Treed replied to Josh Ashman's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
nice job.....tooling look great -
yes

I didn't use a resist.... started with the center color and worked out with paint brush and then worked in with the black on a paint brush......using multi coats to blend the colors together.

Another Order the went out..... Herman Oak tooled.... Customer wanted it in black. Black washes out the tooling so I added a little extra color to the flower centers to make them pop

Been awhile, with orders, rodeos, and life don't have much time to set down at this computer anymore. Order was for a Mexican loop holster and traditional money belt with 45 LC loops, made it out of 4-5 oz leather. The holster and knife sheath are out of Herman oak 8-9

Tactical Leather Rig
Treed replied to Treed's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I haven't gotten around to building a holster for the light....still old school and use a hand held light... There was no dye used.... natural leather with good dip of neastfoots oil and some natural sun light. -
Started looking for something to carry 1911, mags and AR 15 mags. Everything I found was for a full tactical loadout. I am not on the SWAT team anymore so I wanted something simple and usable, easy to put on in the night for defense or to go to the range with. Something easy to mount 2 to 4 mags [28 to 36 rounds] for the 1911 and 1 or 2 AR mags [60 to 90 rounds]. This is the rig that I came up with, Herman Oak leather 10 oz and fully lined. Holster is drop with thump break, drop has some flexibility but will retain its shape with molded kydex insert. All mag pouches are wet molded to the magazines.

Holster, Mag Pouch And Belt
Treed replied to Josh Ashman's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Great looking rig, love the color..... haven't been around for awhile and trying to get caught up. See I am going to have to step up my game when I get back into the shop -
a curved belt will be more comfortable and will ride lower on the hips with out dropping off the hips. The straight will ride higher on the waist above the hips. One of the biggest aspects to curved vs straight is the amount of wastage that will come from making curved belts. Women benefit more from the curved belt because of body build.

The one thing that has not been mentioned is the dies. If you are starting out and buying everything then the gold star might be the way to go. The problem with the Gold Star is that you have to use their dies with the press. The top dies are a screw in die where every one else use a straight shank die with a set screw. Where I had some Tandy dies already this press would not work.

Go to Knife Kits dot com http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/product_info.php?cPath=41_526&products_id=634. This is an arbor press that has been set up for snaps, eye lets and rivets. The press is nice as it will use less force than an arm press so easier to use when setting a large number of items as in spots. It is already drilled out to accept their dies or can be used with any standard Tandy die. Their dies are a lot cheaper than Tandy's. I just up graded to this press an love it for large jobs and small

I would say that the color ones are an acrylic paint, very common in western belts. The next one is just a one color dye and the last two are a dye and antique paste.

Thanks everyone... it was fun coming up with new designs and a product that would hold up to the rigors of the outdoors.

Here are some knife sheaths I have just finished for orders and some sportsman shows that are coming up First one is for a smaller knife but is modular for different configurations. It can be worn on a bag or pack, traditional belt vertical carry high or low dangling, or in a horizonal scout carry Second pictures is of two Schrade knifes in vertical belt carry with pouches for Gerber and Leatherman multi tools. The first knife sheath has fire steel and been constructed so that the rear belt area is silted so that it can be hanged from the mollie system of a pack This is a sheath that also can be hung from a pack or the belt for a Gerber knife, multi tool and fire steel Last sheath is for a custom made knife belt carry low dangling or high ride on the belt.... Addition of a leather thong it could be worn around the neck

Funny how things materialize and progress. Most of the holster makers concentrate on concealment or competition western styles. I started getting orders from hunters and outdoors-men to fill there need for revolvers and rifle items. This has led to orders for bags and knife items to full the needs of bushcrafters, hikers and hunters. Here are a few items that i have finished an are shipping. Bags are oil tan 5 oz with veg tan or oil tan for straps and trim. The first bag has all removable straps so that it is modular and can be used in different configurations. The straps are long enough to allow a coat, tarp, or blanket to be carried under the flap or on the bottom of the bag The second bag has shoulder straps attached to back of bag with holder for hatchet or small axe. Side gusset had snap for hanging items and pouch for large fire steel Third bag smaller version of the first bag with knife sheath and saw attachments. Both attachments can be removed by undoing the shoulder strap and moving them to the belt if desired. Last customer wanted a way to carry there bottle canteen on a saddle. The kit came with a cup and stove and cup lid that all nested together. Made of 10 oz veg tan.

It somewhat looks like the resist isn't doing the job... It allowed the paste to get in an dye the leather instead of going into the cracks and cuts and laying there. The stamping looks fine.
