chrisash Report post Posted September 1, 2018 Silly question but looking to progress to a rolled edge wallet and know i can use any leather, but what type of veg tan would you suggest and what thickness. Just want a nice finish but not for much money (pointless to buy a shoulder for maybe 2 sq Ft requirement) I did ask a guy who advertises on ETSY and had a video and templates for sale, Just asked what leather and thickness he suggest's before i brought the design, his answer "buy the design and its all in there" did not think it was going to be a trade secret, so not looking to buy his PDF and video now, hence the question to hopefully more helpful people
koreric75 Report post Posted September 1, 2018 For a rolled edge I use the same thickness for back and inner, just cut bigger to allow skiving and rolling... But honestly in it's veg tan I would rather burnish the edges... I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for...
chrisash Report post Posted September 1, 2018 Hi Koeric Thanks just feel i want to push myself and do some rolled edges and a wallet seems a good start and feel they look more professional, first thought is about 1mm veg tan and also seen some 1mm coloured bridal but cannot get that is a small enough quantity. Just wondered what others used
bikermutt07 Report post Posted September 1, 2018 Get yourself some chrome tanned stuff. It’s always available on the cheap
Matt S Report post Posted September 1, 2018 (edited) Le Prevo do a nice line in through-dyed veg goat. It's available in black and mid brown, a medium-soft temper that I think would roll fine, maybe with a slight skive. Being goat it's about 1mm thick and not very large skins buuuut they're out of stock at the moment. If you only want a couple SQFT you'll not have much to choose from. Look on eBay, there's usually a few sellers who sell small quantities. There's a lot more to choose from if you allow yourself to use chrome tan. Stetson912 Report post Posted September 2, 2018 Hey @chrisash, you really can use any leather you like for a rolled edge. It comes down to your skiving skills and thickness of leather. Personally, anything above say, 4-5 oz would be better bound or burnished. So I wouldn't go heavier than that. 2-3 oz would probably not need skived if it folds easy enough. So, I recommend skiving a 4-5 oz down and folding it over for your rolled edge on the back, and using 2-3 oz for the innards. Also, Ian Atkinson has a YouTube channel and shows how to do a rolled edge if you are so inclined. As to where to get a few feet, I can't help you much. I'm not familiar with vendors in your location. I know here in the states Maker's Leather Supply out of Texas sells wickett and Craig by the foot. But, I do not know if they ship internationally, nor do I think it would be worth it. Oh, search for remnant bags at your usual vendor too. Usually off cuts but sometimes bigger pieces are available. chrisash Report post Posted September 2, 2018 Thanks all some great suggestions, I have made a few in Chrome but feel they are missing something even with painted edges and one in a nice bit of veg about 1,2mm which came out nice until i went to use it and found it was designed for US Notes and the English notes stuck out the top of the wallet (lesson learnt, must pay attention to details) I think Matt's suggestion for goat seems a great idea and looks available in the UK Never skived for a job hence the need to try on something and a wallet seems a good starting place and i need a new wallet (see above) Had not heard of Le Prevo, looks a good source and may well have what i want, some great prices, think i will go with the goat and dye it myself

I can totally recommend you his Build Along #8 Enhanced Wallets. You have really everything in there to build a wallet along with an 8h video for a really low price. Cant give any info to the other pattern makers on etsy but his are well worth the money if you‘re a beginner
