Is B69 thread thick enough for use attaching bag handles?
MarlinDave replied to AEBL's topic in Sewing Leather
Similar question. Brother in law has a firewood carrier, synthetic eth web handles. Wants it remade with leather. Making it out of chrome tan, gonna contact cement and stich carry straps with 138. Do I need to add rivets too? Figure it will carry 50 to 60 lbs firewood. -
Where I live I would likely have to pay the utility $100,000 to get three phase to do projects give away.

Interesting but my machine has a single phase motor. I have single phase shop power and some 3 phase shop machines (lathe, mill, welder) running on converters. I would convert all these to single phase if not so expensive. I got a free 10 hp 3 phase compressor and swapped motors to single phase to dodge the converter hassle.

I was in Harbor Freight today and they had a $17 router speed control. Thought I would try this out. Plugged in the sewing machine, set the speed control to full speed, and turned on the machine. Blew the 8 amp glass fuse in the speed control before the machine turned over. I replaced the fuse and tried it on a small drill press, and it did okay, but would not run full speed on direct. Cant imagine it doing much with a 1 1/2HP router, but ill try that tomorrow. The clutch motor has a wing nut rod which limits clutch travel. I reset it and I can pretty much sew one to two stitches at a time.

The motor was new on the machine when I got it. Might have 20 hours on it.

Thanks for the ideas. I considered a VFD for some 3 phase machine shop items I have. Built rotary converters for 2, one came with a static converter box. I was always scared of VFDs because so many have problems with them. The clutch is not smooth at all - grabs all at once. It takes off fast, then slows.

It has the smallest motor pulley as well.

Hello, I have a Consew 225 with a clutch motor. Too fast for my use for leather. Built a belt and pulley speed reducer, approximately 3 to 1 ratio. Helps but not where I need to be. Lengthened the arm on the clutch motor linkage and getting close. I wondered about an electric speed reducer like you use to plug a router or other power tools into. Anybody ever tried one of these? I built a speed control with a light dimmer switch yesterday. Worked a while but at some point the motor kicked out and I was able to get it going again. Did not expect this to work but wanted to try. Not enough power (600 watts maybe). Would try a router speed control if it would be safer for the motor. I know about servo motors, but really don't need to spend that much right now as I pretty much give all my work away. Thanks.

Moving Industrial machines around the shop and outside

Mount them on a little trailer with a bench seat? -
Vehicles with both metric and SAE fasteners, plus Torx, plus Phillips screws. Have to drag the whole shop under the car to test sizes. As for the T shirt, they usually have the seams closer together in the back of the neck than the front. Thats the only way I can tell without putting it on wrong.

Want Marlin 336CS Lever Wrap Pattern
MarlinDave replied to Reichenbach1976's topic in Patterns and Templates
I figured it would make your lever rust. Here is one that would be easy. Just a strip the length of the lever with holes punched and braided on. Big loop lever, standard lever, pistol vs straight grip would vary in length. https://www.amazon.com/Handcrafted-Leather-Lever-Wrap-Action/dp/B0BWTMX59S/ref=asc_df_B0BWTMX59S&mcid=01ae33d3797c3e7b86ffc385894f0f80?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=79920941687458&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4583520405611133&psc=1 -
Want Marlin 336CS Lever Wrap Pattern
MarlinDave replied to Reichenbach1976's topic in Patterns and Templates
Do you not just take wide lace and wrap it it till you run out of lever? -
Cheap leather which looks fine till you finish the project and dye it and a big spot in the center wont take any dye.

Consew 230R-1 setting it up for leather
MarlinDave replied to lilbax's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
I have my first machine sitting in the back of my shop. It is the same model Lucy Arnaz used in the I Love Lucy episode where she sewed her sleeve into the dress she was making. Bought it for leather. Will sew one thickness, not 2.- 27 replies

Consew 230R-1 setting it up for leather
MarlinDave replied to lilbax's topic in Leather Sewing Machines
Something that may help you out is many industrial sewing machines have a compatible table and motor. You probably can get just another sewing machine (some call it a head) and replace yours on the table and motor you already have. All you do is lift it up, remove the belt, and it pulls off. That could save on both price and shipping for your replacement machine. You may need a speed reducer if it does not have a servo motor for speed control, or replace the motor with a servo motor.- 27 replies
