Bought This Singer And Looking For Identification Of What It Is.

Hello and I bought this Singer (cobblers machine?). The serial number is:

Singer number

10689416

The lady I bought it from said it was last used by her husband 5 years ago and thought it just needs a good cleaning and oiling. I'll take it appart tomorrow and go into town and pich up some Sewing Machine oil from the local sewing machine repair shop. Here is some pictures and will take more tomorrow. Any help will be appreciated and I hope to sew leather knife sheaths.

It looks to me like an early Singer UFA (Universal Feed Arm) machine, the predecessor of the Singer 29-series machines.

Thanks CD and cleaning up the ole gal here and used some PB Blaster to free it all up which it must have been just gummed up from setting. Everything freed up really easy and will flush the PB off and go to town and see if I can find some Singer light oil or is 3 an 1 oil OK to use? Did some reading and your right a bout it being a UFA predating the start of the 29K serries. Now I read in one thread where the 29K parts should fit and like to get another bobin for it (man are they small) and also need to get some needles. Planning on making some knife sheaths for the knive I make here so will need to read up what size needle I need and also need to try and find where I can download the manual for this. Thanks for your help CD I have found this site to be a great help to people like me that is for sure. I am sure in the future I will be looking to upgrade to probably a Consew 206 RB 5.

Please don't use 3-in-one oil. Use mineral oil from the drug store or go to your local sewing shop/JoAnns/Michaels/Hobby Lobby/Moore's/Hancock Fabrics and get Dritz Stainless Machine Oil, it comes in an extend-a-spout container that works great. If you are not familiar with the above stores, wait (not long) for a 50 or 60 percent off sale.

I have always been a big fan of the Rem Oil with teflon in it and thinking it would work great. After cleaning this up and getting all the stickyness out it looks like it is going to run great. I just need to find a manual on it. I only paid 175.00 for it so thinking I did good.

I’m a big fan of “old iron” sewing machines, especially Singers. It will be nice to hear about you getting it back to sewing again. That will put a smile on my face.

I have an 1894 Singer UFA that I haven’t ever done anything with except staying latched onto it for some reason. It’s rusty and has got an obviously bent upper shaft, probably from being dropped, so it will take some work to get it going again. Maybe more work than I want to do. And, since I have a couple of 29K70 machines to play with, I haven’t had the urge to get the UFA going at all. I just look at it and wonder where it’s been and what it sewed.

That is cool CD and I have a small machine shop here if you need anything let me know. I have 5 screw machines and a CNC lathe and CNC Mill plus a 4 spindle 3D wood carving machine plus other equipment not counting the knife grinders etc....LOL

by the way i dont think this will handle thick sheath leather?? they were made for repairing boots and sewing light to medium leather.

Thanks for the manual and not liking to hear it will not handle very thick leather but hopefully if I take my time and go slow I hope it will work enough to get me into another machine. There was a GA5-1 sewing machine for sale but the people never had any contact info for it. That machine is suppose to sew up to 7/16" I guess. I have about 175.00 into this Singer so should be able to get my money out of it if I sell I think.
