Leathercraft or Leatherwork?

I usually just use leather worker. People know what it means and I really don't have to explain it to much.

Now if I'm at a fair I may use leather crafter or leather artisan/craftsmen. To me crafter sounds like you may sell cheaper small goods like key fobs, lanyards, wallets. Artisan/craftsmen sounds like you sell more expensive things even though they are the same item.

For me, it's "leather work" at the same time. I would not call a professional saddle maker a leather worker or a leather craftsman; I would think of them as a saddle maker.

This is kind of like the debate in the shooting world, "are you a reloader or a hand loader?".

I tend to think of Leather Crafter as a hobbyist or journeyman sort of level. Probably because lower grade leather and hides are often sold as "craft grade".

Or in many things, Handcrafted or Homemade? I think "homemade" carries the connotation that it's not really professional grade.

When I'm asked what hobbies I have I just say I dabble in leatherwork. People can make of that what they will.

Well thats better than the funny looks I get when I say 'I model', or 'make models'. Now reduced to 'I build Airfix model aeroplanes, I've never growed up'

 I just say I used to build plastic model kits, most seem to understand that.

Certain leather work or crafting has titles; ie cobbler = repairing footwear, cordwainer = making footwear, saddler, and others. 

But what about bag-makers, leather armourers, board-game makers, and such. We need to make up names to cover those crafts

The majority of the people here are experts and professionals.

Professional leatherwork - there should be a proper noun for that.

I mean, farmers call themselves 'agriculturists', I discovered some time ago.

I don't blame them. When we say 'farmer' the layman sees  someone in overalls standing in a field, but an agriculturist brings a different vision to mind. 

Farmers are  as expert in their field as doctors in medicine. So they deserve that respect.

As do leatherworkers. So a name that commands that respect is long overdue, maybe. 

In medicine, everyone is a doctor but individuals specialize - neurologist, surgeon, ophthalmologist etc.

So a leather professional, who is a saddler, cordwainer, etc. That would command the respect that is deserved.

I remember on the Jackie Gleason show, Jackie was trying to get a new job. He said to Norton I can't seem to get a job Norton said Let me see that application Norton looked at it and said, " No wonder you can't get a job. You put in that you're just a bus driver, Norton now said. I could get that job, Jackie said, you work in a sewer.
