  1. Been making some handbags and according to my wife a handbag needs a liner....so how do you go about a liner made from fabric!?! My liners I tried are more or less a sack-like inner bag inside the leather shape, which is going to be the handbag..I have seen beautiful doctor bags and also Gladstone bags and it seems the liner is tightly attached to the inner sides/fronts....? But if glued, will glue not show/seep throu fabric...? How can I make a liner fits like a skin or glove to the shape of my bags...? Will try to add picture of latest bag, liner is all baggy and fluffy,!,?!,"+-_ Thanks for ya all's time!!! James .
  2. I have used solvent dye from Fiebings for ever....now I read a lot about oil dye and wonder what it can do better or when to use it...?? I am thinning my regular Fiebings dye and do fairly well, can u thinn down oil dye and what is the better dye to use??!! I do lots of chopper seats, holsters and such...thanks for any help.
  3. Dye or no dye, alcohol or Methyl...(I prefere Tecquila) I just thought the fumes blew me away...then I realized it is the awesome carving and the flow of colors you do!!! Well maybe it is the Tecquila, but I like it!!! Since I use spirit dye I will try both and see what it does....( Then have some Tecquila...haha...) Thanks for great post!! James
  4. Thanks so much, I can wait, again Tnx for your toime and effort!!! James
  5. Just brought my Singer 99K back to live, had it badly out of time and jammed needle in bobbin case....kinda proud of the fact that the repair manual helped me, being a bloddy rookie,,,,,haha.... No since I am getting brave I will tear into my new 15-91 and make it nice....is anybody out there has a copy of a repair manual for a Singer 15-91....I do very light Leather on the 99K, done some work on my Adler too.....trying to learn a bit about sewing machines...thanks for your effort... James
  6. Tnx Art What is a SCR Motor?? They all seem to have 1.5 amp and an additional pulley to reduce speed and add torque...?? Never seen a Singer 111 portable, I just need somethbing I can use, drag arround or not taking up to much space....will I need a walking foot for chap or bag leather...? Where wpould be a good place to buy one?? Again, thanks!! James
  7. I am tired of using my 99K and the 19-31....and yes they where never meant to do leather anyway!! Just ruined my 99K and the 19-31 is not ready yet to do my small leather stuff like 2-3 layers of soft 2- 4 oz chap leather, or a wallet or a small coin purse kind a thing....so my question would be ....is there a good affordable portable walking foot machine that can do this kind of work?? OTHER THAN THESE EXPENSI VE Sailrites?? I have no room fo another sewing head with table ( already got an ADLER 105-64 IN THE SHOP AND WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A PORTABLE FLATBED MACHINE FOR CRAFT SHOWS THAT KANN HANDLE 2-3 LAYERS OF SOFT CHAP OR BAG LEATHER!?! ANY OPINIONS, IDIAS OR COMENTS...!? THANKS SO MUCH!!! JAMES
  8. Hey, no harm done and if u own two of them thingy's that's just fine....my opinion, and that's all that is...is that these "aparatuses"are made simple and very straight forward...need one hand to sew and no motor...?? Well that's OK when u pay little for little...but the price tags these things have can buy a very nice real sewing machine!!! So if u'r happy that's fine, I like to get my money's worth.... So as I said, just my opinion and comon sense. Thanks for your view As an actual owner, We all have the same destination >>> being a good leather worker >>>but the way we get there may be totally different!! So let's get back to the bench and make something pretty....ya all hang in there!!! James
  9. OK, here is my two cents...I am a bloody beginner in sewing machines and had absolutly the same questions....I have now a Singer 99K with 18 needles, it will do nicly some chrom taned chap leather about 2 layers or max three of 2-3 oz....that is pushing it bad....so forget that for holsters....then I bought an Adler 105-64 used in veruy good condition...but not for free...I learned it fast here on this forum)))) nothing is for free...BUT there are good deals somewhere....U need to look and search...I found a guy here locally with very good used deals!! Stay away from this Tippman stuff, a joke for the money....and lots of bad reports about the support....u need to spend about 500 dollar to 1000 to get a used machine from somebody trustworty....like these guys here on the forum selling machines....again I am a bloody rookie but I know exactly what u going throu...U will be upset, unhappy and ill if u not get the right machine for the right job!!! This art guy is cool, Bob Kovar is super ( he helped me big time ) there are good folks on here...I can check my guy what he has, give me a ringer, check craig list....check local upholstery and shoe shops... Greetings from a Rookie James
  10. Thanks so much, lots of info here....I love this forum!! According to the pictures it is a short arm,,,,,I have not seen the machine or the model tag....only a picture of it. Will have to check the condition too. The Lady uses it as decoration piece, haha.... Since I have a Adler 105-64.....don't know if this one will be any help to me!? Again thanks for all the info on here!!! JimBob
  11. My bad, of course it is a model 29....got confused with the Adler 31...oh well, I am learning....I will try to check on these things and also will do some horse trading, hahaha.....maybe I get it for a tad less!!?? What would this machine be good for other than repair boots?? Is there a certain line of work this machine is very good at....how thick will it sew and what leather or material will it take?? Are they very relaiable.....?? Hope u dont mind me asking all these questions... Thanks a lot!! JimBob

    oval conchos...?

Gosh, I love their products....nice selection and some good value on Sterling too...thanks, I am a concho-holic...hahaha...!! Jimbob
  15. Number 18 will fit fine into the hole, 20 may needs to be drilled...Me using 69 thread only, because it fits the bobbin well....u can use 69 on bottom and a 20 needle for 92 on top....but I think it is overkill for this machine!! Greetings James
  16. I guess I forgot to add the "after" pictures...LOL...sorry...here are they...hope you can tell....the new BLACK motor....and the beautiful larger Handwheel...I love this little 99K!!! If you need any help on urs, please call Bob Kovar from Toledo industrial sewing machines...866-3627-397....he was super big help on this matter and he carries the No 18 leather sewing machine needles for just a few bucks!! Very nice guy, check him out!!! Greetings and let me know if I can help... James
  17. Hello Thanks for the info, My motor was very weak to begin with and I opted for a new very strong 1.5 Amp motor from Toledo industrial sewingmachines!! That thing now is eating everything up that u dare to put under the pressure foot!!! This is not a industrial sewingmachione but a hard working jewel in my book...I also changed the handwheel to the bigger spoked one!! Made also a boig difference....and when u need a little help with ur hand then that bigger wheel comes in handy....here are two pictures of the new, old, Singer 99K !!! Greetings James

  24. uote name='cdthayer' date='17 November 2009 - 06:25 AM' timestamp='1258457137' post='131347'] Put a larger handwheel on it. If it's got the basic small disc-type wheel on it that most electric 99s came out with, a larger spoke-type wheel is an easy conversion. The larger wheel will give it a little more momentum, similar to adding a flywheel to a system. Changing wheels is a common conversion, and necessary to create a 99 handcrank using after-market parts that are now available (the handcranks require a spoked wheel for the "finger" to operate the wheel). I know you're not wanting to go handcrank, but the larger wheels have the belt groove like the smaller wheels, and you'll like the larger wheel for those times when you still need to help a little by handTh Best choice is to find an old class 66 machine to get the larger wheel. New spoke-type hand wheels are available (most domestic sewing machine repairmen stock them - $10-15), although I've noticed that some of the guys making them have a little trouble getting the center hole "centered". Most of them work pretty well anyway, but some of them wobble. CD in Oklahoma thayerrags.com Thanks so much, I did not Know u can do that to a little Singer 99, bigger hanswheel makes sense.... Always something to learn!! Again, tnx James
