Ok question. How do other leather crafters do it. i have been doing it for a long time. Black belts I use exclusively Herman oak 10-11oz leather. But anyways I stamp my letters then paint them. 2 coats angelus with 2-3 coats of angelus sealer . Then I use thr eco flo stain either the leteher dye or the water stain either or. I had a bad batch several bad batches of Fiebings dyes in black and USMC dye. Not good. I apply the stain and when I go over the letters I quickly wipe off dye on painted letters. Usually it comes off with good results but this gold letter I am just having problems and red. I need to go over and redo all the lettering . Question does anyone stain the whole belts first then use white on letters and then a couple coats of gold or other colors? Any help or tips should be so appreciated. Sorry the red is on another leather.

Hi! First of all - sorry for my english, i know it's bad So, today i saw a nice carved leather wallets, with freaking amazing dying technique. Now i can't sleep because i need to know how to get these colours. I think its not spirit dyes, seems like water based or acrylic used with some snain ot acrylic gel (i dont know), but, its so vintage, and lean, yes, its looks old, but clean. Do you have any ideas, or maybe you know this technique? Maybe you can give some advise of dye brand?..God, that's make me mad...

I am having a little problem with my work, and don't know who to ask for help. The project is wet forming leather for a small pouch in a two part form. When I pull my forms apart there is a lot of staining on part of the leather. My forms are maple, with a coat of lacquer. I am soaking the leather in fairly hot water before I put them in the form. Then I am using some very modest heat to help dry them in the form. I will attach photos so you can see the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Which is better for repelling dye/stain? I need to paint some letters light gray and dye the leather black. I've been experimenting with the two, and am still working on it, but though I'd ask if anyone has any experience in this area. I had planned to dye first, but it distorts the paint color if I paint on dye/stain.

So I have traced and carved a dragon on a wallet similar to the one below. No I did not do this fine piece of work - wish I could. I'm to the staining part and was looking for any tips on staining with mulitple colors like this. Where can I go to find some instructions? I really love when leather fades from a dark to a lighter color. Just not sure how to do it. Never been taught and never seen it done. Do you think this is all airbrushed on? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Hi guys, I'd like to introduce myself: My name is Brandon, I'm from NY and am very interested in leather products. I've always been a fan of the richness and how it adds an air of high quality to anything it touches. I currently work with a jeweler who I am very interested in having help me make custom clasps for leather braided bracelets. The style of braiding is what I'm unsure of. I believe it to be a flat leather lace that is double braided or maybe two seperate rows of double braiding..I would love to create bracelets out of really bright, vibrant colors like seafoam green, lapis, coral, and would love if someone could point me in the direction (after establishing what type of leather lace I need) where I can find it in the colors I'm looking for. I will stop my bumbling now and just attach some pictures for you all. Thank you in advance for your help, I will post finished images of my end product. -- Thanks again, Brandon

Good morning everyone! So I was wondering how you go about getting your tooled design one color and the rest of the leather another color without completely messing up your entire project? ha! I'm guessing one would use a resist of some sort and then do you just very carefuly dye around the tooled design? I really want to learn how to do this. I've researched the forums here and found examples people have posted out of their own work but never found a definitive explanation as to how this look is achieved. I have attached a picture of some spur straps a tack maker created that are the exact look I'm going for. They are an absolute beautiful piece of work and I would love to be able to achieve that two tone color effect in my own work. Thanks for your time everyone and hope you are all doing well!! I'm sure many of you are very busy getting Christmas orders together!!

I have been looking into buying an airbrush for applying finish to my products. Is an gravity fed airbrush or a siphon fed better for this? I know a lot of people on here are using them and was just wanting to get ideas on how everyone had theirs set up.

Hi there, I had finished this case of mine around the first week of January and I've been using it ever since to hold and protect my Microsoft Surface Pro tablet while I go to college. Anyway, I ran into a couple problems partially due to my inexperience and my fondness for my "just winging it" strategy. I had a rough time trying to knot the ends of my stitching without it ending up loose. Is there a way, and I'm sure there is, to end the stitching so that the stitching is super tight? Actually, that is the only problem I encountered. The stitching was some waxed bankline that I typically stitch with because it's super strong and holds its knotting very well. My leather was just a veg tanned shoulder piece that, if I remember correctly, was 6 mil leather? Maybe, it's some thick stuff. I used white treated canvas for the flap and stained it brown to match the stain of the leather a bit. I made the design stenciled it onto the piece and then burned the design in. Oh, and I glued some very soft blue fabric on the inside to protect my tablet from scratching or rogue leather particles from it. Lastly, I clear coated everything except the canvas to protect it a little. I know that was a long post, but I appreciate your feedback. -Chris Paton

Hi All, Quick question about the process of dyeing and finishing when stitching a project by hand. I am working on my first sheath and will also be hand stitching for the first time. In general, should I start stitching with the leather already dyed and finished? Should I be stitching first and dyeing and finishing later on? Should I wait to finish the piece after dying and sewing it together in order let the acrylic finish protect the thread and holes from the awl? I'm not sure what the proper method should be for this and any guidance would be most appreciated.

I am doing a belt and I want to get the letters darker than my dye I am using. I have only stamped a couple of times all my stuff is plain (no tooling) minimal stamping. The customer wants the letters to be darker. The example they gave me is attached. I have practice using a dark brown dye but it just looks a little browner. I have also used a highlighter but only minimal results. Any suggestions or tips. This is really my first time doing this kind of stamping. Pat
