Members SkullzandHides Posted March 14 Members Report Posted March 14 Most Leathercrafters Handstitch to begin with. I happen to be an EDC Leathercrafter who makes Knife Slips, Sheaths, Pocket Tool Slips and Pouches, etc. I have always used either a 1mm or 1.2mm Waxed Thread which is mostly based on the esthetics. Visually much more pleasing in the specific products I make. Recently I bought a Cobra 4-25 Sewing Machine in order to increase my capacity to scale our humble little home business. So I knew that I needed to use a Thicker Thread for Stitching with a Machine. Where I won't be hiding the fact that we will be using a Sewing Machine for certain lines of products, I also don't want to vastly change the appearance we are known for which includes thicker Stitching. It's insane just how much difficulty I am having finding a bonded machine thread (in any material) in a Size 415 Tex 410 Thread. I can find Black, White, even found a Beige. But no other Colors. I really just need Brown now and after days of seaching, emailing manufacturers and sellers, I have hit a wall. Nothing. It's actually hard to believe that it's this difficult when .8mm and 1mm Waxed Thread is so popular and widely available. Does anyone out here actually use Size 415 who has a source? Quote
Members BlackDragon Posted March 14 Members Report Posted March 14 https://stleather.com/product/nylon-machine-thread-415/ The class 4 is designed to run 270 with a #25 needle. You will need a #28 needle and may be pushing the Class 4 with that thickness thread. You'll probably have to adjust your tension and your hook clearance Quote
Members Cumberland Highpower Posted March 14 Members Report Posted March 14 (edited) It's probably just due to lack of demand I'd imagine. I run allot of poly thread and I often have the same complaint. (Poly is hard to dye). Black and white are common colors for nylon rigging/slings, etc. That's what thread of that size would be used for on any commercial scale. I'm sure any thread maker would make a run of nylon for any customer who purchases a large enough lot? I'd guess the outfits selling hand sewing thread have lots made just for that. If you have the needles, I somewhat doubt you'd have any issues running it through your machine though. I bet you could run greased masonry line through your machine if you had needles/feet/feed dogs cut for it! Most any time I come into threads larger than 277 I either sell it off or toss in the trash. Really large threads are somewhat counter to the norm for sewing leather. (One should really use as small a thread as practical). Of course if you're trying to make a bold statement larger threads work pretty well, no set rules there. A little bit of the norm on some holsters. Edited March 14 by Cumberland Highpower Quote
Members Dwight Posted March 14 Members Report Posted March 14 I bought a spool of 415 a couple years back . . . as I had always used 346 and thought I'd pop the bigger thread for "exhibition" sake. After a couple of times messing with it . . . I went back to 346 . . . and am still there. I only use black and white . . . black for black products . . . the white for everything else . . . It does not take the dye like I would like for it to do . . . but I've never had a complaint on the thread. Try the 346 . . . I'm sure there are folks who will make that in colors . . . and it is a pretty bold thread. May God bless, Dwight Quote
