Hello, To give you another option- Go to this site for another way to sharpen-http://knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/776367/tp/1/ Jerry Hossom posted that a long time ago and I have recently tried it and it works very well. Good luck. Fred

Hi Luke, I had been wondering about using a Previal Sprayer and thanks for answering one of my questions. The other one being- Do you have to thin the dye before spraying? I have not tried doing it yet, because I have some water based poly in my Previal sprayer jar. I need to buy more jars. Thanks again, Fred

Everybody, Thanks for the replies and especially the photo. Are his mauls are a one piece casting? That is what it looks like in the photo, to me. If I am wrong, please set me straight. Bobby, you have a very nice set of mauls, and they look like you have put them to good use! MadMax22, Where can I get Ed(bearman) maul prices? I have been to the site/gallery and never saw a price list. Thanks again to all. Fred

Can you post a link so that I can see one of his mauls. I tried his site and tried to find him in the member directory as Robert Beard without any luck. How does he post? Thanks, Fred

WW, I use to have cable then went to DD and was pretty happy except for the price and the loss of signal on rainy days. I now have Uverse and am very happy with it. Hopefully it will be offered in your area some day. Fred

Repair 22-watt circline fluorescent magnifying task lamp
Pelallito replied to esantoro's topic in All About Us and Off Topic
Ed, I am glad that the eyebrows grew back. My condolences for the loss of the circline lamps. But their children should serve you ably for years to come. Regards, Fred -
MM, He could try adding a small shim, of some sort, one at a time and see if it changes things. Hopefully someone with the same machine will clear things up. The grinder would work, but it would by my last choice. Good Luck with it. Fred

Amuckart, I don't know anything about that machine. But it is never normal to design a machine or machine cover that rubs that way. Normally there is some clearance. In one of your photos it looked as if the cover was damaged by a blow in the past, but the other photos gave me the impression that it was cast that way on purpose. I presume that you have not been able to find a manual on the net. ( I just reread the post where you mentioned the manual, so apparently you have one.) The two nuts that you mentioned might be thin, half thick nuts. Hopefully some one here has one. Does the manual mention which way to orient the blade? It probably should be in bevel up as you have it. Somehow, I think, you are going to have lower both rollers and blade to get the clearance for the cover. Another possibility occurred to me, could the covers mounting point have been damaged in the past and re welded incorrectly? So that now you have this problem. Good luck with this, it looks like a very nice machine. Regards, Fred

Annie35, The case and carving is very nice. Did you make it from scratch and do you have any photos of the interior? Regards, Fred

Try doing a search for smillingjim. I stumbled across a thread yesterday where it showed a homemade splitter that might do what you need. He used a razor blade, washers, bolts, and wood to make a very nice, small splitter. Good luck. Fred

Chuck, Beautiful sheath. Thanks for posting it and your stitching pony tutorial. I made one following your instructions. I have not been here very long, but everyone has been very helpful! Regards, Fred

ABC3, Thanks for the reply. Leatherimages, Thanks for the good ideas and help. I had not thought of putting the belt that way. I will also try the singed daubers. I will try that on my next belt. Regards, Fred

Hello, I saw a splitter in use, for first time, the other day and realized that I should have one. Does anybody know of any published plans for making one? I did not have the time to even take some photos of the one my friend was using. Thanks for the help. Fred I did do some searches both here and Google before posting. Obviously, without any luck.

Terrahyd, I did do a search for belts before I posted the question and did not find anything that helped. I will try your recommendation and check out the tutorials again.( Thanks again for the help, I did not know about the gallery and what is there!) Today I made an experimental version of the hidepounder pen for coloring the edge and it worked fairly well, but it could not fix the mistakes I made yesterday. I took a piece of stainless tubing and cut it off. I put a delrin plug into it to that I drove in a little bit. Then I had a small piece of felt that I put in the tube. I did not want my felt to disappear from sight. I cleared off more of my workbench so that I could over lap the belt over the edge of my workbench the entire length of the belt. That worked out pretty well. Thanks for the respose and help. Regards, Fred

Hello, I am new to leather work and wondered how the blazes you get a good finish on the belts edge and the belt itself? I started following Hidepounders tutorial and had a great edge on the belt. I started to dye the edges and had second thoughts about the order of operations. I antiqued the belt since I had basketweave it a few days ago. Then I tried to put brown dye on the edge and I did not get a nice straight edge on the belt. When ever I tried to hold it still, it wiggled away from me as if it had its own free will. I got ticked off and decided to attempt finishing it tomorrow. When I started putting the dye I used a Q tip, which went pretty slow. Then I tried using a swab and the dye went everywhere. I ended up cleaning it off. Any and all advice would be happily accepted. Thanks, Regards, Fred

Gary, Looks fine to me. It should serve you well. Regards, Fred

Hi, I agree with Logem that a good stainless would work well, but at the price Admiral wants for 1/16th by 6" , you better have a use for all of the unused material. I bought a piece of 4 by 1/116th by 18" O1 for about $18 and so far have made a head/round knife out of it and will probably make three more knives, ;ike the ones shown in Stohlmans book to have a matching leather knife collection. YYou can get O1 in any company that sells precision tools. Good luck. Regards, Fred

Hello, I just made a head knife out of 1/16 by 4" O1 steel and was going to post it until I read this great thread. The only thing that I would add to the tutorial , is that the oil should be warmed up over 120 degrees. This is supposed to work better. Regards, Fred

Jbrd, Here is another website-http://www.knifenetwork.com/forum/index.php. Like the others, you have to register to post. Good luck. Fred

Todd, You might check your programs and see if you have lost the scanner. Then you could try this- go to My Computer-Control Panel-Scanner and Camera-under Imaging Task there is a Add an Imaging device. On my computer that starts a Wizard to add a scanner or camera. We probably need to move this somewhere else now that we are off subject, but I don't know where. I will try Bobs system today, but I still need to get the dye and make applicator pens. Thanks to everybody again for all of the help. Regards, Fred

Hello, I did a few searches and have not found what I was after, so I am asking for help. I am curious how the bearings look like and what kind they are, that are used in the better swivel knives. Has anybody got a photo of one that is disassembled? I took my original Tandy and took it apart and polished the internal parts of the swivel mechanism and it felt smoother. I would like to add bearings to it or make my own knife. I will probably use aluminum for the barrel. Any and all help would be appreciated. Regards, Fred

Very nice knives. What steel did he make them out of? Thanks, Fred

Todd, Sorry about your scanner problems. Try unplugging from the computer at the back of the scanner and the power to the scanner. Perhaps when you reconnect your computer will find it again. I have had problems with mine and they can be irritating to solve. In my case, it normally involves a few appropriate words about computers and the people that invented them. I looked up the gulf wax on the computer and saw it on line. I called a local Publix yesterday and they said they did not have it, but I think that I have seen canning jars there, after my memory was jogged by these responses. If necessary I will order it on line. When I asked a friend about this, he laughed and told me that I lived in the wrong part of the country for canning. Thanks for the help. Regards, Fred

Hello, I just came across this and enjoyed reading it. Yesterday I came across the paper wheels and will probably order soon. How thick should the blade be for a convex edge? I measured a current head knife and it was 1/16Th thick. So I bought some 1/16 X 4" O1 and I am in the process of sharpening the knife I made with it. I am wondering if I should have gotten something thicker. I hope that this is a good place to post this and that I am not hijacking the thread. I am going to copy that 4 sided strop soon. Thanks for the great information. Regards, Fred
