Thanks, Randy, you made alot of good points. The short notice is kinda my fault, cause I agreed to it for the simple reason, I know why he wants it then and it can get me lots of work. He is going on a 100 mile trail ride, with us, and about 500 other folks. He knows alot more of them than I do, he has been going every year since 1979. I'll discuss it with him when he comes in monday, but I WON'T do the Billy Cook. Thanks again, Rus

Well......... now the problem isn't fitting the name, he came in this morning and wants me to put his name on a Billy Cook breastcollar, that his dad has, and that matches the saddle. He left before I had a chance to tell him the problem with doing that. I think it'll just be cheaper for him to have me make him one. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's easier to incorporate the tooling into the name, than the other way around. If it was me, I would keep the Billy Cook original, and have one made that has the 'bells & wistles' I want.

I have a customer wanting a breastcollar made, and wants his name on it. The problem I'm having is his first name has 4 letters and his last name has 7 letters. The only thing I can see to do is, either put his first AND last name on both sides, or space his first name out to take up more room. I need some ideas, what would you guys do?? I have to have it made in 5 days. Thanks, Rus

WOW,thats really nice!! Now you have to make some chaps with a full butt, so you can protect the seat of your pants. One thing about it, that seat will last longer than the bike.

I have one of the old cast iron Boss' and it works just great for me, it took some getting used to on the stitches and tention. I've used Adlers and a Toro 3000, but I'm not good enough to work that fast, so 1 stitch at a time is perfect for me. I paid $800 for mine just last year, and all it came with was the video, and book on how to use it, and the accessories box that come with it new. Over all I am very happy with it. Someday I'll upgrade to electric, til then it's the one arm bandit.

Thanks, Bob, and Randy, I will try your ideas. I did try to copy a piece similar but I think I had the copier on the wrong setting, cause it was too dark to make out. I think I had it on black and white, instead of color.

Thanks Kevin & Pete, I tried that, but didn't get much, I will try some lighter paper, or maybe find a leaf pattern thats pretty close and just work from there.

Thanks everyone for your input, I will try the sugestions for sure, if it wasn't for leatherworker, I would be TOTALY on my own for learning this stuff.

I came across the very first tooling I did at a Tandy workshop in August 2006, and thought I'd see if anyone else had some Item that they look back at and just shake their head. Keep in mind this was 6 days after a kidney transplant and I was still on some GOOD pain killers. I did the "better" one a couple months ago. Feel free to post pics!

I am going to try and restore a Bona Allen Saddle, and I have to recreate some of the tooling on the rear jockys and the stirrup fenders, and was wondering if someone has this pattern in a line drawing or can help me with the computer end of doing it. I know nothing about computer stuff, so I don't know where to start. I'm sure some of you saddle makers have something similar stashed away, it don't have to be exact, but the pattern is on the seat jockys so the closer the better. Thanks in advance, Rus

coldmaker0, thats pretty much what I started doing 3 yrs ago, the first stamps i got was Tandy's barb wire set, and a basketweave. Also thanks for the input!!

Maybe it's just me......but that purse looks kinda like a mailbox. It looks like it would last a lifetime, and the woman can't overfill it! Thats a good idea.

Sooooo??? Is it good or bad to not get feedback on a post?? I know someone has to have some input on this tooling. I did this one about 6 months ago. I either need an ego boost or a realty check.

I don't know what Herman Oak uses, but I use leather balm with atom wax. -
As long as nobody gets hurt (unless thats the general idea) I don't see what the problem is. Money is money, and if it is a strange request then it must be paid in advance since it is a custom order. It's like my dad used used to tell the guys on his work crew " they are going to pay someone to do this job, it might as well be us". With times the way they are, I say get whatever job you can. Just my .02

VERY DRY SADDLE
rustyriggin replied to chevygirl's topic in Saddle Identification, Restoration & Repair
I would suggest a GOOD cleaning with some Leather New, and then several light coats with 100% neatsfoot oil over many days until it gets where you want it. Just my .02. Rus -
