most part I am pretty happy with it. It is finished with Fiebings Black Professional oil Dye and 2 coats of leather balm with atom wax. As with the previous holsters that I have made, there are a few things that I will do differently on the next one, but for s few as I have done, I am pretty happy with it. I just hope the dye doesn't bleed onto my pant the first time I wear it. This was all wet molded by hand, no press. The first photo is the front, the secondis the back and the third is the end profile from the muzzle end to show the flat back. NExt I am going to try a matching mag/cuff case.
  8. That is awesome. If you post a machine, could you also post what type of work you do with it. Just for those of us that know squat about machines.
  9. I bought a couple from the shooters Box and had no issues at all. Did they give you a tracking #? 2 weeks is a little long.
  10. that looks very nice Jordan. Just curious, what did you use as a template for doing your stitch grooving? That couldn't have been free hand was it?
  11. Man your holsters are beautiful. I keep trying but I have yet to make anything that nice.
  12. 7/8 for me too. I think anything heavier and you are going to lose some of the detail in the molding.
  13. Nice job. Ya it is very addicting. My wife asked me today as I was stitcher yet another holster, "How many of those do you need. And I said "one for every situation that I might carry in"She just closed the doorand went back in the house.
  14. Thanks guys. I'll do some looking
  15. Thanks Boomstick for all of your help. It never ceases to amaze me how helpful people are. You make some beautiful holsters. Thanks again.
  16. Thanks Boomstick this process is what I have been playing with in my mind. I am still having quite a time locating my stitch lines correctly prior to molding though. Thanks again.
  17. thanks for the replies. i am handstitching them now. I was just curious in case i get to a point in this journey that speed is of a little more concern.
  18. Seriously. Do you have to spend 1500-2000 to get a machine to stitch 8 oz leather. Is there any options for us po folk. I am sure this has been discussed at length prior to the crash, but I am very curious. I am mostly making holsters, with 8 maybe 9 oz.
  19. you sure can't tell by the looks of that holster. Of course my eye is not what you would call trained, but looks good to me.
  20. Nicely done. What machine are you using? I ask because I would like to get one, not because i know anything about them.
  21. I want to make a pancake holster with more of a flat back, but I a m struggling with how that might be done. If I stitch then mold, the two halves seem to come out protruding about the same on both sides. So, I think I am going to use a peice bigger than what I need, mold the top, then trim. My question is what would I use to trim the top of the holster that won't lay flat on my table. i don't really want to leave my mold in the holster, and mark it all up. Is there something that would work for this. I thought about shears, but I will need to get some better than what I have been using. Just something that has been bothering me. I am going to try this for my glock 23 w/ light attached as there are not leather options for guns with lights. I am also going to incorporate some kydex to this one as a stiffener. I am not sure to what extent but somehow kydex will be in it.
  22. I don't know squat about tooling, but I really like the way it looks. Very nice.
