Members TomE Posted February 4, 2024 Members Report Posted February 4, 2024 (edited) Well this turned out kind of clunky, but it's the best I could come up with for this blade. My first sheath, for my niece the archeologist. She does underground imaging of old and new objects and sometimes bushwhacks her way to work. I sharpened the blade so she will also be ready for a zombie apocalypse. Edited February 4, 2024 by TomE Quote
Members dikman Posted February 4, 2024 Members Report Posted February 4, 2024 Looks very practical and considering it's probably going to get the stuffing knocked out of it in use should be more than adequate. Quote
Members DieselTech Posted February 4, 2024 Members Report Posted February 4, 2024 Looks great! Nice work. Should last her for years. Quote

My neice says she uses the machete often and the sheath will keep her safer than the nylon cover she had been using. She ties the machete to her pack when not in use. Quote
Members Thadrick Posted March 10, 2024 Members Report Posted March 10, 2024 I love machetes and have several. A couple of my sheaths look crappie but I had to put something on the blade because I'm accident prone. I like yours better than mine. Lately I picked up some cheap 4/5 suede and made a bunch of sheaths to get me by until I can make something better. My idea would be to put mole style straps down the back side si I can strap it to my pack down the length? I'm still trying to brain storm on the subject. I have a lot of ideas that I haven't master yet but yours looks great ! Quote
Members Dwight Posted March 11, 2024 Members Report Posted March 11, 2024 Now if it were saddle tan . . . full basket weave . . . with maple leaves . . . antiqued . . . Just kidding . . . it's great the way it is . . . and I'm much more into practical leather anyway . . . and that certainly will meet that requirement. May God bless, Dwight Quote

I think I should have added more attachment points for a pack because my niece won't be wearing this from her belt. 2 hours ago, Dwight said: Now if it were saddle tan . . . full basket weave . . . with maple leaves . . . antiqued . . . May God bless, Dwight I have avoided leather tooling since returning to the craft, although my Tandy tools from the 1970s are sitting in my shop. Was never very good at it and decided to instead focus on cutting and sewing for a while. This sheath is made from the leftover belly of a bridle side. The machete and sheath only recently arrived at my niece's house, a full month after mailing the package. The Saint Louis mail sorting facility swallowed the package for a few weeks. Then there was a problem with the zip code at the destination and it took several weeks to reroute the package to a neighboring post office. All's well that ends well. Quote
Members Thadrick Posted March 11, 2024 Members Report Posted March 11, 2024 Yeah, The one I built with a belt loop didnt make me happy. I put it on a walked around the house and almost every step it stabbed me in the calf. Im sure if I was outbacking it sooner or later it would trip me up. Quote

Members Thadrick Posted April 13 Members Report Posted April 13 I know its been a while but I heard rumer that Ontario knives has folded so I wanted to build some nicer sheiths for my machete's. In my previous coments I mentioned my idea of putting a mole type of strap down the backside but then I thought I could put some belts down the length too? On a couple, I put a D ring top and bottom so I can use a sling as an option also? Im fairly happy with a couple of them but I think Im on the right track now? Maybe someone else might find this usefull or even take my ideas and expand on it. Quote
Members TomE Posted April 14 Author Members Report Posted April 14 Those are good looking sheaths! I like the straps and multiple points for attaching to a person, saddle, etc. Quote
Members Thadrick Posted April 14 Members Report Posted April 14 Now I'm thinking that maybe a pouch for a file could be incorporated into it, might be a good idea also? Quote
Members rleather Posted April 14 Members Report Posted April 14 Awesome work! I really like the darker one. Thanks for sharing Quote
Members dikman Posted April 14 Members Report Posted April 14 Pretty fancy work for a machete. Has a sort of Steam Punk look about it. Quote
Members Thadrick Posted April 15 Members Report Posted April 15 I guess I'm not familiar with the term steam punk but I hope it's good. Lol Thanks for the compliments Quote

Lighter and just plain better for choppin small stuff. Quote
Members Thadrick Posted April 15 Members Report Posted April 15 Yeah, I'm a machete maniac. Was showing a workmate my machete and he sneared and said he uses a chainsaw. I laughed and told him to load it up and we'll pack in five miles for seven days and see what he prefers. I've got chainsaws, axes, hatchets and, machete's. When it's time to hike, I'll take a machete every time although, I prefer 18 -22" depending on how much room I have to swing it. Quote

Your file pouch idea would be a needed and excellent addition for sure if you can figure out how to add it on to your existing sheathes. I bought cheapo 5 dollar machetes and have one stuck in about everything that leaves the road. lol same with cheap knives. I'm going to grind a new blade out of 1095 and temper it to the point it bends instead of breaking and put on a nice handle then maybe a new sheath as well. Always wanted to do justice to a blade so plain but so purpose-built and functional. Quote

They sharpen very well and hold the edge a long time. I've thought about 1095 but would be afraid it might be too brittle unless it's built with a little more girth? More girth would be more weight or less length? Yeah, I've been spitballing the same idea myself. I guess I'll just have to dig out my forge and try it some day? Quote
