  1. You know guys....you might be right!! Well maybe. It's been so long since he's tied his foot, I don't remember which foot to tie. He, of course, is of the era of tying dummies. If I remember right, when he used to tie his foot for goat tying practice, he tied lefty. If that's the case, he's SOL. The more I think about it, tying lefty is right. Would be hard to string righty and then try to tie. Guess he's gonna hafta do the Gary Leffew deal and visualize alot of great runs.
  2. Thanks Jbird, Richard........I appreciate the compliments. Jbird, how long did you crash your knee? How was your recovery? Richard...who won the roping?
  3. Although this isn't about the stool.........well it kinda is........the first day of rehab was good. They thought he was doing remarkably well two days after surgery. And, the stool will be the ideal height. I thought it was a bit low, and truth be known, the next one will be higher, but for what my son needs it's perfect!!!
  4. Thanks for the kind words. I was pretty happy with the way it turned out. As for the surgery, the doc was happy. Tomorrow we start the PT and rehab. He's a tough kid, mentally and physically. He'll be back.
  5. Here's the first three legged stool. Thanks to UK Ray for the tri-bolts. I shold have drilled the holes further down the legs, but oh well. It's really a stool I didn't want to build. It's for my son who is a high school calf roper. He was winning a ton this season, and ready to go to the High School National Finals. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in the practice pen, and yesterday he had surgery. The doctors say it will probably be mid November or early December before he can rope calves again. Oh well.....occupational hazard. He's only a sophomore, so he'll still make it. But it does suck for him. Anyway, let me know what you think of the stool.
  6. I've made several bronc halters as awards, and some for my kids personal use. I always use a 4-5 oz. chap leather as a liner. That way it covers the ends of any bling spots and it provides a sweat picker-upper too. Just my 2 cents.
  7. I met this guy at the NFR this year. He had a booth at one of the Cowboy Christmas's. I told him about our little home. I'll promise ya'll this, seeing his work in person is mind blowing. Undoubtedly, he's one of the best toolers I've ever run across. And, he's a very personable young man.
  8. I got a funny forward the other day about the swine flu deal. A couple old rancher's in TX were in the local coffee shop, and one commented that the US would have a black president when pigs fly. The other ol' cowboy says "Well, it's been 100 days, and guess what?.....Swine Flu"
  9. Go2, Oh yea....I've heard that song a few thousand times. But, there probably ain't a rent-a-cop at a leather show that anyone would have to sock in the eye to get past. And, chances are, nobody would turn out your piece of tooling leather at a demonstration!! Again, I say FLOOR IT!!!
  10. Ahh, but if you rent a car at Billings airport, it will have Montana plates...........FLOOR IT!!!
  11. JOhanna, Try Billings, MT. That's probably the closest, biggest airport. Casper might be an option too, but probably pretty spendy. Billings will be spendy too I'd imagine. Denver will be cheapest, but it's about 7-8 hours away. Hope this helps.
  12. Have a look. These are the first pair of spur straps I've made. I know the one spot of hair on is actually hair off, but these were just kinda practice anyway. I'm sure there will be alot more hair worn off with use. I had planned to make a sheridan style pair, but found that I'm not quite to the level it takes to tool in such a small space. Anyway, let me know what you think.
  13. Ray, Where do you get the bolts for the legs?
  14. LOL.........that's the point. I think she considers everything on the planet her domain...including my leather shop. Not to mention my nightstand, my side of the closet, my boots, me in general.........LOL. It's kind of a no win situation...LOL. I have considered locking MYSELF in my shop.
  15. Ya'll make some good points about keeping CUSTOMERS from touching tools, but what about wives?!!.....LOL. My dear bride insists on coming into my leather shop area, which is a separate little building attached to the garage. She is always "organizing" my tools and things for me. Drives me freakin' crazy. Oh and she insists on turning the small space heater way down. I go into the leather shop ready to start a project, and I can see my breath!! I've explained that the dyes and finishes and glues don't work real well when frozen, but she still turns the heat down. I've hidden the keys to the shop from her, but that turns into a whole new war!!! Anyway, just thought I'd throw my dilema into the mix. Any suggestions on keeping wives out of the shop and away from the tools would be greatly appreciated........LOL!!
  16. I'm not nearly as technologically advanced as some of you.....I use Diamond kitchen matches.
  17. Patric..........no manuals at all with it, however the guy did have an envelope with probably a dozen or so needles..... Steve........yes it has the original roller foot. I would probably rather have a flat foot, but have no idea where to find one. Any insight there would be helpful.
  18. Hey all.......I think I just scored a big one. I bought a Singer 45K25 for $250. I went to check it out, and it seems like it sews fine. I can't wait to get it home and start playing with my new toy. I'll post some pics when I get it home.
  19. Hilly....don't be skeered..........LOL...........
  20. I hope this post didn't offend anyone. The idea of tanning a human just reminded me of a these lyrics from a song a bronc rider friend of mine wrote. I still don't think it's a bad idea........lol.........
  21. I don't think it's at all weird. I've always wanted to be tanned and made into a fancy barrel racing saddle so I could spend eternity between the two things I love the most..........
  22. Thanks ATX. I really think that by being forced to wait between steps may have helped. This was the first time I had set something out in the sun for a day too. Anyway, glad you like it.
  23. ATX, The finish is a basic Sheridan finish. Here are the steps I did on this one. 1. Tool 2. Dye edges and background 3. Light coat of Neatsfoot (Let dry in the sun for a day) 4. Neatlac (fairly heavy coat, let dry for a day) 5. Antique (let dry for a day) 6. Tan Kote My schedule actually fit this project very well. I had other stuff going on, so I could only do a little bit and then let it sit for a day or say. I think that actually worked to my benefit. I'm glad you like it.
