  1. So that means that you can buy some of Barrys tools cheaper if you dont go through Barry? Seems goofy but I thought that I heard that he made them just wasnt sure. Thanks for the info.
  2. Wow I guess that this is not a popular tool? Nobody owns one eh? or are they that bad or that good that there is no coment needed?
  3. dont make me drive up there and trim on a cinch Hows the farmin goin?
  4. I would get as thick of a peice of granite as you can up to about 3 to four inch. I to started with a peice of one inch and after a long day of basket stamping it broke. I have since (about three years ago or more) upgraded to a peice of 3" smooth concrete and had zero problems and it works great.
  5. well thanks to the greats for answering. The Feebay ad said he used them for leather work, but I couldnt figure out how either. I knew that they were for silver and metal work so I am glad to hear that I am not totally dumb and missing the boat on using these.
  6. Has anyone used the weaver swivel knives or blades? They look alot like Barrys but a little cheaper.
  7. Do any of you greats use dapping punches? and if you do what place would you use them? I have seen the same guy selling them on ebay for a while but I cant figure out where I would ever use one.
  8. I just checked around the other day Jed. Weaver was the cheapest I found that would ship on short notice. 130.00 and shipped that day got it the next.
  9. You will want to use a nice peice of granite or marble for a stamping stone. i use that material for a cutting surface however
  10. I am just curioius who you guys buy your herman oak from I only need one or two sides. I looked through weavers catalog and they seeem like they are a little proud but I might be wrong. If you could let me know who your favorite vendors are that would be great. Thanks Tim
  11. Herman oak and or Wickett & Craig
  12. Thanks a bunch
  13. how do I find a copy of this "shop talk" or how do I subscribe or even find the elusive magazine?
  14. Hey I dont know if this is the correct place to post this or not but I will try it here first. Are there any other magazine type publications to subscribe to? I have heard of one called shop talk maybe? any how I like the LCSJ but I would be interested in more if there are any. I am always looking to learn and there have been a few of the LCSJ that didnt have much that I was interested in but overall I find at least one little tidbit in all of them. So if anyone has any ideas of where to look I sure would be interested.
  15. well at least your honest.LOL
  16. Well thanks for the input all. I think I decided on the set of checkered bevelers, I think this will give me the biggest notice of change and since I am an instant gratification type of guy I will start with these
  17. I have a stohlman knife that I have modified to make it a SPINNER. granted not the best knive on the market but WWWWAAAAAYYYYY better than a standard Tandy. You can get them apart and do a little mod to get them tighter and smooter at the same time. Sorry I got off track a little, but thanks for the info that is what I am leaning towards as well. I jsut wasnt sure if the thumbprints and what not are the frist things to buy, I have it stuck in my head that I will see the most dramatic difference with bevelers. But to all feel free to tell me otherwise, I wouldnt be here if I knew what I wanted or needed for sure.
  18. So I just got one hundred dollars to spend with Barry King for my birthday. I am thinking about getting the set of checkered bevelers but I want to hear some other opinions. Keep in mind that they are gift certificates for Barry. The only real quality stamps that I have now are a Basket stamp from Barry as well as a Basket from Hackbarth. Granted I have some quality mauls and head knives and I guess a few other various hand me downs and some random finds here and there but I have all craptool I mean crafttool stamps. I mainly attempt to do my version of sheridan carving (not real well but I try) So the main question is if you had 100.00 bones to spend with barry and wanted to stay just with stamps what would be your first and most important buys. Thanks for any and all input. Tim
  19. That puts it pretty clear to me.
  20. I too have seen that and had to laugh a little. I am by no means an expert at any of this but I personally think that a saddle builder who claims to be as good as that should at least know how to use the "proper" tools for the job. To me that is like a mechanic saying "well I know how to use that torque wrench but I prefer to use this pipe wrench and pair of pliers instead" Just doesnt seem real credible to me. Use a round knife.
  21. well shoot if thats all it takes to do a tutorial then I should qualify I guess.
  22. I dont care for any of the ecoflow stuff. I use the feibings antique paste with a coat of tankote (or neetlac if you can find any) with the paste you will want to use a blocker of some kind again neet lac or I have resorted to Saddle lac but no where near as good as the neet lac. I only use the gum trag on edges and I have never used the carnuba cream so i am not much help there. I hope this is a little bit of help and I feel your pain in the frustration department as this is common in the early stages.
  23. No one chattin tonight?
  24. That still doesnt help with the layout though
  25. Man I need to learn to carve better. Those are beautiful, I have no use for taps up here where I live but I would be dang proud to own those. Great Work.
