Cheryl Smeja has a lot of her lessons available as downloads off of her website. Here's a link to the one on the pot class she taught in Sheridan. My wife and I both took the class and it seemed like everyone in it was having a lot of fun. It was pretty interesting to see what happens to leather when you dip it in boiling water. Here's a picture of some of the pots made in the class.

Hi Regis, It would have been great if you could have made the class. I think it went well enough that I may consider teaching again sometime, but Florida???? That'd be quite a drive. Ask again in January when it's 30 below and the snow is 3 feet deep and I might seriously think about it!! Denise, My dog is getting pretty old and he can't handle all that sugar anymore so the doughnuts are safe to eat these days. Well, most of them are. I kind of have a thing for frosting too, but Kathy didn't seem to notice . Can you imagine what the doughnut budget would have to be around here if everyone thought they were safe to eat?????

Here's a few pictures that Stacy took at the class. When we were getting close to finished, people started leaving before I got a chance to get a group photo or pictures of the finished projects. But I did get a few to prove Kate was actually there. Here's one with Kate in it. She's the one in the yellow shirt Kathy, Bert, and Don Kate, Wes, Al, and Dale Kathy aka Yaklady Here's one of Bert and Kathy in his shop at home. While we were there, he showed us how he makes stacked leather pens. He has lots of cool tools, and WAY too much room. It's just not fair!! Again, most everyone had left before I remembered to get my camera, but here is one of Bert, Kathy, Kate and me along with Bert's triplets. And the final one. It looks like Riley is wishing we'd all leave so he could go to bed already.

Pretty much everything I have carved in the last couple years has been on Tandy leather too. It takes a little while to figure out how to make it work, but once you do, it carves just fine for me. For me, the key seems to be to keep it damper than some of the other leathers out there, and I case with just plain water.

Hey you forgot, I brought doughnuts too!!! I've got some pictures that I'll try and get posted one of these days when things slow down a bit. What I couldn't get done if I didn't have to work...... I'm really glad that Bert finally talked me into doing a "real" class. All the people in the class made it a lot of fun. It's hard to believe that people would drive hundreds of miles to take a class from me (Thanks Kathy and Kate!!!!) but I'm sure glad they did. I was dissappointed that several of us didn't get finished with the painting part of the class. That's something I wanted to spend more time on, but we ran out. I got an email from one of the participants in the class today and he said that he had entered his little birdie in the county fair and it took a first place. How cool is that???? And yes Kate, let's do it again!!!! Maybe next time you can be the teacher Oh yeah, don't forget, Kathy is going to be teaching a class in Rapid later this fall. I am sure it's gonna be great too. I plan on being back for it.

Those magazines were all sold, but I will probably have another set available later this fall. Several people have asked about more, so I'll be sure and post them when I have more info.

Hi Gisela, I don't think Hidecrafter carries any of Jan's instructional material. He has several of his patterns available, but most of them that I have are just pencil drawings. Some of them have arrows to show hair direction. I know he has a printed lesson on an Arabian horse, and I think he may have at least one more printed lesson but I am not sure what it is. And as you know, he's done a couple lessons in the Leather Crafters and Saddlers Journal. He has purchased equipment to start making videos, but so far he hasn't been happy with how they have turned out, so I dont think there are any available from him at this time. He has also expressed an interest in writting an instructional book, but I don't know if he has started on that either. I've taken a large amount of photos at all of the classes that I've attended and give copies of them to him after each class. He has said he'd like to use them in the book if he gets a chance to work on it. Jan doesn't have email as far as I know. If you used the contact form on his website, that would go to Bob, the guy that built the site. He will probably pass your message on to Jan, but I dont know how Jan will answer you. If you'd like, I can give you his mailing address and phone number. I'll try and get some pictures of the hair and horns class posted soon. You've done a really nice job on the lynx and the Eichelhaeher and on your eagle. It looks like you learned very well from Robb! I can see why he was proud of you.

Hi Tom, Nobody's jumping in here, so maybe there isn't anyone that has any good tips for carving pine cones??? I've tried them a couple times and they never turn out that good either. You can tell they are supposed to be a pine cone, but they sure aren't anything special. The only instructions I remember seeing for pine cones was in Al Stohlman's book, Inverted Leather Carving, and the instructions in there are for carving them inverted (imagine that!) I tried carving a couple of them this morning using those instructions and the results weren't any better than when I've tried them before (so I am not sure I want to post them here) If anyone has some tips for carving pine cones, or even some examples of ones that they have done, I hope they'll post them. I'd like to see them too.
