Really really nice work. I am amazed that your "firsts" sure dont look like firsts. I have a question if you dont mind. I see on the large coaster, (and a bit between the basket weave of the small purse or so it looks to me), the much darker stain in the back ground. when I try this effect, I usually use a small paint brush and paint the darker dye, then after dries, do the whatever colors I am goiing to do. is that what you did for the large coaster? for teh small purse (which I thought was so nice) i see its very dark between the basket weave, now, you didnt paint that. how did you get that effect?

that large bag for me, is like you said a little big, but its what the wanted. it is still super clean in its design. all you stuff is.

thanks in advance for your time.

Hi Bob,I think we do the color by the same steps.

Carving----> tooling ----> darker dye in the background with small brush(sometime I do not paint the background.Let the paste itself contrast the background and flower)------>emulsion lacquer(if I want the flower remain light color to get a strong contrast.Chech the cigar case below.for this one I did not use lacquer and let the paste remain some color on the flower)----->paste.

Is it the same?

As for the basket weave,I do not brush any dye, simply let the paste remain in the small low "valleys".

Wish I am clear

This one I did not use lacquer after dying the background and before the paste. The paste also can give some color to the flower.

thanx for the reply. I understand what you mean. I have not used paste. they stains or dyes I have used dont leave the background quite as dark as your paste is. so I was not understanding. your post made it clear, thank you for taking the time.

Beautiful work, something for me to aspire to.

boma.

I have a machine, and I am picking up a second one in January. But my hand sewing is no where as good as yours is.

Now, I must admit a machine does make the sewing go so much faster. But with the hand sewing technique that you process a machine would never match your quality.

I bow in your presence and hope that some day my hand sewing will come close to equaling yours.

That cigar case is beautiful! Perhaps "elegant" would be a better description.Wonderful photography on your work, also.
