Thanks - that makes it very clear. -
Thanks for the reply Keith.

I am looking for someone to make a buckle like this one - I would like it cast in Sterling as well as Brass. Not sure where to even start looking. Thanks, John

Yes, I am hand stitching this project. If I cut the holes at an angle, will the stitches be angled or will they still be straight? I would prefer a straight stitch for this project. Thanks for the tips.

I looked on Youtube, and I couldn't be more unimpressed with what I saw in regards to hand stitching leather. I could have done a better job and I use a machine 99% of the time. I am trying to stitch a 90 deg corner for a box, but the side where the awl exits looks terrible (even though the awl exits where I have marked the leather with a stitch wheel). Are there any good videos to be had on the net that would give me a little more instruction on hand stitching (and not have it look like it was done by a 4 year old)? Thanks

I will. I would guess it was in NE Washington, as that is where I met him, and his mom lived in the Spokane area.

True - I would have to be certain to get enough out of them to step up though. I will have to make a list of what I have an see how much $$$ there is in them.

Unfortunately, he has passed away, and all my friend knew about them was where to find the box in the garage. I am actually using the tools, so I will make sure they go to a good home when I pass on!

A bit off topic, but can you tell me if all RBS Tools are Vintage or if there was a modern manufacturer for them too? I acquired a bunch of RBS tools from a friend (they were his grandfather's). All were well taken care of, and appear to be almost new. Some of the tools are definitely not as high of quality as the others (the detail on the tool face is less than perfect), but that could just be a few bad examples of what came out of the shop. Thanks.

I have 6 spools about a pound each. Will sell full spools only at $16/lb plus shipping. I will weigh each spool and charge accordingly.

It would be cheaper to just order direct from Horween - that is the Tannery where all the suppliers are getting it from. And as for the horse having to die for the hide...well so does a cow...and the raw hide comes from Europe (mostly Belgium IIRC) where horse is cattle and served on a plate.

all of my recent tools are marked with the size.

I just bought a Randall #2, 18" Splitter, and I am having a bit of trouble with the darn thing (I did watch it work prior to purchasing). I am using a really firm leather - 8 oz. plated Veg. Tan. I can have the feed rollers no more than 1/16th inch appart, and when I feed the piece through, it doesn't shave off a bit (can't even hear the blade scuffing the back side). If I crank it down just a bit further, it will start the cut and shave off an ounce or two, but by the time the piece comes out the end of it is paper thin. Do I have a blade adjustment issue, blade is too dull, feed roller pressure??? I don't want to fiddle with it until I have a good idea of what it might be. Thanks, John

The needle could very well be the difference - the relief on the side of the needle is where the shuttle hook picks up the thread, so the wrong needle would cause issues.
-
4 cord is Size 277 thread. As for the needle, 16X2 is the STYLE of needle. You will probably need a size 25 with that heavy of thread. Here is the manual for your machine.... 17-23 Manual

Interesting - I use nylon for my holsters, but hear lots of Internet Experts who talk about the superiority of Poly. Good info!

I am checking into what the above suppliers have to offer, but I would definitley be interested in other sources of Cast Brass Buckles as well. Thanks, John
-
Thanks! I will look into them. I don't have a problem with having to meet minimums - I might get many years of buckles, but that is fine with me.

Anyone know of a supplier who makes cast brass buckles here in the US? I don't want stamped, as I think they look a bit cheap. Looking for a standard heel bar buckle like this, and right now, price is no biggie. Belt Buckle

I would think bonded polyester would hold up in heavier wieghts, but kevlar would surely be better. The down side (beyond what is mentioned above) is that Kevlar will destroy your machine eventually. It will act like a little hacksaw blade and cut into everything it rubs against. If you only use a bit, might take forever to happen though. The same issue applies to fishing line of the same design. It takes special guides on the rod to keep the line from cutting through when the big brute peels off a bunch of line.
