Howdy, Someone requested this braid in the How Do I Do That? section, so I thought I'd see if I could do a tutorial. There are several different 9 strand braids, but I think this is my favorite. It is an over two under two pattern that gives a nice herringbone effect. Just for your infrmation, it is commonly used to braid the tails on bull ropes. Note: All numbers refer to the starting position of the string, begining with 1 on the left and continuing to 9 on the right. My braid is left loose to show the path that each strand takes. The first few steps show how to close up the top of the braid to make it more attractive when the end is already fastened in place. …

I start out with 4 strands of rawhide about 50" - 60" long and 1/4" wide. Middle the strands and move a inch or two to one side to start the 4 plait loop. You could also do this part with a split braid. sanjuanswivel_start loop by ss1442, on Flickr I have the 4 plait wrapped around a 3/4" dowel and have started the 8 plait body of the honda here. Bruce Grant's book "Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding" has a good illustration of going from 4 to 8 somerwhere around page 200 (I'll get the page and plate numbers later). sanjuanswivel_8 strand started by ss1442, on Flickr Here I have the body of the honda plaited out to 6" or 7". You can go shorter or longer …

This is how I do it now. It's different from how I was doing it last year and I might be doing things different next year. But this is how I am doing it now. Nothing I do is original I have stolen just about every idea I've ever had on any subject. I start with a hide that has been dehaired and has dried in a frame. I cut the whole thing out, role it up and toss it in a stock tank, then go to bed. The next morning, after coffee and conversation with sweetie I go out and haul the limp, soggy hide out of the water and let it hang for about an hour or two. Then I cut the whole thing into a 3/4 inch strip. This last hide gave about 475 feet. I then take that strip an…

I'm gonna guess that this is an old Tandy handout. This basic stitching can be modified a zillion ways, limited only by imagination. It can be a functional stitch (holding pieces together that may be subject to stress) but is most often used for hiding seams, framing an inlay, creating a pattern and the like. Enjoy! Johanna

Here's how I did it. This is about my 9th or 10th time I've done this and I still have quite a bit of room for improvement. Hope this helps anyone thinking they may want to try this. And if there are any thoughts on what I might have done diffferent or better I would be happy to hear them. First I purchased the hide from the local meat locker for $40 and was able to start working with it within 3 hours of the last heart beat. All of the excess fat and meat was removed first It is a great way to get some peace and quite, cause nobody wants to be around for that. Next, drop the whole works in a barrel of water with a coffee can of barn lime mixed in. I have found …

Well, I guess it's safe to go back in the water now so I'll try again. This is how I go about making a 1/2" bosal with a braided core. These are 3 cores in the different stages I use a reata type piece And then if I need to I cover it with a piece of lining leather or chap leather to make the desired finished size. I figure the lace thickness at 1/8th" which is basically the thickness of 4 strands since the strands cross over each other in the braid AND the thickness can be thought of as on the front and back. Then I add that to the radius of the core and the difference is made up in leather. . Then I braid over this with whatever I've decided on in this case it is a 16 s…
