I had a coworker give me a buckskin side and all he wants in return is a pair of gloves or something made from the leather. I've found some instruction on a pattern and making gloves but most of them are using machines to stitch which I don't have. I am going to hand stitch a pair of them for him, but I have one glove cut out for practice. Yowza, what is the best way to mark the spacing for my stitching? It seems tougher than veg tanned leather to penetrate with my diamond awl, or maybe just because it is softer.

Are you in the Pacific NorthWest? I had never heard of these until I moved to Rainier, Oregon! They are everywhere up here. Cool looking item. BTW, welcome to the forum! I see that is your first post!

Thanks Mike and Chief! I was wondering about the 5 inch thing... I am on such a limited budget right now that a real splitter seems so far away!!!

Has anyone tried making a home made splitter using a wood plane knife? I've seen some on youtube but most of them are small like a razor blade wide. I would like one that would do 4 or 5 inch wide leather.

Introduction And A Question About A Little Tool Problem
terrypen replied to BuckeyeGuy's topic in Member Gallery
What everyone else said! On a budget, I would/did buy the Finesse stitching chisels from Springfield Leather. I still had to polish them up a bit but I am happy with them and they are inexpensive. Not the same quality as the high dollar ones but they work and have improved my stitching tremendously. I would also buy some Tiger thread, it is tons better than the stuff Tandy sells. Hope this helps! -
Introduction And A Question About A Little Tool Problem

Hey welcome to the club!!! I know what you mean about about the fixed income and these tools will nickel and dime ya to death!!! Assuming you are talking about a diamond awl, then what Tugadude said is probably correct.... I had to polish my C.S. Osborne diamond awl quite a bit, now I have to be careful that I don't go too far through the leather. I would think Tandy would replace it if it's not too old or beat up. Good luck -
I am in no way volunteering... as I just never have time to read all the posts on here as it is... BUT, even if there was a pin somewhere that was one post that had some links to great articles already on the forum. IE: Bob Park's casing and edges, links to Nigel's youtube channel and/or individual saddlestitch video... etc... It would be a huge help to us newbies... Maybe just broken down into newbie categories.. Starter Kits vs. ala carte Vendors (Just links to some) that could probably be it's own page due to everyone selling different items.

Yeah, I was thinking that I could probably figure out the sides and the handles and even the clasp... It's the gusset that I can't wrap my mind around.. In the picture on their May 2015 flyer, it looks like the blue one is just a flat panel gusset... but I can't imagine that would work very well... I very well could be wrong in all my newbiness! Thanks

Or better yet... just build yourself a saddle custom fit for it...

My wife keeps eyeballing this Tandy kit for the Francesca Handbag Kit. I can't seem to find a similar pattern on here, does anyone know if there is a similar pattern? Thanks,

Thanks! I guess I need to update these pics. I sanded down the jaws a bit and then added leather. I still haven't stained and varnished it yet... Post those pics of that horse, I like seeing the items people use to make their leather life easier!

I actually did dilute and try on another item and was able to just use water on a rag to wipe the streaks off of the piece and blend them in. Big sigh of relief... I will definitely be doing some more practice using different methods... Thanks, Terry
-
Thanks rawcustom! Not that I don't value raw's input, I would just like to get input from several different methods that I could try before I screw up my piece! Anyone else care to comment?

I agree... thanks to all that commented!!!

I left a message on the forum in the dyes, finishes thread but didn't get an answer yet.... Sorry for the re-post but this is for a wallet/money clip that I need to be done with because it is sold... I have been using Resolene and decided to try Tan-Kote... I tested this on piece of scrap but I guess my scrap was too small to see streaks in the Tan-Kote. I have managed to go back over the piece with just a damp wool swab, so now I have kind of a satin sheen to it but I want it to be shiny or at least more shiny. How do you apply Tan-Kote without it being streaky? Can I dilute it with water like Resolene? HELP! Please! Terry
-
I just found this thread because... well I have not been doing my pieces anything like this... I have been dying with Angelus Dk Brown leather dye and then buffing and then using Tan-Kote or Resolene. Tan-Kote seems to be very streaky after one coat, will it get better with the second? Should I dilute it?

Doh... I had been searching for medicine balls... Tandy calls them a medicine pouch... http://www.tandyleather.com/en-usd/search/searchresults/4635-01.aspx

Anyone have a pattern for a medicine ball? A native american style made with deer leather? BTW: a co-worker gave me a deer hide of about 12sq ft, all he wants in return is a couple pairs of gloves and a native american pouch (like a money bag)

Send me some homemade gumbo and maybe some crawfish and I'll give you my answer!!! I was stationed at Ft Polk for 5 years... I do miss some good Cajun food!!! BTW.. you've only scraped the top off of this money pit you are opening!!! Although you can do some stuff cheap, you do need to spend some cash on tools and leather to keep improving...

That is 30° is from a horizontal postion. 30° angle on each side of the blade equals 60° Not sure exactly what the degrees should be on the swivel knife. BTW... the Keen Edge is at Tandy and SLC..

We are still old school up here in podunk county Oregon... OK Columbia county... but still old school... I do want to get a trunk-tracking scanner.. but need more leather first. I'm one of those no-code extras.... I want to learn it but never make the time to do it... 73, must get to bed... haha

I lived in Mesa and then Queen Creek, between 1996 and 2010. I also lived in Sierra Vista when I was at Ft Huachuca but that was 93-94 or so... I listen to police freq's more than anything... I have an Icom 7000 in the vehicle that is really a police scanner... haha

You too! Did you used to live in Phx? I used to live in Queen Creek, stone's throw from TuckSon... I'm not extremely active, never have enough money for stuff... So what do I do? Get into leatherwork... geez this might be a bigger money pit than Ham Radio... haha One of these days I'll be able to find full time employment so I can pay for some stuff!!!
