IWB Holster Question
dickf replied to tazzmann's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I say no liner and dip dye the holster black, followed up by an acrylic topcoat (resolene, Angelus acrylic, etc). -
New to holster making

I also think $8.50 is too high. Tandy can get you squared away with some practice material for about $4 / sq ft. I think. I also second talking to Kevin. I bought some leather from him recently and will be using him exclusively from now on. -

The jdlawhon site is a great link - he lists most of the tools you'll need, although some can be substituted and/or omitted altogether. That tutorial is specifically at this link: http://www.jdlawhon.com/beltslide.html But, there's a lot of things about this that are all about preference. For concealment type holsters, anywhere from 7-10oz is typical for pancakes while 6-7oz is used for iwb styles. I personally feel that 7-8oz is a perfect balance for me to create both styles, and I have come to that conclusion by trying weights higher and lower than that. Your mileage may vary. I suggest hitting up your local Tandy and scoring a 7-8oz shoulder to play with. Nothing fancy, if it's on sale, snag it - I'd wager you won't spend more than $30 on leather. Work with it and see what you think. Follow the tutorials you've read and search this forum for even more. Be sure to post when you're done - I'm sure you'll get all the friendly comments and crtiques you need. You've already found the best resource on the web for this, though. Oh yeah, and WELCOME!!! -

It sounds like you don't have Javascript enabled. To do this in Firefox, : "Tools -> Options -> Content -> Enable JavaScript". You may need to restart Firefox to see the changes (if any).
-
What happens if you kill the process in Task Mgr and restart Firefox? You could have a corrupt profile file, which is no biggie.

Thanks for the nice words, guys. Yes, I did run a groove so I knew where to go. The outside row is freehand, though.

I just started using my new machine (Model 5) and think I'm making pretty decent progress. I haven't posted here with photos for awhile, so I decided it was time. Specs - 7-8 oz black/black for Polish P64 (9x18) As usual, comments/critiques welcome.

Was this a dip-dye?

That's a great color - mind sharing how you achieved it?

New Holster Finished

Looks great - stitch lines look well executed. Also, that color is great. Did you airbrush, dip, or dauber it on? -
My pleasure, Leatherlady!

Hi guys - looks like the speed issue is improving, which is great. I really dig the lightbox for the images - sure beats new windows. Also looks like the search errors got worked out. I do have one suggestion... The last version had a feature where you could rollover a thread, and a few lines from the most recent post would display in a tooltip. I miss that. Anyway, if there's anything I can do to help, just let me know!

You'll enjoy the IS - it makes a world of difference when you don't have a tripod. Canon makes quality gear.

They're really very sloppy in comparison. The witness lines are very evident, and as Jeff said, the material is much softer. I dunno, the 1 I have here is rough but dimensionally accurate (It's a P2000). I wouldn't go the ASP route if I didn't have to, but they have things that Ring's does not.

First Leather holster
dickf replied to XDholster's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks - yeah I attached some Kydex clips and have alternate leather loops for it. The holster is no longer in my possesion, though! Good luck with this - I'm interested to see the results! -
I've used an ASP mold for an H&K before, and while it did the trick, it's clear that the edges are sharper and the overall detail is rough compared to Rings. Still, the gun clicked into place, so in my specimen it didn't seem off dimensionally.

Me too. -
I tried a chisel months ago and it seems to work okay. I just clean up the interior of the slot with a sander on a Dremel.

TwinOaks, You should be able to use the headset you want with your computer. As long as you have the headset protocol installed in your Bluetooth stack. For more info, read this article: http://oreilly.com/windows/archive/bluetooth.html I should also note that 'video' chat sort of requires you to sit in front of your laptop, thus you're tethered to it anyway. I have a headset with mic that has a ridiculously long cord (something like 8 ft.), and it works and sounds good. They're made by Altec Lansing. As an alternative to video chat (that is, if you just want to use the audio portion of it), you should look into Skype (which also has video capability): http://www.skype.com/ Hollar if you need help setting things up.
