The Ontario machete is made from 1075 and I've never bent one even after glancing blows. They sharpen very well and hold the edge a long time. I've thought about 1095 but would be afraid it might be too brittle unless it's built with a little more girth? More girth would be more weight or less length? Yeah, I've been spitballing the same idea myself. I guess I'll just have to dig out my forge and try it some day?

Yeah, I'm a machete maniac. Was showing a workmate my machete and he sneared and said he uses a chainsaw. I laughed and told him to load it up and we'll pack in five miles for seven days and see what he prefers. I've got chainsaws, axes, hatchets and, machete's. When it's time to hike, I'll take a machete every time although, I prefer 18 -22" depending on how much room I have to swing it.

I guess I'm not familiar with the term steam punk but I hope it's good. Lol Thanks for the compliments

Now I'm thinking that maybe a pouch for a file could be incorporated into it, might be a good idea also?

I know its been a while but I heard rumer that Ontario knives has folded so I wanted to build some nicer sheiths for my machete's. In my previous coments I mentioned my idea of putting a mole type of strap down the backside but then I thought I could put some belts down the length too? On a couple, I put a D ring top and bottom so I can use a sling as an option also? Im fairly happy with a couple of them but I think Im on the right track now? Maybe someone else might find this usefull or even take my ideas and expand on it.

How to simulate battle wear for LARP armor
Thadrick replied to ThisIsMyFirstRodeo's topic in How Do I Do That?
I've been building a couple armor wear lately. Mines not for show but for battle on my dirt bikes. I'm tired of having bruises on my shins and want to protect my forearms in the event I should lay it down on rocks. I'm hoping mine don't get battle scars but if they do, one less bruise I won't have to suffer. I'm not sure what kind of damage your wanting on your armor but you could just whip it over some rough cut iron of various shapes? -
Cowboy outlaw sewing machine
Thadrick replied to Carriesleatherworks's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I ordered my machine from Tandy and I ordered a bunch of other paraphernalia with it. I'm finding that I've not used any of the extras yet but with two machines maybe I can set the second one up to do different tasks easily? Just remember, these machines aren't fast, I don't need fast. I've been using it for large canvas projects and it's painfully slow for that kind of use. My job gets more stressful when it's cold [ like it is now] so I haven't had a chance to look for deals on the one I'm planning to order next. If you find a good deal pass it on to me. I'm still playing catchup around here. -

Cowboy outlaw sewing machine
Thadrick replied to Carriesleatherworks's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I really like mine however, I don't have a lot of experience with sewing machines. After a couple years of use I finally broke my first part yesterday. The cable to lift the foot broke and I'm hoping getting a new cable will be easy with their customer service? I have no experience with them either. Sewing leather up to 5/8 is easy as can be. -
I made an mp3 player sheath using those clips, (both large and small clips) so I can just hook it to my penny pocket on my jeans. I use it mostly when im working around the boiler plant so I can relocate it on my body depending on my tasks. Sometimes on my hip pocket and sometimes on my front pocket. After only 3 months of use, my jeans started coming out of the laundry with frayed pockets. The clips are made from stamped steal and they have sharp edges so, beware to use Emory cloth to smooth them up. The phone holsters I made using clips hook to my belt and they chew up the leather too, but never had one pop off.

Cutting the center out will be easy enough with a flush cut router bit. I used to have a huge cabinetry shop and the routers are the heart of every project I do. I can even use my worn out wood molds to build the new ones. I've cut lost of plex in the past but acrylic will be new to me. Surely it can't be harder than the micarta scales I've been Cutting can it?

Thats another topic also. Last year I discovered That I can no longer hear rattle snakes. Stumbled into 3 of them while prairie dog hunting and my buddy had to point at them so I didnt step on them. Even after knowing exactly where they were with my eyes directly on them, I could not hear them. My buddy said they were singing very loud but, nothing. Im not affraid of snakes at all but, I sure would like to know Im not going to get bit by one because I couldnt hear its warnings..

So I live in my steel toe loggers for 16 hours a day at work and play and feel naked without them. I only have one pair of tenis shoes that are about 5 years old that I purchased solely for swimming the rivers and resevours. I also have a decent pair of motocross boots that I hate. They are stiff and trying to walk in them is as comfortable as walking barefoot on the railrod tracks. Shifting and braking on my motorcycle requires serious concentration and I usually find my self shifting on accident when taking jumps because the motocross boots are stiff and push the shift lever when I shift my weight on landings. Its not a problem when Im wearing my loggers and tend to have much better control and feel. Do you think that maybe building some leggins (whatever a person might refer to them as) out of some #12oz saddle leather would give me enough protection for motocross and endouro riding? That way I can continue to ride with my loggers instead of dedicated motocross boots? If so, does anyone have any plans or ideas I could look at while I design a pair for myself?

I use a flush cut bit in my router with a strait piece of wood as a guide for cutting plex. I also use it for cutting thin aluminum panels very successfully

A Christmas gift for my sister

I used paint to rotate and resize them. I know they aren't the original file because those files are too large to post? -
A Christmas gift for my sister
Thadrick replied to Thadrick's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
Yeah, I enjoy leather working a lot but it can't compete with the smiles I get from the crf450r. Lol Since I work shift work, I have to get as much sun as I can during the summer months. I took my leather working tools camping with me once though, I was pounding away when the hair went up and I turned around to see a bear wandering torward my camp. I decided that paying attention to my surroundings was more important when camping. Thanks for the compliments -

why are they crooked? I spent the last 20 minutes rotating them to be strait on my computer before I posted them????? -
Ive been having too much fun this summer but now its time to start getting busy with leather again. Thought I would show&tell with a purse I made for my sister but, I havent seen many women wearing purses anymore? Maybe its a passing fad? Hope she likes it. Anyhow, if there are ideas or things that would be better when designing these let me know because I have to make a couple more

utility holsters
Thadrick replied to Thadrick's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Maybe this will help? Its my best pattern so far. The belt is made out of 8 oz veg tan but I found that the back is a lot more comfortable if i use 2-4 oz suede. The suede helps keep the belt located properly on the hip when bending sitting or just walking. Ive used veg tan on the back of the belt and found the pistol starts pulling the belt down my hip and when sitting it starts to slide around my cheeks
