  1. If I understand the problem correctly, you are willing to stitch through the liner, but you are concerned with the lack of access within the tube.

When I encountered this problem before, I cut my needles to length (left the eyes), filed the tips to get rid of the rough edges, then used needle nose pliers to manipulate the needles where my fingers could not reach. It was slow and tedious, but it worked.

  2. I  just finished a belt last weekend. What I did was to cut the belt, tape the back, stamp, dye, resist, antique, and resist. At this point, I removed the tape, glued on the back of the belt, and finally stitched the two together.

I now have a belt with a nice looking outside, while the inside has no dye and no chance of staining my pants.

Well, I believe I have the stitching now going in the correct direction.  Not the prettiest, but the right direction...I hope.  When I say left versus right, it was the side in the stitching pony, diamonds facing away and up from me.  I started stitching away from me and stitched towards my body.  Am I reading the directly correctly now?  They go up on the right side and down on the left side.

That is a big improvement in a short time.

  4. While talk of chisels and threads is fun, it is not applicable to the OP's question. He needs to develop his stitching technique and his current thread and chisel set is just fine for that. Once he develops some skill, I am sure he will also develop a sense as to what type of stitching appeals to him whether it be long or short stitches, diamond, French, or round chisels, plastic or linen thread.

Hehe I can relate, I make bags for my daughters all the time and when it comes to picking colours, OMG talk about fussy

For each project I must create a set of sample stiches as above; just laying the thread across the leather is not enough. However, she almost always picks the black thread.

  6. You are doing something backwards. If you notice, your thread is going from the top corner of the right hole to the bottom corner of the left hole while it should be the opposite.

In other words, your holes are like: / / / /  (correct)
but your thread is like: / / /
while the thread should be like \ \ \

As an example, here is a sample card I made for my daughter so she can pick the thread color for her new bag.

I suggest you watch more YouTube videos to see how it is done. I had to watch several before it finally clicked.

Also, as tsunkasapa pointed out, the most important factor is to be consistent. The needles must pass in the same orientation each time and must be pulled at the same angle and tension for each stitch.

  7. I watched the video to understand your problem. Aaron uses a plastic coil zipper that does not have the directional teeth of the metal zipper. That is why his works.

You can use the metal zipper by using two halves with the teeth in the same direction.  Where the two halves meet could be hidden under the D-ring holder that Aaron shows on a second case at the end of his video.

However, as the design of this case allows the pistol to come in contact with the zipper (repeatedly as it bounces around), you would be better off using the plastic coil that won't scratch.

  8. Your second picture shows two problems. The zipper on the right shows the problem that Rocky Aussie pointed out. On the left side the bumps go up while on the right side, the bumps go down.

The left zipper shows a different problem. While the bumps on both sides go the same direction, they are backwards with respect to the slider. When holding the slider with the closed side down and the open side up (as shown), the bumps on the chain should be facing up.

Back to the book: I tried to watch Nigel's saddle stitch video, but as he works with the awl in the left hand and considers the left side the front, his instructions are the opposite of Stohlman's. Or are they? Trying to figure it out made my head spin!

So, question to the people who have read the book: Are the instructions in there for left-handers as well, or is the front on the right?

if you watch this video and skip to 11:32 Mr. Armitage shows how to stitch right handed.

I live in California, we cannot get anything but water based, acrylic dyes. Forget about the antiquing paste. Even Tan Kate smears water based dye.
I just got some Fielding low-voc dye, first impressions were not great either, very blotchy but at least they will not run.
Considering smuggling some real chemicals but I’m too good looking for jail. I could smoke a legal joint but can’t use real dye.

I live in California and use Angelus dyes which are alcohol based just like Fiebing's.
