Eagle Carving.

Recommended Posts

Well I keep working on carving at times and still feel I have tons to learn.  I'm working on this eagle. It's in process. It's going on the inside of a custom box lid which will be a gift. Leather is approx 8 inches by 14 inches.  Open to thoughts on improving and how to gwt better at figure carving too.  Backgrounding next.

Ok has to dry and then I need to decide how to finish it or what to finish it with I should say.  It's chestnut wicket and kraig skirting leather so it has color.

Anyway was asked to add a feather and initials so done.

So the main body as well as well as some of the wings I used a needle.  Basically same as using a modeling spoon but smaller.  So for some I used the side other work the tip and just kept working through adding feathers. Thanks for the kind words

The detail work on the eagle is awesome. Nice touch on the knife guard, looks like eagle talons on the ends.

Beautiful work.  The feather detail is awesome.  My hands start to cramp just thinking about how long that must have taken.

Thanks Doc. I used a pebble background set of tools and kind feathered and faded it our into the plain area of the leather.

Appreciate the kind words.  Glad the knife guard translated to talons.  That was my goal. I forged the guard and added in brass foe the talon part and shaped them to be talon like.  I also carved the eagle head out of brass.   By far the most complex knife I personally have made.  It was quite an experience imo.  Fun

Kind words thanks.  I didn't time it but took several hours for sure.  Surprisingly.it went faster than I thought.  I look at some of the best carvers out there Jim Linnel being one and I know I have a lot to learn yet.

Not trying to turn this into a knife discussion but here are a few more shots of the knife.  I had the damascus bilet made by a friend and I forged it to shape.  Forged the talons and added the brass, added spaces in red white and blue the wood ha dle and carves the eagle head from solid brass.

The sheath I also made and carved an eagle head on it and did 3 feathers overlayed in red white and blue.

Just thought some folks might appreciate the look.  We all make things and the help we all share here and tips etc I know have helped my limited work and skills.

Best

Ross

Everything about the knife is impressive, I especially like the optical illusion of a depression the grain around the knot creates.  When I make both knives and boxes the grain often choses the wood for me, and boxes are often built around their tops, chosen for the grain patterns.

I'm just starting to get the hang of carving, vs. Tooling patterns.  The Eagle looked great to me, though I would have added the extended talons for dramatic effect.
