  1. they look good but wow thats alot of lacing. Congratulations
  2. Ok now I understand what you are saying. my decorative cuts got way out of hand on this one for sure. I dont know if I do them right or wrong, this forum is the most "training" I have ever had. I too like it when people tell me what to do or not to do i just sometimes dont understand what you are trying to tell me, as again I am pretty much self taught with guidance here and there(mainly here) I thank you all for any info that you have or will give me in the future. Tim
  3. I like it. one question though you mentioned that I needed a thumbprint to make my flowers look less flat, no offense but I feel like yours look just a little bit flat as well I dont totally understand. Dont get me wrong I think that it looks fantastic and a heck of alot better than I can do I jsut dont totally get what you are trying to tell me. gotta remember I am just a cowboy that got hit in the head a few to many times. Tim
  4. No I agree with almost everything that you have said. you are 100 percent correct about the shader and the cuts I got way out of control. I dont get why you think the basket is wrong, I have done things this way, your way and diagonal so what is wron about it? As for the turnback I have never used one and wouldnt even know where to start, I would appreciate info on this as well. Now I want to make it very clear I am not trying to argue I just dont understand a few things and thank you very much for the input. Tim Some of the guys on here were talking about the sun tanning, and it works you oil it up and put it in the sun and it almost looks tanned. the Saddle lac is for a resist. that way the antiquepaste dosent get on everything just the low portions. the Tankote and the topcoat of Saddle lac are just a finish. I might have overdone it but its the only way I know.
  5. I hate the way that the rattle cans spray they are very uneven. I hate even more that we have to resort to them since there is no more Neet Lac. what I have been doing is spraying it liberally onto a peice of shearling and applying that way, I get a way better finish.
  6. I am in need of a side of 4/5 oz chap leather. I have called hide house, springfeild, goliger, sheridan, and a few others and no one has what I need. I am looking for the tight smooth grained leather not the pebble type grain. if you can help please let me know as I have an order pending.
  7. they look good to me mark. What leather are you using?
  8. I just wanted to wish all of the moms out there a Happy Mothers Day. I hope that you all get what you deserve, and that is a great day.
  9. Here is the first project that I have done with the new tools from Barry King and the first side of Herman oak leather that I have purchased. I am pretty happy with it. as always there are things that I will change next time. This purse will be lined with black 1.5 oz. Swine and have a black chap leather gusset I havent decided what to do for handles yet I would like to do round handles but I dont have a rein rounder so I will have to figure something else out. if you have any suggestions let me know. I should post this in the critique section but I will just tell all of you to let me know what you think so far. The finish is one light coat of extra virgin olive oil, a day in the sun, two coats of Saddle lac applied with sheepskin (not sprayed) one coat of Feibings sheridan brown antique. I still have to put the final finish on ( one coat of Tan Kote and one coat of Saddle lac) So have at it and let me know what you think. Thanks to all Tim
  10. Now I dont know a darn thing about Aussie stock saddles so bear with me. Are you using this as a nightlatch would be used on a Western type saddle, if the horse gets a little Broncy you got something to grab?

    Knives

Well I use an osborne round knife and on ocassion I do use a trim knife also an osborne. to me they are indispensible.
  12. I dont have one but my feeling on this tool is that they are mainly for borders and such
  13. Hey there everyone I know that this probably is going to sound stupid to alot of you but I want to share anyway. I received the set of checkered bevelers from Barry King for my birthday and I also finally bit the bullet and purchased my first side of 8/9 oz herman oak. I have to say I dont know which of the two is better, all I know is I carved my first Sheridan pattern using this combination today and I have to say that my carving and tooling has never looked so good. Now I know that I still have millions of miles to go to get even half as good as alot of you that I truly admire, (hidepounder, Bruce, Elton) just to name a few I know that there are more of you out there but those are just a few. I will share some pics once the purse is done but I just wanted to share my experiences and say to all that are on the fence about buying quality tools or leather that they are both well worth the money. thanks for reading my rambles. Tim
  14. Hey Bob I had to cut and paste it into the address bar to make it work
  15. This is a worderful site. Thank you for posting and I am sure as heck gonna be able to find inspiration here.
  16. if you can, make a line with a set of wing dividers that follows the edge and then just follow that line. and practice practice practice.
  17. there are alot of threads on here about how tandys tools have gone down hill. I personally have bent quite a few.
  18. its not a needle feed because the needle just goes up and down not back and forth correct? I am right now running nylon thread and have had fairly good results. Ponygirl as for what I am wanting to do I want a little bigger thread for the chinks that I am doing one for looks and two I think that it will be a little tougher. i have never had any trouble with the 69 except that it looks really small and on some projects I want the stitching to stand out a little better. almost all of the projects that I have been worried about the small thread I just double stitch and it takes all of my worries away, Well that and beer.
  19. luke when you run the 138 what size needle are you running? do I have to run a bigger needle than if I am running 69? you can pm me if you want with the info so we are not taking up space here.
  20. I am currently running 69 thread through my singer 31-15, I am curious what the biggest thread and twist and whatnot I can run through this machine. I am hoping that Cobra steve and Art and all of the other Professional stitcher Gurus can chime in here and help me.
  21. Them sure are purdy. To bad theyre gonna get all muddy and bloody. and possibly turn a shade of green. in all seriousness those turned out real nice
  22. Well I guess its about the same, Barry sells the knife and a blade for 45 and weaver is selling just the knives for 33 and blades for 12. so its six of one and half a dozen of another I guess. I misread the Weaver book. I thought that it came with a blade but you order those seperate. It is all making sense now. I am just slow is all
  23. The problem that I see with these is that I think that they are like Steel working rivets. You place these rivets through the holes and peen the heck out of them and it mushrooms the end and in steel they will not pull through the holes, with leather however I dont think that the "mushroom" would hold as the leather would stretch around it and pull through. Just my thoughts and I am not positive on the retention or the outcome it just seems that way to me. Good luck and keep us posted.
  24. Those look interesting but how do you set them? What retains them?
