Hello everyone, It's been a VERY long time since I've posted anything here, because I went on a rather long hiatus with my leatherwork and only turned out 3-4 items in the last year and a half, or so. I'm getting back into the game, though, and yesterday I delivered a holster for a compact 1911. It is made of 7-9oz horsehide leather and the saddle-stitching is done with artificial sinew. The design is "bottomless," so it will actually fit a full- or mid-size 1911 just as well, as you can see from the photo with my full-size 1911 blue gun.

Hello everyone, I haven't been on much at all over the past year, as we have been dealing with family medical issues, and I haven't done much leatherwork during that time, either. This past weekend I had a guy who lives down the road a bit ask me to make him a sheath for one of his JK Handmade Knives that was a one-off design. Hello everyone, It's been a while since I've posted anything on here--I've been on-again-off-again with my leatherwork, first because we were looking for a house and now because my mother-in-law has been diagnosed with cancer and we are having to fly back and forth to Illinois. That said, my mother-in-law has asked me to make a horsehide wallet for her husband and I can't very well say "no" . Unfortunately, I don't have horsehide thin enough to make a wallet comfortable, so I wanted to know if I can send a strip of horsehide to somebody with a leather splitter who might be able to get it down to about 2oz? If not, I'll be sitting in the kitchen shaving leather with a knife for a few weeks, lol. If anybody is able to do this, just let me know here or in a PM and I can ship a strip of horsehide to you to be split. Thanks in advance! ~Noah

That looks very nice! I really like the hooks, too! As for softening it up, just use a little extra virgin olive oil, mink oil or neatsfoot oil and work it into the leather and you should find that it softens up and becomes more pliable.

Hello everyone, So, I know that everybody is familiar with bifold and trifold wallets that fold into two or three sections, respectively, but it seems like I don't see very many "monofold" wallets so I figured I would make a couple real quick. Maybe you guys make them but never post them because they are stupid simple but I think they are kind of classy . The pictures aren't the best because the sun was already down when I finished them (I usually take photos outdoors) but I think you can get the idea of what I was going for with these. They are made of 5-7oz horsehide and can fit a credit card, an ID and a little cash for when you just want to carry the bare necessities, whether you are out on an ultralight hike or out on the town in clothes that don't really work with a full-size wallet.. What do you think?

I've played around with it but now I use particle's method of measuring and using half the thickness of the gun, plus the thickness of the leather, then I set a compass to that measurement and trace around the gun. Tends to work out pretty well, with only a little adjusting.

I've gotten horse butt strips from Zack White, Milton Sokol and Maverick and I would have to say that the leather I got from Maverick is the best. I've had some issues with their quote request system on their website but Matt is quick to process orders once he has them so I just emailed him directly for my last order.

I always use a welt, although I sometimes also use rivets or eyelets for either decorative purposes or for particularly sharp/pointy blades.

Hi Dave, The Blackberry Curve is a bit smaller than the Blackberry 8830, but it will still work--the Curve is probably about 1/8" narrower and just a hair thinner.

Denatured alcohol from the hardware store is better, but yes, you can use isopropyl alcohol

In my experience Fiebing's Medium Brown is actually quite dark if you don't dilute it, but it will lighten a bit when it dies.

Your stitching appears to be tight enough to the gun, but there doesn't look like there is nearly enough molding to the trigger guard and ejection port.
