Your fav non-typical meat

Okay, Hilly's posts about getting a muzzle loader, and everyone starting to chat about eating "fuzzy little creatures", got me wondering:

What is your favorite not-from-the-grocery-store meat? It doesn't have to be something you yourself went out and shot. For example, I don't hunt, but I like venison, dislike duck/pheasant, and adore ostrich. Not really thrilled with buffalo/bison (I understand it really has to be cooked properly to be good). My folks used to raise ostriches, and we had it in "hamburger helper", lasagna, "steak" sandwiches, stuffed peppers...you name it. Pretty much any way you'd use beef.

My #1 pet "ignorant person" line was always: "Oh, ostrich....tastes like chicken, right?" Then I'd have to educate them by telling them that it was actually a red meat, but lower in fat and cholesterol than many other meats.

The best "Not Off The Shelf" meat for me was introduced to me by a fella named Al E. Gator... ahahhahah I truly live for fresh Alligator! The other other white meat! Dip it in your favorite beer batter, and drop it in a fryer... Booyah ! I happen to live in a place where Alligator is abundant! ;)

I also LOVE Deep Fried Cajun Turkey! I bet I have cooked over 100 deep fried turkeys! I introduced it to some friends at a SuperBowl Party a few years ago and now I'm the "Official Turkey Cook"! It's the juiciest turkey you've EVER eaten (if you cook it right). However, be forewarned, IT IS DANGEROUS if not done properly. The only thing you really have to keep in mind is DO NOT DROP your turkey into the pot, LOWER IT IN SLOWLY! Dropping it in will cause FLAMMABLE PEANUT OIL to blop out over the edge and catch fire. Other than than that, once it's in the oil cooking, you have about 45 minutes of quality drinking time...

for more info on how to Deep fry a turkey, just let me know! I'll toss out the whole proceedure so you can try it at home...

Venison, buffalo, alligator, rabbit, squrriel,ground hog,turtle,elk,pheasant, goat if cooked right. I like all of those. I dislike antelope and dove reminds me of liver. yuck.

If Alligator tastes like croc I have to agree with you. We don't have crocs down here in the south but we do eat 'roo, wallaby, hare and rabbits. I like deer but wife and kids don't so I don't do much deer shooting these days and you have to walk too much whereas I can get the rest of them in my backyard except for the 'roo, I have to go a mile or so for them. 'Roo meat is good as it has no cholesterol and the family all like it. We have the 'roo like a pot roast or casserole or patties. I really think there is nothing quite like a good leg of lamb, though.

One of my all time favs is ruffed grouse.

We fillet the breast, and then slice it to thin cutlets. Dip in egg and seasoned bread/cracker crumbs. Pan fry slowly till cooked through, and sprinkle on a little shredded cheese. Serve with brown and wild rice dressing, and some fresh aparagus tips and a nice glass of white zinfandel. Can't think of a better meal! Too bad those things are so hard to shoot!

Tony, I have to tell you one of the reasons my folks were glad I married and moved out was that they could finally enjoy lamb at home. I can't stand to even smell it cooking. One Christmas business party, the main dish was rack of lamb, and there was no other option...not a fun time for me! LOL!

It just has to be moose (makes the best burges ever) and smooked/sundried reindeer heart. Yeah, the last one is very typical things from the northen parts Sweden and it taste wonderful:-)

(then we also have another favvo over there but it's a very tricky subject here to eat so just say, it can wear a saddle and contains 3 times as much protein compair to cow and 3 times less fat)

When we are in Sweden I take my American husband on all these "veird" food trips and I tell ya, he loves it :thumbsup:

Hi Holly,

Emu is pretty good, doesn't taste anything like a bird, more like beef. Nutria is pretty good pot meat; a couple of those, couple of squirrel, and an emu leg make the start of a pretty good stew. Throw some bacon or fatback in there as none of those are very fat meats.

CHICKEN!!!!! LOL, it's my fav.

When I was a kid, the neighbor raced HOMING Pigeons. Squab was a regular barbecue. Hmm, Hmm good.

Roasted Greek Lamb, second fav.

I've had Snake, and for strange .. Donkey in Morrocco. That's not very strange considering some Asian tastes.

On a fresh Deer kill, I prefer the tenderloin in Plum sauce.

Anyone ever watch all the gross stuff that Andrew Zimmern puts in his mouth on that show called "Bizarre Foods"?

Rotten shark meat, testicles of all kinds, eyeballs, etc. I wonder if he actually likes eating that stuff, or if he does it strictly for the shock value?

i think he actually does like the crap he eats...his belly looks like he enjoys it anyways hehe

but i can't take listening to that guy...something about him grates on my nerves...Anthony bourdain is the man though :red_bandana:

Forgot to add that when in the Northern Territory a few years ago I had buffalo and camel at different bbqs. The buff was great but the camel was revolting!

And if anybody uses a turkey fryer be sure and use it ouside(common sense you would think) But I've actcually been on a couple of fires where they were being used in garages. One guy actually burned his garage down kind of ruined his Thanksgiving day. Happy eating

theres some guys i know down in those parts that hunt'em with patterdales...$5.00 bounty for each if ya bring in a tail...they were originally brought over for the fur trade and now a nuisance/invasive species...

They get a bit bigger than a rat up here in MD, but they are a swamp rat of sorts. We are not lucky enough to have a bounty on them though.

I love Boar bacon, oak smoked if possible, grated mature cheese on top, grilled enough to melt, place a fresh chilli on top, roll it up and skewer it closed, grill it for another few minutes add a sprinkling of fresh ground black pepper and fried chilli flakes. OMG wonderfull, and hot enough to make anyone happy.

Add garlic and herb mayo to the centre of the chilli to cool it for the weak. Or simply for flavour if your making 10 or more...hehe

Aside from that I love rabbit way more than wood pidgeon, with kangaroo and alligator coming in next followed by mongolian duck. rich as anything but an absolute treat for the palate.

Tina, I want to know more about the fine print....we are one of the only nations that don't eat "things that wear saddles". With less fat and more protein it sounds like it would be better for us than beef..........so for the big question, what does it tast like?? Does it bear any similarities to beef??

You guys are making me hungry. My experience is pretty limited to deer, moose, partridge, rabbit, and wild boar.

I love the boar and moose the most. I don't hunt big game though so the only thing I have a chance of getting is the partridge or rabbit.

Best seafood I've ever had was grilled swordfish, with a lemon-honey-butter sauce. It had to be eaten with a spoon because it fell through the fork. Best I've ever caught and eaten is Blackend Blacktip Shark- Get you a propane burner, a really big cast iron skillet, and a half a beer. Light the burner and get the skillet WAY red hot, 'spill' your half beer in the blackening mix, dunk the shark steaks. Approach the skillet with caution, preferably from up wind- or have a fan blowing. Carefully slap the shark onto the skillet and have the STEEL spatula ready. At the right cooking temps, it happens like this....<toss> FOOSHSSSSSS <flip> FOOSHHHHHHHSSSSSSS <dinner is served>.

I'm not much of a hunter either. When you only have one good leg it's a little hard to follow a wounded deer or climb a tree stand. But if somebody is going to kill it and give it to me I'll eat just about anything. The only thing I've killed lately is a "Cup-O- Noodles"

Elk, moose, deer, grouse - rarely. I like elk the best, and Rod got his on the first day of the season, so we have meat for another year. Yay!

well living close to the ocean i'll have to say any kind of raw fish or raw octopus would be at the top of my list..that and some poi will do me right and make me happy :yes:

When I was a kid my mom used to make fried caves brain. She breaded it and it looked like a fried chicken breast. I loved it. Roasted cows tongue is also good.

I had a buddy whose dad came from Maine. One day I asked his dad what he was eating . It was chopped whale's eye. I didn't ask for a bite.

Another thing that's real nice is stuffed ox heart. Real good cold when it is cold and easier to slice. Of course lambs fry in a nice onion gravy is great and so is lambs fry cut up small and fried with chopped onions and bacon and then have on a slice of toast. Tastes great!
