The specs say the weight is 15 lbs. What size needle should I use with this weight of thread. The Coats site (and chat) were not helpful. Thanks! A short Google search found an answer on the Sailrite website. They sell Coat and Clark 3 ply Upholstery thread and make it plain that it is Tex 70. This is one of the lighter bonded nylon threads used in leather work. It calls for a #18/110 needle. Tex 70 is also known as #69 bonded thread. It has a breaking strength of 10 to 11 pounds depending on the brand and its age. Older thread tends to snap sooner than fresh thread. It is generally used to sew wallet interiors together, or light weight upholstery seams that aren't under a lot of stress. Quote
Members BelleH Posted April 3, 2024 Members Report Posted April 3, 2024 Thank you Wizcrafts. I had done numerous internet searches and I sailrite didn't come up, but I had used a different search engine. Now I'm embarrassed because I should have seen that info. Anyway, I just did a test. I just tried searching with it again with the other search engine and sailrite didn't come up. But then I repeated it with a Google search, and there it was! Regardless, I now have my answer. Thank you again. Quote

I checked every link I saw in all of the pages in this topic and none went to car insurance pages. There was a 404 not found on a forum though. This was an old topic that started in 2011. Members ElfLeather Posted December 31, 2024 Members Report Posted December 31, 2024 (edited) I'm shopping for system 34 needles and kinda scratching my head. The thread exchange has a lot of options, or maybe not? Does AKA mean all of these needle systems are identical? Non-identical but interchangeable sytems? or the specific needles fit each of these distinct systems? Edited December 31, 2024 by ElfLeather Quote
Members TonyGreen3455 Posted December 31, 2024 Members Report Posted December 31, 2024 (edited) Needles again Having CB3500 clone - can I find 794 needles for sewing leather smaller, than size 160LR? 794 140LR - does it exist at all? Otherwise - sewing with 794R size 140 - it's not counted it as a "heavy" sewing, therefore we can use regular R point needles? Edited December 31, 2024 by TonyGreen3455 Quote
Members HDLimited Posted February 11 Members Report Posted February 11 I'm getting into sewing patches on motorcycle vests. Got a consew 206rb & consew 29 patcher. I've read this site for hours and got lots of great info. I know I should use #69 thread and have seen recommendations on BNT. Should I use bonded nylon thread or bonded polyester? There are more colors available in nylon but these vests spend lots of time outdoors in the sun. Thanks in advance for your help! Quote

There are more colors available in nylon but these vests spend lots of time outdoors in the sun. Thanks in advance for your help! I've been using bonded nylon thread to sew patches since 2012. I normally use #69 thread, top and bottom, with a #18/110 Schmetz Serv 7 round point needle in system 135x17. I discovered that leather point needles tend to separate the edge threads, which are usually sewn with a serger. Round points don't usually ruin the edge appearance like leather points. I think that if I lived in a hotter location, where there was a lot more sunlight, and sewed for local clubs, I might switch to bonded polyester thread. It is only slightly weaker than nylon. While #69 (T70) thread is adequate for securing patches on a thin vest, it may not do so a padded leather jacket. If the owner expresses concern about the thread letting go, or the patches being too easy to tear off, move up to #92 thread and use a #19/120 round point needle. Try to sew close to the border on club name or logo patches, to make them harder to pull off. Ambushes happen in Biker life. Quote
